Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My GSP ended up getting sick, which turned out to be a fungal infection. Many expensive tests later we have these results. We are still waiting on a treatment plan and Healthy Paws has been right there with us. Pets are family and you only want to provide them with the best medical care. With Healthy Paws I can do that. When you get pet insurance you pray that you will never have to use it. But I can't tell you how thankful I am for Healthy Paws. It makes a very stressful situation a little less stressful.

Wonderful company. I received an email on my claim the next day and a reimbursement check for my pets surgery within just a few days. All I can say is they're awsome.

This is the worst pet insurance experience I have ever had. I have owned 4 dogs, 3 of them have been insured (2 through a different insurance plan). With my current dog I decided to try a different insurance plan, and while they offer a great return on your claim good luck getting one approved - I never had a claim approved by them. Healthy Paws insisted that symptoms my dog had previous to her being insured, constituted a pre-existing condition in direct opposition of my Veterinarian who vigorously disagreed that her symptoms had NO diagnoses until after she was insured with them. He stated such in the 2 letters he wrote to them supporting the claim. My Veterinerian called... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Francine - We are never happy when we have to deny a claim for one of our clients . All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Since the signs and symptoms of your pet’s condition were present prior to enrollment, we were unable to provide coverage. Per your request, we had your denied claim go through our 3rd Party Appeal process. Your pet’s medical records, claim documents & your doctor's letters were provided to and reviewed by a Third Party Veterinarian. The veterinarian is not on our payroll, they are not Healthy Paws employees and we only pay them to review the documentation since it is outside of their regular practice duties. As outlined in our policy, the Third Party Veterinarian determination is final and binding on all parties. In this instance, the Third Party Veterinarian concurred with our determination to deny the claim (their findings of the determination were emailed to you) and unfortunately, the appeal was denied. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

I have been using Healthy Paws Pet Insurance every since I got my Welsh Corgi as a puppy 4 years ago. We have been very satisfied with their prompt payments of covered benefits and ease of filing claims. Two weeks ago my Corgi had to have Cranial cruciate ligament repair surgery and as always Healthy Paws came through for us with promptness and caring. It gave us peace of mind that we could give our beloved pet a chance to return to health and happiness. I would highly recommend this company.

My wife and I are so thankful for Healthy Paws. A couple months ago I randomly asked my vet about pet insurance to see if it was even a legit business. I was told that it all depends on the company, but that a few actually paid out on claims. I asked for their best recommendation . . . Healthy Paws. Cut to . . . my lovable genius of a Chihuahua jumps/falls off the top of the sofa when a delivery guy rang the doorbell. We were afraid that she tweaked something. Turns out she fractured her femur in 2 places. (Our dogs are no longer allowed on the sofa.) Two weeks and a day from the incident, we received a check for over $5000 for 80% of the cost of vet bills (2 metal plates, pins,... Read More

Healthy Paws has been fantastic! My New Years resolution was to sign my 2 1/2 year old dog Clyde up for pet insurance. After researching all the options, Healthy Paws definitely stood out as the best! The plans are flexible and absolutely the most reasonably priced. Unfortunately, Clyde injured his leg recently and filing his first claim was super simple! They have a phone app where you can easily upload your receipts and the respond is so quick! Clyde sadly needed surgery but it was a huge relief to know he had insurance. The reimbursement check arrived the mail within a week of his surgery! Best insurance out there by far!

I adopted a miniature poodle mix and had purchased Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. That was in 2015. March 2017 she ended up in Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin and her bill for the first week was well over $23,000. I was waiting for bad news. I thought for sure I hadn't had the insurance long enough to cover over a 23,000 dollar bill. I spoke with Healthy Paws Customer Service and they were amazing. I wanted to find out if I could have the hospital process one week of care so I can get reimbursed to free up cards for her second week of recovery from a major surgery. The representative (Shelly) was so cooperative and said not only can they do that but they can work with the... Read More

Healthy Paws was there when we needed it! Our yellow lab Sara ruptured her right cranial cruciate ligament (ACL in humans), and required surgery. The surgery required was an Arthroscopic assisted Arthrex TightRope repair. Without question, it would have been extremely difficult for us to afford the surgery had it not been for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!!! Healthy Paws stepped right up with no questions asked and Sara is now recovering looking forward to a summer filled with fun with the family! Buying pet insurance through Healthy Paws was a very smart decision. People buy health insurance, fire insurance, auto insurance, yet often don't buy pet insurance and then wish they had!

Over the last couple of days the Howard Family almost lost our dog. Our dog was hit by a car. Our dog just turn 2. We where informed by our Veterinarian to purchase dog insurance when we got her as a puppy. I did my research and located Healthy Paws Pet insurance. Without this insurance, I would not be able to snuggle with my puppy today. Who is making a wonderful recovery from this traumatic event. During this time of crisis I was able to make quick decisions and not have to think about the financial aspect of what was going on as I knew our dog was covered at 90% . I was able to proceed without stress and make the decisions that ultimately saved our puppy's life. I will be... Read More

We love our Healthy Paws insurance. We have had a lot of bills related to pain management and imaging services lately that we could NEVER have afforded without it. Our puppy is now on a course of treatment to alleviate all of his severe suffering and should be a happy dog again soon. You have customers for life, and we tell everyone how important our pet insurance has been in these difficult past few months, and that it's one of the best investments we've every made (better ROI than my 401k!). You've definitely saved our young puppy a lot of pain and possibly even his life. We are very thankful for our Healthy Paws insurance.
