Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I recently started using Healthy Paws and shortly after getting the policy, our dog needed a major surgery. I was so happy with the process for filing a claim and the speed at which everything was taken care of. No questions asked - I just submitted the documents online and within a few days I had an email back with details and the answer that the surgery and all the follow-up appointments were covered. I had the check in the mail within another week or so. And I even got a follow-up email from them asking me how our dog was doing! Overall, super impressed by how quick and easy everything was and how great their customer service team is.

As a responsible pet parent, I cannot say how grateful and happy that I had Healthypaws insurance for my fur baby. My dog who is a 6 yo boxer/mastiff, was regurgitating non stop the Sunday before Easter. We ended up taking him to Animal Critical care that evening, where he had to be rehydrated and X-rays showed what they thought was a blockage in the outflow duct of his stomach. Thinking was he had swallowed something. The next day he ended up having emergency surgery where it was found he had not eaten something but his GI tract had thickened and was inflamed. At this point we had a gravely I'll little big boy. The next week was agonizing for us. We had just spent 4000.00 and still the... Read More

My cat Queen went through Fatty Liver Disease at only 3 years old. In order to get to that diagnoses she was at the emergency vet for almost a week, had a feeding tube inserted, two plasma transfusions, ultrasounds & x-rays and was on multiple medications. Racking up vet bills totaling almost $8,000. Healthy Paws worked with my vet directly to pay her bills upfront as the cost as so great. They even emailed me personally to check on her. Overall amazing and seamless service during a tough time. I would recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance 100%!

Healthy Paws provides an amazing service for pet owners. With 3 tiers of coverage to choose from (different coverage percentages and annual deductibles that correspond to different monthly rates), the plans are very flexible. They also cover a wide range of health issues and services - in my review, I found very little fine print about what isn't covered. Having recently used Healthy Paws for expenses related to an accident, I can say first-hand how essential it is for your pet insurance provider to offer low-stress claims processing. Their mobile app makes it ridiculously easy to submit a claim. No need to deal with paper, forms or even discuss the insurance with your vet. Simply scan... Read More

This company is ABSOLUTE garbage! I'm in the insurance business and I know a lot about it but this company has literally denied EVERY claim I've made on my pet! I recommend avoiding them at all cost! Find another company that will actually be there for you during your time of need!

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Leo - We’re never happy when we have to deny claims for a client. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Unfortunately, we could not cover your pet’s illness since the signs/symptoms of your pet’s current condition were first noted during your policy’s fifteen day waiting period. The majority of pet insurance companies have some sort of waiting period before coverage actually begins. Healthy Paws is very transparent about our waiting period on our website, in the policy documents that are in each client’s online account and during the enrollment process. The good news is if this particular condition completely resolves and a new case happens in the future, it would be eligible for coverage.

I am a vet tech and I have two amazing dogs on Healthy Paws. I've done endless thorough research on the specifics of health insurance plans. For me, what was most important was no limit on coverage. I want to know that if my dogs are sick or have an accident, I can make decisions based on the best medical judgement rather than what I can afford. I love these creatures so much that I want to have the option of having $20,000 worth of life saving care. With my 90/10, $250 deductible, that would have me paying $2,250. I just like the feeling of skies the limit for my babies. The monthly cost was also incredibly fair for the service provided. My first dog Bippy has broken the bank with... Read More

My husband and I got a bulldog puppy 18 months ago. I had heard stories about bulldog problems and one of my friends suggested pet insurance. She had a suggested one, but I did my own research and selected Healthy Paws. It was fortuitous because Bow developed many ailments peculiar to bulldogs. I selected Healthy Paws because I had read good reviews. It was also important that they treat breed specific ailments, something many pet insurance companies dont't do. I chose coverage that paid 70% of covered treatments. They do not cover general maintenance like shots, etc. Healthy Paws has exceeded my expectations. Submitting claims is easy using the Healthy Paws app on my phone. I... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws Since 2011 for my Lab Mix. Although we are pretty physically active (lots of hiking and running) and socially active (friends family outing and he's also a registered therapy dog) luckily we haven't had manu injuries or illnesses. I even wondered at times weather i should keep paying for pet insurance, but decided better safe than sorry. I am so glad I did. I recently discovered my pooch had growth on his paw and after a few tests, it was diagnosed as melanoma. He has since had a few more tests and recently got out of a big surgery to remove the growth and one of his toes. As some of you may know, those vet bills can be horrifying. Having healthy paws has been such... Read More

We are very happy with this pet insurance. The claims process is simple and quick, and they cover what they say they will cover. We have had four dogs in our household insured for the last 4-5 yrs and have had numerous claims, the last one being for emergency surgery costing over $2,400 which was covered at 90% after $100 deductible. They have great customer service and I think they really care about our pets. Thank you Healthy Paws!

I absolutely love Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! Our two year old chihuahua Layla was attacked and bit by another dog recently. She suffered deep puncture wounds on her back leg, and my husband and I were devastated and very worried. She needed emergency surgery, a hospital stay for two nights, lab tests, and several vet appointments. The vet bills really added up quickly, but knowing we had insurance for her really put us at ease about the bills and allowed us to focus on her recovery. I submitted the bills easily online with Healthy Paws, and they approved the claims very quickly, and without any questions. Healthy Paws paid over $1,600 of Layla's vet bills (90% of covered charges, minus... Read More
