Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We have a 2 year old Alaskan Malamute who decided to steal another dog's toy, and proceeded to swallow it! Needless to say, it was a nightmare. With no luck getting her to vomit it up, she required an expensive endoscopic procedure which ended up costing over $2,000. Thank goodness for Heslthy Paws! I photographed and submitted my claim while still at the emergency vet. They have reviewed and payed me already, before receiving my visa bill! I am so thankful that we have Healthy Paws. Best decision that we made! Who would have thought that a young dog could be so expensive!

HealthyPaws has been amazing. They have never given me a hassle for any claims I've submitted, including large bills for unexpected surgery for my dog, and their customer service has been phenomenal. I would recommend them to anyone looking to have a little extra peace of mind when it comes to potentially unforeseen medical expenses for their pet.

This is the quintessential pet insurance that did exactly what they say they will and very affordable. The process was absolutely wonderful, supportive, and honest as well as timely. Don't waste your time trying to find a better pet insurance than Healthy Paws. We are so glad we choose them for our pet(Buddy). Got our reimbursement check yesterday and they allowed 90% of our Vet bill for surgery and all. Thanks for the help and concern when we really needed it. DFC, LFC, and Buddy(Yorkie)

These guys are amazing! After a rather large vet bill for one of them, I began to research pet insurance for my 3 very active Aussies. Unlike several other companies i looked at, Healthy Paws spells coverage and exclusions out clearly on their site and sticks to what they promise. No surprises. I like the annual deductible as well. Within a month of purchase and qualification, one of my other dogs blew out her knee requiring surgery. Submitting her medical history and the claim was easy and payment was fast and as advertised. When she required another surgery less than a year later, submission online was even easier and the check came in a week! I give Healthy Paws my highest... Read More

I've had Healthy Paws pet insurance since I brought my dog home. I have a French Bulldog and I thought she might be at risk of respiratory issues. Well, she's had none of those but certainly some other health issues I would not have been ready for without Healthy Paws. They're not right for everyone - they don't cover regular maintenance or basic doctor visits but with my plan (there are coverage level options), they have covered 90% of two surgeries and two separate hospitalizations for different issues. It's the unplanned events that are hard on a budget but with Healthy Paws, I can worry about my pup and less about my wallet. They also have an easy to use mobile app for claim... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for 4 years now and recommend it to all our friends with pets. Their service is unmatchable and the turn around time is very quick. They genuinely care for your pet and we are so lucky to have our dog Zoe covered by them. Irina Woodland Hills, CA

We purchased dog insurance after losing one of our four legged best friends and it was a huge expense. I never had pet insurance before. When we got our next dog, I decided to research the best pet insurance and Healthy Paws was on the top of the list. After years of no claims and wondering if I was wasting my money, disaster hit! Healthy paws is helping us get through a tough financial time and keeping our wonderful pal with us for the near future. We could never have made it without Healthy Paws. I just take a photo of the bill and forward to their claim dept. I get and almost notice back as having received the claim and then another notice when processed. Within days I get a... Read More

Our 12 year old Boston terrier, Zoe is making an amazing recovery from her conjunctival pedicle graft repair of a descemetocele. Thanks to the emergency eye surgery and Healthy Paws pet insurance she does not have the discharge from her eye and nostril anymore and is no longer at risk for her eye rupturing. We would like to thank the Healthy Paws staff for being easily assessable to call with inquiries and compassionate to our needs. It is always nice to talk to a "live person" rather then a machine when questions and concerns pop up. The app is so easy to use and healthy Paws is always quick to reimburse our veterinarian's medical bills. The caring and professional manner of Healthy... Read More
