Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My German Shepherd, Carly, was diognosed with cancer in March of 2016. Healthy Paws has afforded me access to the most experienced specialists available. It's been a long difficult road. But after 15 months I see glimpses of her former happy go lucky self. I cold never express how grateful I am for the support Healthy Paws has provided.

I have had several different insurance policies for my rescued doggies in the past and was never really satisfied. This is the very first time that I opted to choose Healthy Paws and it's by far the best decision I've ever made. I recently adopted a little 5-lb pup from a kill shelter and shortly thereafter he developed an eye problem that threatened his vision. Urgent surgery was recommended to save what vision he had, and Healthy Paws came to the rescue. After satisfying my deductible, Healthy Paws reimbursed 80% of my costs, and did so in a very efficient, professional and courteous manner. The client reps have been helpful with suggestions, are evidently very knowledgeable about what... Read More

I have been a Healthy Paws customer for 4 years, soon after we got our dog Jefe. Submitting claims to Healthy Paws is a breeze, it's so convenient to submit via the mobile app. And I usually hear back within a couple days. Just recently Jefe had a serious abdominal surgery and it was reassuring to know that all of his medical expenses would be covered. In the end, we only owed a fraction of the total cost thanks to our policy with Healthy Paws.

Hi, I would just like to say that you are a great company. Your customer service is exceptional. Everyone is so friendly and cooperative, and your website is awesome. Claims are so easy to file, and reimbursement is very quick. I'm so glad that I changed my insurance provider once I read the shining reviews for Healthy Paws. Keep up the good work. Thank you so much for asking how Layla is feeling. It has been a week since her surgery and every day I see her getting a bit better. Next Thursday she has an appointment with Dr. Schwab to check on her and get her staples out. I think after the staples come out we start a program to get her physically active again. Layla is a great companion and we love her so much and feel so fortunate that we can give her the best of care there is to offer. Healthy Paws helped to make this possible. You know we submitted Layla's paperwork to Healthy Paws on a Saturday evening at around 9 PM. We received the approval for coverage payment from Healthy Paws Sunday, the next... Read More

I ensured my pit bull, Aso, with Healthy Paws in November 2016. He ended up tearing both ACL's and needed surgery. We struggled to find a way to pay for his surgery but we were finally able to get two credit cards approved for his Bilateral TPLO surgery on May 17, 2017. I filed a claim soon after, and as soon as they received all the medical records and surgery records, they sent out checks for the surgery and the medication he needed!! They covered 80% of the cost and it was quick and easy to file the claim. Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance company out there as far as I'm concerned. They also emailed me to check on Aso to see how he was doing. They genuinely care about our furry... Read More

Thanks to Healthy Paws, my furry soulmate was able to get surgery last month that saved his vision. I didn't have to consider for one second how I would pay back the nearly $3500 I had to put on my credit card for surgery, recovery, post op visits and hundreds of dollars in medications due to his retinal detachment. I've already received reimbursement but more, a wonderful email inquiring about my beloved Maxwell's status. The fear of watching them take my baby into surgery still brings tears to my eyes but money never had to weigh into my decision on giving him the best care recommended. I love Healthy Paws and consider it one of my wisest decisions to insure my three fur babies. When the... Read More

We're so happy that we got Healthy Paws insurance about 8 months ago when we added a new member to our family, a whippet named Kiara. We didn't want money to influence our decision in case something happened to her. A completely healthy and happy puppy suddenly got sick when she turned 10.5 months old. We went to emergency veterinary care immediately . She was diagnosed with pyometra ( a life threatening infection of the uterus which usually happens in an older dogs). She had emergency surgery and was discharged from the hospital 2 days later with a bill of almost 3,000 dollars. We submitted the invoice to Healthy Paws right away, got an email the next day that our claim was being... Read More

I only can say good things about them. My little boy got a nasty cancer that we tried to fight for months. It involved a big time surgery (almost $5.000) and then a good number of chemo sessions, visits to the hospital, etc, etc. He got better but unfortunately, the f.... cancer came back and took him. During this entire process, Healthy Paws was just AMAZING. By this I mean, they did their part of the deal...which is a lot more than you can say about any other insurance. They paid their % of the bills no questions asked, no matter how big the claims were...and believe me...some of them were damn big. Not only that, but when the damn cancer took my boy away, i did not have to bother... Read More
