Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

In our dog's short 8 years to date, she has had 3 leg surgeries, skin infections, urinary tract infections, an Addison's crisis where she was in a specialized hospital for a week to save her life, and now on medication for life. And yet, she is a very strong, sweet dog. Having her insured with Healthy Paws has saved her life and our financial ability to give her the care she needs and deserves. We have an annual deductible and pay for the office visits and regular shots; Healthy Paws pays 80% of the rest - all the tests, x-rays, surgeries, medications, etc. No questions asked. I just send copies of the vet's bills and we get a check back quickly (even before the VISA bill arrived!).... Read More

When we rescued our love-pug Lucy, we NEVER could have guessed what we had in store. Within the first 3 months, we had 4 different VERY expensive trips to the vet. She had consumed gum and chocolate. At an expense of more than $1000.00 a piece, it was financially very stressful. We decided to look into pet insurance and found Healthy Paws!!!! It feels like WE have been rescued!!!! Since joining, Lucy has had various other maladies including a recent bout that led to a long stay in the hospital. Because of Healthy Paws, we were able to save her life. We continue to be AMAZED by the customer service, quick reimbursement checks, and reasonable price. Because of Healthy Paws, Lucy... Read More

Simply the best, because it works! I have an English bulldog and everybody knows how they are prone to get health issues. My sweet puppy had his first eye surgery when he was only 6months. This was before Health Paws (unfortunately, sometimes we wait till something happens to make a move). Now he is 1 and 4 months and another eye surgery, but this time it's different than before. I was a bit unsure if they would say this was a pre-condition, so I called and they said, again, if it's unrelated, we'll cover.! And that's exactly what happened! It took only 1 week after I've done the claim, they responded me with the details of the refund. Now I'm waiting for the check to arrive! Totally... Read More

I have a purebred Newfoundland. The third from a reputable breeder. No problems with the other two in their lifetime. I bought pet insurance this time because my daughter suggested it is a good idea for any new puppy. My puppy was four months old when she started limping. She had elbow dysplasia in both elbows and it required surgery. Not only was everyone at Healthy Paws supportive and sympathetic, but they didn't interrogate me or make it difficult to file for coverage for the surgery. They have been amazing and I cannot say enough about their support. It has proven to be worth every cent for the monthly premiums. It has literally saved me financially with this unexpected problem.

This is coming from someone who never had experience with pet insurance before so this process was new to me. Come on, pet insurance? Really? Growing up, who would've thought pet insurance was a thing. Well, it is a thing and I highly suggest looking into it if you haven't already. I got a 4 year-old pug at the beginning of the year from someone who couldn't care for her anymore. She was not spayed and didn't have any records of shots or anything. I kept asking and the family basically disappeared on us. Well I took it upon myself to make sure she was set. Got a checkup, shots and had her fixed. After a long debate (with myself) I decided to look into pet insurance. Asked around... Read More

The support and service have been excellent! We bought a puppy 6 months ago and decided to keep the insurance the previous owner had set up with Healthy Paws. Little did we know how important that decision was! Our Cavalier King Charles required knee surgery when she was 10 months old. Sending in the claims was very easy for us and the Veterinarians. Our claim was handled quickly and everyone we spoke with was caring and efficient.

I got Healthy Paws pet insurance for my Sphynx kitten, which is the first pet I've owned in my adult life. Soon thereafter, my girlfriend and I moved in together and got two more kittens, a Savannah and an Oriental Short Hair. We got those kittens coverage under Healthy Paws as well. I now refer all of my friends, family, and fellow pet lovers to Healthy Paws and advocate that everyone get pet insurance, which leads to my first point. The first question you might have when considering pet insurance is "do I really need pet insurance?!" It's a very reasonable question, and one you might ask friends and family who are fellow pet owners. Most fellow pet lovers will tell you it's... Read More

What makes this company extraordinary is that its run by people who really love animals. They go above and beyond and I couldn't be happier having this insurance for my rescue dog, William. Unfortunately, William didn't win the genetic lottery and one year after adopting him it became clear he was headed for a total hip replacement for his bad hips. A year after the hip surgery his knee started popping out of place. Yep, he was again headed for surgery to repair his knee. I honestly don't know what I would have done if I didn't have Healthy Paws Insurance to help cover the majority of costs for these two major surgeries. Both were expensive surgeries but Healthy Paws made them... Read More

We have a 11 year old Weimaraner / Lab mix since a new puppy, her name is Millie. My wife and I decided early on to provide health insurance for our new family member. We did extensive research online...listened to the pros and cons of many Pet Insurers. We decided to go with Healthy Paws... and so very glad we did. Thankfully we have only had to deal with minor health issues up till this year. March 2017 Millie was diagnosed with a 3lb growth on her spleen. Thanks to our wonderful Vet Dr. Jen Powers of Bella Vista CA.... Dr. Jen discovered the well hidden (if you can believe it) tumor which was tucked well up into her rib area. It was discovered when she applied Ultra Sound. Dr. Jen said... Read More
