Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Hi Tim, Than you so much for your interest in Willow's recovery. It was a very unexpected and frightening experience for our family, and of course for our beautiful little girl. I am happy to say that she has made a full recovery and I was able to give her her first bath today with the doctor's permission. She received wonderful care and attention at Garden State Veterinary Hospital, with such a wonderful staff. She still has some restrictions and has to refrain from playful activities for a while longer, but her spirits and adorably funny expressions are back! Most importantly I would like to acknowledge the level of excellence from HEALTHY PAWS in processing my claims for this... Read More

i've had dogs for more than 30 years, always labs. never did i have health insurance for them. this time around, i got hooked on a french bulldog, not doing any research about their health. in other words, i didnt realize until i said "yes" that they often have issues with allergies. i investigated insurance, picked healthy paws and dont you know, 3 years later, allergies seem to be an issue. the reason i am giving 5 stars is because that is the most i can give. there hasnt been one person i spoke to you, who wasn't kind, compassionate, reassuring and explained every question i asked. how can it be that every single person is so nice?? but it's true. if there were 10 stars, i would have... Who ever thinks they need pet insurance? Well if you have a pet anything can happen so you need to be protected with the best pet insurance out there. Healthy Paws has been amazing. Customer Service is beyond helpful, claims are processed fast and painless. Just submit your invoices online! It can't get any easier than that. They truly care about your pet. I feel so lucky that we found Healthy Paws for our dog. I cannot recommend them enough. I truly think they deserve 10 stars.

I used to have another pet insurance with another company and Healthy Paws is definitely much better. It is affordable. I love the unlimited lifetime coverage. A 90% deductible is the highest deductible I have seen compare to other pet insurance. Submitting claims is super easy and I get my reimbursement check(s) right away. Although I wish they would cover preventative services as well (i.e. vaccinations, etc.) I still highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance to anyone looking for insurance for their furbabies.

Tucker Boy came to live with our family in April 2016. He is a miniature Australian Shepherd. We signed him up for insurance with Healthy Paws in May 2016. In June he ate a piece of a Sago Palm seed and we rushed him up to the vet and they had to pump his stomach and treat him for poisoning. I will never forget when we got home I called Healthy Paws customer service to see if this was something that they would cover? And the kind lady on the phone told me "That is exactly what we are here for" I just felt the worry and weight lifted from my shoulders. In July Tucker Boy started to have seizures almost weekly so we had the MDR1 gene mutation test done on him and yes Healthy Paws covered... Read More

I've been with Healthy Paws since around June or July 2015 . I had my second pet about for five months ago another dog . I have met my deductible before and been paid a few hundred dollars . Just about three weeks ago my two-year-old female lab got sick needed a ultrasound x-rays bloodwork you name it and the $2500 bill so I paid with my debit card in hopes that I would get something back from the insurance. I took a picture using your app centered in it took them three or four days to process it and another for five days and I received the check in the mail for exactly what they said they would pay 90% of the claim minus the exam fee and food . My friend that also has healthy pause... Read More

The absolute best pet insurance plan. My puppy had emergency neck surgery a few weeks ago. The bills were huge but Healthy Paws paid 80% of almost everything. Their payments were prompt. I was expecting questions about the bill and whether the surgery was necessary but instead I got constant correspondence from the people at Healthy Paws asking how my puppy was doing and sending her their hugs and love. I would absolutely recommend Healthy Paws to anyone who is thinking of getting pet insurance.

Shopping around for pet insurance is a very intimidating process because of all the questions you might have in regards to the insurance company covering your pet in their time of need. After scouring the web and reading tons of reviews, I happened to find Healthy Paws. Right from the start, it was easy and intuitive navigating their website and looking at all of the different options. I called in because I have an older dog and wanted to make sure I understood how the pet insurance worked as this was my very first time signing up. They were extremely knowledgeable and very friendly on the phone. But most of all they were very patient and did not try and force me to purchase it with them... Read More

Healthy Paws are amazing! I have two small dogs insured through them. I have taken them to the ER a few times and Healthy Paws were always quick with reimbursing us for the hospital fees. Their app is amazing too. I don't need to use a computer to file a claim, just take a picture of the paperwork and upload the pics on their app. We are also please with their customer service, they are polite, genuine and really shows concern for your beloved pets. We are very glad and satisfied that we chose Healthy Paws over any other pet insurance.
