Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

our dog recently got surgery bc he had an obstruction from eating his toys. Healthy paws called to see how hippo was doing and also emailed! Hippo is recovering well. The cone came off and the stitches are all melted. He is so much more active and happier now. We are so happy that we had insurance for his surgery. This is exactly why we have insurance. Thank you for such amazing service and care!

I have been with Healthy Paws 2 years and have 2 pets insured with them. I have probably submitted about 10 claims between my 2 dogs. Most were small claims with 1 being a major surgery. In all cases, my claims were resolved and checks received in around 2 weeks. Healthy Paws has been very good to my pet family.

Healthy Paws is, quite simply, the best health insurance provider I've ever had. I include my own human-based insurance provider in this assessment. My dog Franklin had a series of mast cell tumors which had to be removed, and the attendant care required lengthy hospital stays, extensive cancer screening, and consultation with an oncologist to ensure the cancer had not spread. In all, I submitted two dozen requests for reimbursement to Healthy Paws, totaling well over $7,000. Healthy Paws paid every. Single. One. And they did it without complaint, without "Your plan does not cover X" nonsense, at the stated rate of 90%, every single time. The last request I sent using their new... Read More

Healthy Paws has truly been excellent! I've had to use my pet insurance a couple times for various surgeries and illnesses and they have always paid as advertised. We are very fortunate to be covered by Healthy Paws as my dogs will always get the best care needed!

I have been impressed with the ease and promptness of Healthy Paws claims process. Human health insurance should take a page from their book! I am a dog trainer and I recommend them to all of my clients. They also took the time to send a personal email inquiry as king me how my dog was doing following her orthopedic surgery.

We love Healthy Paws for our French Bulldogs! It makes it so easy when you are in a stressful situation with your fur-baby to just make the decision that is medically best without thinking about the cost. For the past two months we have been to our vet and the emergency vet hospital about 5 or 6 times. We noticed that our Frenchie Riblet had lost vision his right eye. He had caught bronchitis and we thought it was jut the meds, but after he was off the meds his vision didn't' improve. Many appointments, exams, an MRI and Spinal Tap reviled that he had encephalitis. We have been trying to treat it with prednizone, but will be needing to move to a stronger chemo drug to treat this... Read More

I am so impressed by Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. This has been a seamless process and has provided me with such an incredible amount of peace of mind. It's stressful enough when your furry child has to undergo major surgery and recovery. This being so easy has been wonderful. I was able to submit the claim online, and received immediate confirmation that it had been successfully submitted. About a week later, I received a call form a Healthy Paws representative to first, check on the pup, and also to let me know the claim had been approved and a check would be on the way promptly. The entire claim was processed and I received the reimbursement check within their promised 7-10 day period... Read More

I would like to thank Healthy Paws so much for their PERSONAL touch. Not only were they willing to work with me and California Veterinary Specialist on payment arrangements, but my wonderful Healthy Paws representative, Nicky called me to ask how my furbaby was doing. Now who would have ever thought you'd have that through an insurance co. It made me realize that these are just not employees working for the company, but they are employees who understand how hard it is to go through anything with your loved pet. They had commitment, professionalism, but most of all, they had HEART! Kai was in the hospital for many days and had to go through radiation treatments and anesthesia but after all... Read More

We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance on our two dogs, Luke and Levi for approximately 3 1/2 years and 3 years . Levi has been insured since he was maybe 6 months old. I searched around different companies and felt Healthy Paws to be the best. Recently our Golden, Levi, decided to chew on something and as a result punctured his lower intestine. He required immediate surgery or we would have lost him. If not for Healthy Paws we very possibly may have been paying for several years. Because of the ofour claim being processed we were able to pay the bills and get Levi back home. Healthy Paws has continued to show concern and check upon Levi well after the claim was paid. We appreciate... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance may be the only insurance company that I've encountered where the people on the other side of the insurance claim actually care. Recently I had to file a very large claim after our dog had severe intestinal issues. My dog had exploratory surgery during a five-day hospital stay, and when we brought our dog home, the vet only gave him a 50/50 chance. As soon as I knew our dog would live, I filed the claim. I was very relieved at how simple it was to file the claim and pleasantly surprised that Healthy Paws contacted me on two different occasions just to check on how our dog was doing. Healthy Paws doesn't cover all the routine maintenance bills for vaccinations,... Read More
