Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My Dachshund is a almost 3yr old on May 28th. I yelped insurance for fur babies and Healthy Paws was rated by far the best. I chose them and have found they are excellent in customer care, no hassle recieving back claims. My Dachshund Dodger just had to have surgery for his back 9days ago. I chose the 80/20 plan when he was a puppy. They have been more than wonderful. Choose Healthy Paws, you won't be disappointed!!! Mary Tiller ❤

Nala has had Healthy Paws coverage since she was a few months old. I wondered for years if I was just throwing my money away but then she turned 5 years old. In two years she's had a tooth extraction, urinary track infection, intestinal bacterial infection, and most recently a seizure episode! I would literally be over 10K in debt right now with vet bills if it wasn't for Healthy Paws. They are an absolutely invaluable resource! While they are the only pet insurance I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with, I can say with confidence that I would hands down recommend them to anyone searching for quality insurance. Filing a claim is easy and reimbursement is quick. They also have the... Read More

I just don't know where to begin. This company is frankly awesome! I began researching pet insurance companies after adopting a lab mix a few years ago. Sadly, she was very ill when I adopted her and wasn't insurable but the interaction that I had with the Healthy Paw people during this time made up my mind that I would insure my next pet. A couple of years ago, I rescued a German Shorthair Pointer and did get her insured with Healthy Paws. You can imagine with active dogs like Pointers, vet visits can be frequent. Each of my interactions with Healthy Paws has been extremely positive. First, when you call, a HUMAN answers the phone! Issues are resolved immediately! Submitting a... Read More

We have 2 dogs that we love more than anything. When they needed emergency medical care (at the same time), the vet described the course of treatment and said "cost may become an issue." At such a stressful time, it was so comforting to know that they were covered by Healthy Paws. Knowing the emergency care would not be cost prohibitive, we could focus on getting our girls healthy. When all was said and done, we submitted their claims to Healthy Paws. I must admit that I was prepared to have to "argue" about certain parts of the bill, but on the contrary, we were reimbursed exactly as expected and described in their policy terms. They processed the claims within 5 days and we are... Read More

Healthy Paws was a life saver when our 1.5 year old chocolate lab had an accident which caused him to tear his ACL in his left leg. The sugery to repair it cost $2400, with this insurance we only ended up pay around $750. A little over 6 months late his right ACL needed to be repaired as well, because we had already might our deductible from the first surgery, this surgery only ended up costing us about $300! What could have ended up costing us close to $5000 only ended up costing a little over $1000! If we did not have this insurance we would not have been able to afford and give our dog the proper medical assistance he so deperately needed and deserves! Thank you Healthy Paws!... Read More

We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for a few years now and love it. I did A LOT of research on insurance and really narrowed it down based on customer service. Every instance I have actually speaking to a customer service representative is a pleasure. Not once have I ever gotten an attitude but more of an understanding of the emotional situation that we were going through. I am very happy that we went with Healthy Paws and have suggested it to many of my friends and family members. It has saved us a lot over the years and with the plan we chose it is barely noticeable and definitely worth it for our 2 dogs.

When I first obtained Healthy Paws pet insurance I did not think I would use it, and if I did, I envisioned it would be difficult, time consuming and that I likely would not get much coverage. When my dog had to go through surgery and multiple tests prior and post, I found healthy paws was nothing short of stellar. They were always extremely helpful on the phone, filing claims was very simple and easy and they contacted me quickly if they did need any other information. Additionally, they came through quickly with the claim and paid 80% of the costs which was significant. I am so glad I use them and will continue using them throughout the lifetime of my dog.

We have a very unlucky dog. In the 6 years of her life, she has recovered from eating a death-cap mushroom, mange, eye infections, paw cysts, just to name a few struggles. Luckily for us, our vet recommended Healthy Paws insurance on our first puppy visit. Healthy Paws' has always supported our claims without any hassles. Their claim process has been easy to initiate, and they are quick to process claims. I highly recommend Heathy Paws -- our new puppy is also insured!

Healthy Paws is outstanding in all aspects. Variable deductible and coinsurance to meet your budget. Just about everything that was not preexisting is covered. Great app with simple claims processing. Customer service really is terrific. I recently had an issue/question about how a claim had been paid out. I had a response to my email in less than an hour. My claim had been reviewed resulting in an appeal in my favor and a check was on the way. Wish I got customer service even close to that good from my own health care company.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is absolutely amazing. It is so easy to submit a claim by just snapping a picture on the app (takes me 10 seconds, I do it before I leave the Vet!) Recently, my pup had an emergency, and it was of course quite expensive. Thank goodness she is okay, and thank goodness I had insurance. They let me know my claim was approved within 72 hours, and I received my check one week later, before I even had to pay off my credit card. Even more impressive, I got an email from Healthy Paws checking on my pup after her stomach issues. I cannot recommend Healthy Paws enough.
