Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is an absolute lifesaver. Thankfully I acquired health insurance for my now three year old Boston Terrier, George, when he was 10 weeks old because we've had some health problems since that would have imposed devastating financial demands in the absence of their Healthy Paws' coverage. They don't hide their annual deductible, and it's incredibly reasonable. All I have to do is take a photograph of the receipt through their app and submit it as a claim, and reliably they return a check within a few days to reimburse me for 80% of the coverage. I could not be happier with this company, and often brag about the fact that my dog has far better health insurance than I do.

We purchased our first pet insurance for our third Corgi, not because we had particular problems before but it just seemed like it could be handy. Before he was even 3 months old we were faced with an ingested toy that needed to be gastrically removed. Healthy Paws to the rescue! Within our first year of puppyhood, our poor guy also had a hernia surgery and a second "foreign body" removal while he was with our pet sitter. Holy heck we've been glad to have Healthy Paws. They are quick to process claims for reimbursement and I love that you can upload invoices and check on claims directly via their app. The only reason I'm not giving them a full 5 stars is that we did have a direct... Healthy Paws is very reliable. The claims are very easy to send in if you download their app. ( that's the only way I did). The premium is reasonable as well, although I really wish they offer a plan where the office visit itself would be covered as well.

This is the best pet insurance ever!!! They have a very simple online process to submit a claim, pay on time and pay what their policy says they will pay. Our 3 year old puppy needed knee surgery, it was a real comfort knowing we were covered and could get her the care she needed. Worth every penny. I recommend this to all my friends and family.

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Gloria - We’re never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Unfortunately, we could not cover your pet’s illness since the signs/symptoms of your pet’s current condition were first noted by your veterinarian in your policy’s fifteen day waiting period. The majority of pet insurance companies have some sort of waiting period before coverage actually begins. Healthy Paws is very transparent about our waiting period on our website, in the policy documents that are in each client’s online account and during the enrollment process. We’re sorry your baby was ill and hope he is doing better.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been wonderful. My 17.8 year old Bichon Frise needed spine surgery in May 2017. Healthy Paws they didn't hesitate in providing coverage. Not only did they reimburse me promptly, but their customer service is wonderful -- kind and courteous. They even followed up with me to see how Cody was doing. Their coverage is very generous. I recommend them to every pet owner I talk to. If and when we decide to adopt another dog in the future, I won't hesitate to use Healthy Paws again. Honestly, I haven't experienced one "con" with this company. I would sign up on day one.

My dog Lovey was bitten by a loose dog last January and we couldn't locate the owner. We have no insurance then and it costed us almost two thousand dollars. My vet recommended us a list of insurance companies and we picked Healthy Paws and insured Lovey since March. Last month, I noticed Lovey was favoring her right leg. Took Lovey to her regular vet and then was referred to see a bone and joint specialist. She was diagnosed with medial patellar luxation with associated excessive distal femoral - layman term dislocated knee cap and misaligned femur! Poor baby so unlucky! She needed major surgery to correct the problems. We are so lucky to have Healthy Paws as our insurance carrier,... Read More

Simply the best! They've paid both minor claims (oral antibiotics) & major claims (knee surgery) incredibly quickly. I've found submitting the claims takes only a few minutes and they always send a follow-up e-mail to see how my dog is doing. Having encountered the high cost of cancer treatment for several other pets, I decided to look into health insurance for Winnie when I adopted her at one year of age. It's now almost 4 years later and her premium has only minimally increased. With the cost of veterinary procedures climbing (her knee PTLO and associated charges ran close to $6K), I'm incredibly glad to have purchased a Healthy Paws policy for her. My only regret is that they... Read More

Caring and amazing service. I did a lot of research before purchasing pet insurance and am so happy that I found this amazing company. My puppy had to have surgery and this company not only reimbursed me 90% of what I had to pay, but they also contacted the vet to get the required documents to process my claim AND emailed me asking how my puppy was doing. Such terrific customer service, I even received my reimbursement check in less than a week!

A 5-star rating is not high enough for Healthy Paws. They have been incredible. When my extremely healthy Shiba Inu got a life threatening infection (pleural effusion) from a foxtail he had to have major surgery to save his life. The estimate was $10,500. We went ahead with the surgery. When we picked him up 7 days later, I opened the Healthy Paws App, took a photo of the invoice, and hit Submit Claim. I received a confirmation shortly thereafter that a check was being sent. I also received a personal phone call to see how he was doing. Great customer service. Life is unpredictable. Save yourself a lot of anguish and get insurance for your furry friend.
