Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I enrolled my Dog Mimbo about a year ago with Healthy Paws. I have to say that the experience I have had so far has been amazing. Mimbo underwent a surgery on his knee (ACL). Healthy paws quickly took care of the medical bills (surgery, visit to the doctor and medicines). I had to pay only 80% of the whole deal. The claim process was super easy to do (thru the app), and they kept you informed and posted of the status of the claim. I never had to called to argue a claim (something that I had done with other insurances). Bottom line, the process was easy! Letting me concentrate on mimbo rather on a way to pay the bills…

Healthy Paws is a wonderful insurance company. They process claims quickly and are very helpful. Our pet was poisoned by a bufo toad and Healthy Paws saved the day. I did not worry about the emergency because I knew I had insurance. I highly recommend them!

From the day I signed up until now they have been absolutely wonderful in every aspect of their company. Each customer service representative I have encountered has been helpful, knowledgeable and extremely polite. I chose Healthy Paws based on all the previous reviews I had seen, the affordable price, and the outstanding service they provide. My poor girl was diagnosed with Ideopathic Epilepsy last September and I was such a mess worrying about her and how I would afford her treatment (as most of you pet parents know). I was so thankful that I had Healthy Paws to help me along the way. They made things easy for me and talked me through the process wherever I had questions regarding what... Read More

Healthy Paws pet insurance is the 3rd insurance company we have had and is by far the best. Very prompt response to claims and inquiries, but the ease of submitting claims is the easiest we've experienced. Open the Healthy Paws App, attach a photo of the Vet invoice, push submit ... Done! Our vet staff were amazed at the simple claim procedure. Thank you Healthy Paws for providing great service.

I have had no problems with them. The app makes it super easy to file claims and I always get the reimbursement with a week! I had a stray kitten adopt my family so we got a physical for him and insurance just in case. The poor little guy is less than a year old and has been having chronic urinary tract inflammation and infections. There is no way we would have been able to pay for his treatment without them! I am so grateful and can not recommend them enough.

I have had Healthy Paws for my accident prone cat, Reba, for almost 3 years. Reba has not had the best of luck in terms of this health! When he was a teenage cat, Reba had a deep leg laceration that needed surgical repair- twice! A little over a month ago, Reba needed surgery on his left hip to help him with chronic pain due to a previously undiagnosed fracture that healed improperly on its own. I have to say that Healthy Paws has been great! When I use the Healthy Paws app to submit a claim for veterinary care, a reimbursement check is on its way almost immediately, followed by an email enquiring about Reba's health. In fact, my experience has been so positive, that when I adopted a... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for over 2 years and my puppy has had several serious medical problems. I purchased this insurance when he was healthy and had no idea he would have multiple health issues over a year later. Their web site is easy to use and they respond to email quickly. They also were easy to get a hold of by phone. I have received prompt payments that are both small (medications) and large (MRI with anesthesia) after submitting a receipt and the doctor progress note. I am a physician so I know a lot about insurance and I wish it was as easy as it has been for my dog's illness for me to file and get reimbursement. I do encourage you to understand the coverage... We purchased Healthy Paws insurance coverage for our Jack Russell Terrier several years ago and have, unfortunately (but, thankfully!) had to use it twice. We could not have been more pleased with their promptness in processing our claims AND their superior service. They followed up after the claims were paid to check on our girl's recovery. Would highly recommend this organization to any pet lover/owner. Sharon B.

I recently wrote to Healthy Paws regarding my 5 month old Yorkie, Roxy. I fed her 4 raisins only to find out afterwards that they could kill her. I rushed her to the emergency clinic where her bill came out to about $1100. I submitted her claim to Healthy Paws and am getting back $872.00. They are awesome! "I just want to thank you for being such a great insurance company. I wish I knew about you when I had my first Yorkie, Chloe. I had to put her to sleep in January and her insurance company, ASPCA, reimbursed me $325.00 out of a $3200.00 bill. They didn't pay for trying to keep her alive but they paid for her euthanasia. I'm so happy I found you for my new Yorkie, Roxy. Thank you from... Read More

I have been wholeheartedly impressed with both the customer service and insurance coverage I've received as a Healthy Paws pet parent. We adopted an 8-week old puppy and signed him up for insurance with Healthy Paws the day we brought him home, and what good fortune it was that we did. Three weeks after we brought Wilbur home, he came down with kennel cough, which rapidly progressed to pneumonia. Our poor little guy was transferred from our regular vet's office to a 24-hour emergency clinic, where he spent two full days on oxygen and IV antibiotics before he was discharged to come home. The original estimate from the clinic had us looking at a $7000+ bill. Fortunately, our pup's recovery... Read More
