Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

OH MY MY MY...........best thing I ever did was buy Pet Insurance through Healthy Paws! I've had 16 dogs in my lifetime, and with this pup (a beautiful Irish Setter named Frankie) I decided to buy insurance for the first time ever. I researched for weeks. This was the company I decided on, and boy am I glad I did. His first year he fell and ripped a hole in his leg, then his neutering turned into a bigger deal, and even though this is not normally covered Healthy Paws heard my case and helped me. AND.....this month, the saddest thing ever, my dog, who is not even 3 years old has cancer. Osteosarcoma. I was devastated, and called HP to see what they covered. Yes, not only did they... Our dog is a brachycephalic breed, and required surgery for her stenotic nares, soft palate, and an unrelated vulvoplasty. We were worried some of these would be considered pre-existing or denied, as many insurers do not cover brachycepalic syndrome treatments, but HealthyPaws approved our claim within 1 or 2 days, and every time we have been in contact with them by phone we have been able to speak to a knowledgeable human almost immediately! Their superb coverage, excellent service, and very affordable rates (out of all the companies we checked they were the least expensive!) have made HealthyPaws a no-brainer for a our family and we cannot recommend them more highly.

Seriously, BLESS HEALTHY PAWS. Do you know how I know Healthy Paws REALLY CARES about keeping pets healthy? Because they REALLY CARE about the pet parents who are responsible for keeping those pets healthy! They have made everything so easy and so turnkey for submitting claims! Then they process claims and reimburse on claims so quickly that those of us pet parents who can't easily shell out hefty sums of money for vet bills aren't left sweating for months, waiting for checks to arrive. I can't recommend them enough- their customer service peeps are awesome too! 👏

We have found Healthy Paws to be simply OUTSTANDING. We adopted our pit/boxer mix at age 7, and took out a policy for him after 3 months, due to not knowing his history. We purchased a policy with a $500 deductible, to lower our monthly payments. Our dog was unexpectedly was diagnosed at 10 years (January 2017) with a Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen - an aggressive cancer in dogs - stage 3. It is very hard to diagnose this before the tumor bursts, which is what happened. Not only did we receive excellent care at UPENN Vet, but Healthy Paws covered almost everything - surgery, meds, oncology, hospital stay for recovery, even the collar (cone of shame), to precent him from licking.... Healthy Paws is an exceptional insurance company. Unfortunately, my dog had two major accidents within a year. Total amount of my bills was >6K. Healthy Paws covered 90% of it!!!! On top of that they constantly stayed in touch with me asking how my dog is doing. I feel that they really care… it makes me think that I am the part of a big family. I am very grateful to be with Healthy Paws. Highly recommend you this company.

I am really happy I signed up with Healthy Paws. My puppy is 4 months old and she needed an endoscopy to remove pebbles she had eaten in our backyard. Healthy paws paid the claim quickly at 90% with no questions asked. Saved me over $2000. I have been a health insurance broker for the last 20 years so I know good service when I see it! These guys are first rate!

A couple years ago, my wife and I decided we should get insurance for our dog Zoey, she was in great health and had tons of energy, but is a big dog and had just turned 7. About 6 months ago we found out that she has a heart condition. Healthy Paws has made all the vet visits, cardiologist visits and medicine much more manageable for us. The customer service has been fantastic. Very professional yet personal at the same time. Getting pet insurance was one of the best decisions we made as pet owners.

Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance company around. We were skeptical about pet insurance until a neighbor recommended it to us (she saw how active and goofy our rescue lab puppy was...) Later that year he hurt his leg and needed surgery, which would have been financially miserable had we not had the accident insurance. (X-rays alone were $400.) The claims process is exceptionally easy and our reimbursement arrived faster than we expected. The customer service is unparalleled. We now recommend Healthy Paws to all of our dog-owning friends and all new pet owners (especially those who are considering adopting a labrador!)

My dog Sasha needed two surgeries on both of her knees and it was her first as well as mine to go through a process such as the one we went through recently. I have had her insured since April of last year and was able to connect with someone each and every time I called Healthy Paws for questions, claims, etc. The staff is amazing and attentive to ever detail and note that is written on her profile. I am truly thankful and grateful for people that genuinely care that my dog gets better.
