Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

When my husband and I decided to get pet insurance for our then puppy Stanley back in October 2014 we had no idea how grateful we would be to Healthy Paws today. We knew when we got it we would only need to use it in case of an emergency or for the occasional time he got sick. In February 2017 our "emergency" happened. Stanley had to go in for TPLO (ACL) surgery. He was only three years old and my husband and I were devastated that he had hurt himself playing. Having Healthy Paws made a stressful situation less stressful. I did not have to worry about a large surgery, rehabilitation, and perscription bill because we had opted into a plan that would cover 90% of the costs. By the end of... Read More

I have never had pet insurance before and I looked up a comparison chart of companies, read information and chose Healthy Paws. So far I am pleased! My dog Winnie was hospitalized, I kind of "forgot" I had pet insurance but when I remembered, I was so relieved. I could have her get the treatment needed without worrying. I was very impressed that I received unexpectedly, an email from their client services checking to see how Winnie was after her incident. They put a personal touch that means a lot to us as pet parents. There was an an easy to use app you can submit claims, as well as other easy online options or via mail. It was no hassle and very prompt processing of the... Read More

JUST DO IT. THEY'RE AMAZING! Sadly, our dog got a nasty lung cancer tumor. We did surgery and started chemotherapy but unfortunately the tumor had spread and we had to say goodbye to him. Throughout his illness, we submitted probably a dozen bills totalling over $12000 (yes, twelve thousand). Healthy Paws paid every single bill, no questions or pushback. All the claims were approved SAME DAY. The checks came in less than a week. They emailed us support and condolences. I honestly can't see how it could have been better (unless free). I will never have a dog without having Healthy Paws, period.

I have heard stories from other pet owners about the worthlessness of having pet insurance. My friends would ask why I didn't just put that $40-50/month into a savings account accessible immediately if I needed it. If I'd taken that approach I know that I never would have continued to save due to more urgent financial concerns. So when my 11-year old, 20 lb. terrier mix had a cranial cruciate ligament tear I was relieved that I'd kept up my coverage with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Between our regular vet's bill for diagnosis and the surgeon's bill for treatment the total was almost $4000. After my $500 deductible was met Healthy Paws covered 90% of the remaining amount. Since this... Read More

Owning a pet is a huge responsibility, but also a very rewarding one. They are your family and regardless of your mood, they are so happy to see you. So, you want your best friend to have the healthiest food, exercise and a healthy life. I got my beagle Bailey in April 2013. Beagles are hearty and healthy dogs, so I felt I didn’t need to purchase insurance for him. One day he was kind of off, so I took him to my vet. They gave him some meds and I took him home. He was still off, drooling and very stand off-ish. Normally he wants to be by your side, but he was paranoid. So, it was too late to go back to my vet, so I went to urgent care and he ended up spending the night. Well, after that... Read More

I am SO thankful we have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! We went through expensive vet bills with our two previous Bull Terriers and, upon adopting our newest Bully decided to get insurance for her as soon as we brought her home. I read many reviews and Healthy Paws almost seemed too good to be true but I enrolled and, boy, I am SO thankful I did. We rescued this sweet girl from a shelter and HP covered her checkups and meds when she had little ailments but the real test was when she was found to have a heart problem. We thought that was going to be the end of this pup who was given a rotten hand in life - 1st being dumped in the country then this! Healthy Paws came through and... Read More

Healthy Paws has been a pleasure to deal with! My sweet dog just had knee surgery and Healthy Paws reviewed her claim and processed our payment very quickly. They even sent an email after her surgery checking in on her to see how she was doing. Very thoughtful!

I just wanted to publically thank Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for performing above an beyond in processing my claim for our Golden Retriever (Newman). He was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. They processed the claim w/in a 3 business days, and thru direct deposit, I received m reimbursement. Health related issues are bad enough, so the last thing on your mind that you want to deal with is the administrative part. I've been a Healthy Paws policy owner since 2013. I had a few issues along the way...like our dog swollowing an entire baseball hide whole. In each and every claim, Healthy Paws has stepped up to the plate. It is well worth the investment, and I would urge anyone and everyone... Read More

As cat parents, my husband and I learned the hard way how costly excellent cat healthcare can be. Our first fur babies were both rescued as adult cats and did not have insurance. We realized the importance of getting pet insurance too late; thousands of dollars later. When we adopted our triplets from the shelter (we had only planned on getting two, but there they were, three beauties waiting for a home) we learned from our previous experiences and immediately began researching for insurance. We knew that we needed to get insurance while they were still young because some insurance companies place age restrictions and other limiting parameters on purchasing insurance. Healthy Paws...
