Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

After spending well over $10,000 in medical bills on our previous dog, we researched several dog insurance companies before we purchased our new pup. We felt the most comfortable with Healthy Paws and are glad we chose them. Our dog, Denali, sadly, was diagnosed recently with osteosarcoma and we made the difficult decision to have our dog's leg amputated and to start chemotherapy to give him the best chance at survival. These decisions we had to make were tough, on their own, but the entire process was made easier knowing that Healthy Paws was there to provide us with the financial ability to give our Denali the best care possible. As per their website, within 10 business days of my... Read More

I whole heartedly recommend Healthy Paws. Our 14 month old puppy had been in ICU for a full 7 days, having undergone major surgery - Healthy Paws covered 80% of an extremely expensive hospital bill. Receiving our reimbursement helped relieve much anxiety, allowing us to concentrate our attention on caring for our little guy when he finally came home. Also, I was touched that someone personally called, and when they did not reach me, emailed me to inquire on how our puppy was feeling and recuperating Don't know of any company that takes the time to do that. Healthy Paws App for submitting a bill could not be more simple to use - just take a picture of the bill with your phone and... Read More

I absolutely recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. My coonhound is my 5th dog. 1st dog lived a long life, my 2nd and 3rd pups had many health challenges starting from a young age and at the time I didn't know about Pet Insurance. A lot of money was put out for their care over the years - never regretting one penny spent on my pet family - but at times it can make the pocket book a little thin (well, a lot thin). I just had to say goodbye to my 4th dog, who lived a long and full life. After two dogs with a lot of health issues, it was so nice to have one that didn't. Along comes our Coonhound, Dixie. About 5 months old, she got a cherry eye. $1500 later (UGG) we thought...here we go... Read More

I wouldn't have been able to afford the medical care my 5.5 y/o golden retriever needed after suffering two torn cruciate ligaments if I didn't have my Healthy Paws pet insurance. after about $14,000 of surgeries, medicines, radiographs and follow up visits (oh and an emergency hospital visit, after a bad reaction to Fentanyl), I was reimbursed 90% (after my $100 deductible). it was as simple as taking a picture of my receipt and submitting through my cell app. I have recommended Healthy Paws to my friends/family, it has more than paid for itself, but more importantly, it opened up all the options that I would have never been able to entertain. Only the best for my guy and he is recovering... Read More

Healthy Paws is excellent. They were there for me in difficult moments with by Baby Boy Maltese and supported me. Not only with reimbursing for some of the medical expenses but also for following up in my case and asking how my boy was doing. You really don't find that kind of service every day. Thanks so much and I will continue using your services for my 2 pets.

Healthy Paws has been a life saver for my cat Peeta! Peeta had to have emergency surgery, multiple blood transfusions, x-rays, ultrasounds and a feeding tube for a traumatic injury. He fought for his life for a week, but is making a full recovery now because we were able to get him the best health care possible. Healthy Paws was there for us, from the first panicked phone call I made throughout the whole ordeal. My claims were processed quickly and we were all very touched when Peeta received a hand-written get-well card from the entire team. If you love your pet, get Healthy Paws!

I have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for about almost 4 years now and I could not be happier to have them for when I need them for my dog Piper's health care needs. I have had to file claims twice once for a minor ailment and for CCL (ACL) surgery. The latter was a major (and expensive) surgery for Piper. And although I had forgotten to send them her updated medical history (which is subsequently did), they quickly and provisionally approved my claim and the reimbursement was made within 11 business days of making the claim. PROS: The claim process is easy, no forms to fill, easy online upload. Claim response is speedy, Customer Service is excellent (a follow up email to ask how Piper... Read More

Healthy Paws has been so great. My puppy, Luther, got very sick with some intestinal issues and without insurance I would not have been able to afford all of the billings that were racking up. Now Luther will have to continue to be on expensive medicine and Healthy Paws makes this manageable. I have been able to call into Healthy Paws and make sure that procedures are covered and everyone I speak with is so helpful and nice. They even email to check in on Luther. Can't imagine not having Healthy Paws!
