Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I usually don't bother with giving ratings/reviews but Healthy Paws deserves a 5 star rating. We have a policy that has a $100 yearly deductible with 90% coverage. Our 5 yr old Bernese Mountain dog, Cadette, was diagnosed with bone cancer on April 11th 2017. We took her to an emergency vet hospital with an Oncologist on April 18th 2017, they recommended that Cadette have her hind leg amputated, so they kept Cadette overnight and performed the surgery on April 19th and kept her until April 21st 2017. I submitted the receipts, thru the Healthy Paws app, on April 25th and received the reimbursement check for 90% of the vet bill on May 1st 2017. The app makes submitting vet bills so easy, all... Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is AWESOME!!! I have never had pet insurance before, and thankfully I signed my Border Collie "Rayna" up as a puppy. I chose the $250 deductible and 90% claim payment. Rayna tore her cruciate at 10 months old and had TPLO surgery on 12/30/16. Sadly, Rayna was one of the very few dogs where TPLO just did not work, and last week the surgeon took out the plate, scoped her joint, and did the traditional repair. Healthy Paws has *promptly* paid every claim. The claim process is SO easy, you take a picture of your vet bill, then from the Healthy Paws app on my phone I hit "new claim", "attach picture" and "submit claim." A week or two later a check arrives in my... Read More

I'd like to thank Healthy Paws for the quick turnaround, having the pet insurance was a lifesaver for us and our not so little guy.

We just had to use our insurance for the first time. Our labradoodle, Lucy, had gastrointestinal distress. She ate something ( who knows what?!) but after an emergency room visit and an overnight stay, she appears back to normal. It's such a relief to not have to let financial considerations determine your pet's healthcare! Healthy Paws is the best!

I have been very satisfied with Healthy Paws. Our 1.5 year old Siberian husky has been in all sorts of trouble since we got her and thanks to Healthy Paws we have received substantial reimbursements on her vet and emergency care bills. Without Healthy Paws I cannot imagine how much we would have spent. Between her eating an entire toy and having to get her stomach pumped to getting a parasite in the woods and having to be hooked up to an IV overnight Healthy Paws has helped us immensely. I give it 5 stars (the equivalent to four paws up_). The only downside is that pre-existing conditions are exempt. I understand why they do this but getting X-rays to make sure that she didn't have any hip... Read More

I love Healthy Paws! My Golden Retriever puppy, Hudson, is almost 8 months old and has gone through it all in the past couple weeks. Before I got my puppy, I was thinking I would get it when he was closer to 4 years old since Golden's have a lot of issues as they get older and the Golden I got was VERY well bred so I figured since he had good genes/DNA, that I wouldn't have many issues with him... but boy am I glad that I got Healthy Paws when he was a puppy. If I had waited, then I would have a lot less money in my bank account right now, because you never know what is going to happen with your pup. The first two claims I submitted to Healthy Paws I had back within 2-12 hours. With... Read More

Hobbes's surgery went well and he is progressing nicely. He is a healthy, active sweetheart of a pup who is missing chasing the birds and squirrels out of his fenced kingdom (backyard) 😊, but he is being a good boy and a real trooper with the cone and confinement to his xpen. I can't thank you or the whole Healthy Paws team enough for answering all my questions with my numerous phone calls...thank you, Amanda! Especially thanks for covering the surgery expenses. Quite frankly, it would have been a financial hardship for me to come up with the money to pay for his surgery. I'm not sure he would have had the surgery otherwise if Healthy Paws didn't cover his expenses. Thank you for... Read More

When my wife and I got our dog Tyson she asked me about getting pet health insurance, I initially thought the idea of this was a bit silly never having made such decisions before. But I was ok with it, sure why not? She did some research and decided on a company called Healthy Paws because of their reviews and the fact that they don't have injury limits as many others do. We picked our deductible and the percentage we wanted reimbursed and signed up, easy and done. The app is easy to use, which is how you file a claim, simply use the app to take a photo of the invoice you have from your vet and submit. Within a week you'll receive a response and reimbursement if your deductible has been... Read More

Healthy Paws has delivered as promised from the first day of coverage. They are there for the little issues, and provide the same coverage without hesitation for large issues, like surgery. We've been Healthy Paws customers for over 4 years and will continue to recommend them to any pet lover. We recently had to have a major, unexpected surgery on our dog, and Healthy Paws covered it to the fullest allowable, and even followed up with a warm email to check on her, separate from the emails regarding the insurance claim. Nice touches like that keep customers happy, especially during a time of recovery - aka getting a 24/7 death stare from your pet because they hate life in the dreaded cone!

We were very pleased with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance on our recent claim with them. In February adopted two female pups, mixed breed sisters, at 3 months old and with high medical costs from previous dogs we owned, we decided to get insurance for them. The claim we had came about a month and a half after getting the insurance policy when one of the sisters tore up a corner of her kennel pad and ate a piece of foam and it lodged in the bottom end of her stomach. Since it was to large to pass thru into the intestines it caused a dire situation which required surgery to remove the foam. After two days at the hospital we got Darby back home. I compiled the required forms that is requested per... Read More
