Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Last January, 2017, I changed the pet insurance for my 1 1/2 year old Lab to Healthy Paws. Approximately 3 months later my lab tore her ACL and required expensive TPLO surgery. Despite HP's great reviews, I was nervous about how well they would cover a new client. I printed out their forms and submitted our claim by mail. Within a few weeks I received a check for 80% of the surgery, x-rays, meds, hospitalization etc. They covered everything! I was very impressed and so happy I switched my pet's insurance to Happy Paws. Unfortunately, last month she tore the ACL on her other leg. This time I downloaded their APP and simply snapped a picture of the vet's statement and clicked... Read More

On Sept 30th my one year old German Shepherd (Chloe) was running through the ranch land and hit a large rock or animal hole. She fractured a hock (Ankle) on her left leg. I took her to my local Vets Office and after X-rays it was determined she needed surgery. The closest Board Certified Surgeon was two hours away. The next day surgery was preformed. I have had other Pet Insurances with prior K-9's. When it came to submitting a claim I got nothing but a run around. (Oh that's not covered etc.) Well all I can say is Healthy Paws Pet Insurance not only made the claims process easy and they did it with great concern for Chloe. No bad attitudes here. I have talked to several... Read More

This insurance has been a godsend. It's better than my own (human) insurance! I did a lot of research before selecting Healthy Paws and believe they're the best in the industry. The annual deductible is low and is better than companies that have separate deductibles for different conditions/problems. The ability to choose between an 80% or 90% co-pay is a flexible feature. Whenever I've had to make a claim (and unfortunately, I've had to make several), the process couldn't have been simpler: using the Healthy Paws app on your phone, take a photo of the vet's invoice and hit the "Submit" button. You get a notification that they're processing the claim right away, and a check within... Read More

We have had our dog, Wynslow, insured with Healthy Paws since he was a puppy. We couldn't be happier and more satisfied with the service we have received from Healthy Paws. Unfortunately Wynslow has had a couple of significant health events that required specialized medical care. Even if we did not have insurance, we would have sought out the best care possible for Wynslow. But having insurance was a source of comfort as we made our decisions on Wynslow's care. The cost of the care was significant but its impact on our family budget was very much muted by the reimbursements from Healthy Paws. Dealing with Healthy Paws couldn't be easier - we submit our bills/receipts to Healthy Paws and... Read More

Our 9 month old Airedale Terrier had to have emergency surgery 9 days ago. We have been dog parents to three Airedales in thirteen years and through experience have learned that really good pet insurance is a must. I had heard of a very positive experience with Healthy Paws from a chiropractor whose own young pup had needed emergency surgery a few months ago and after hearing how happy she was with her own experience, I immediately signed Sherlock up. We are now 10 days out from Sherlock's surgery and I can not say enough about how kind, thoughtful and professional the folks at Healthy Paws have been. We filed our claim the day after surgery and within just a few days Healthy Paws let... Read More

It takes a little while to get your claim processed and get the reimbursement but they always cover what they say they will and actually ask and care about how my dog was doing after her ACL surgery. Love this insurance and so happy I chose them!

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Courtney - We're so glad we could help with your dog's major leg surgery! We apologize for the long claim processing time your experienced. The summer and early fall months tend to be much busier for pet insurance, as more people take time off and get out and about with their pets. There are also many more seasonal conditions that can mean illnesses and injuries. Add to that the high volume of clients who live in the areas affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma that were contacting us regarding their injured pets. Please give your baby a great big hug for us!

Healthy paws make sure to get the bills directly from the vet or hospital, encourages us to stay focussed on our pets, promptly sends cheques, remembers their birthdays and check in on how they're recovering. Genuinely kind and caring, you could not find a better company to insure your pets. Highly recommended.
