Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Penny is my first dog ever, and I knew I wanted to purchase insurance but I was very confused about which to choose. I have had healthy paws for almost 3 years and only had a few minor claims. This year I have experienced a few thousand dollars in claims diagnosing an illness and subsequently treating it. They have been amazing. They pay claims very fast - it's easy to upload your claim and the customer service reps are very nice and personable about your dog. It's easy and effortless - the way it should be when you are worried about your furry baby. I feel like they really care and are a good company to deal with.

I really don't know where me or my spouse would be, or what we'd do, if not for Healthy Paws. We adopted our zoe in April 2016 at 12 weeks old...over the course of her 1st 10 months with us, she has been diagnosed with several health issues & have also had a few emergencies which had we NOT of had Healthy Paws, i'm not sure what the fate of our Zoe would have been. We have never been denied a claim & it has eased so much stress knowing that she will be well cared for...especially knowing that some of her conditions have potential to be life long. My 9-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Charlie, tore both of his ACLs recently, much to our surprise. He has always been such a very healthy dog! Thankfully, he had been insured by Healthy Paws for over a year when this happened, so true to their word almost all of his surgery and related expenses were covered by them. It was so easy, too. They already had his medical records, so I just took a picture of the invoices for his care, used the app to send it and a few weeks after each of the two surgeries, I had checks in hand. I chose Healthy Paws based on the great reviews I read online, and advice from a friend who works in the pet insurance industry. I have had the insurance for less than a year, but it has already payed for itself many times over! I would highly recommend Healthy Paws to all new dog owners. The small monthly payment is worth the peace of mind that you won't be responsible for a $3000 vet bill when you're lil guy chews a bottle of ibuprofen. My pet, Mocha, recently underwent her 2nd TPLO surgery. She had her 1st TPLO surgery 4 months ago and had also underwent surgery to remove over 23 mass growth. I'm thankful for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. It typically takes no more than 1 minute to upload my documentation for the claim and within 72 hours Mocha's claim was processed and a check was mailed. Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver for our dog Moby! He is a 3 year old St. Berdoodle weighing in at 130 lbs. If you've ever had to have surgery for a dog this size, you know how expensive it is. Moby recently underwent emergency surgery for a blockage and it saved his life. Knowing that we had Healthy Paws meant that we never needed to question our ability to save his life due to financial stress. This, unfortunately, is not the first time we've had to use them for a larger ticket item:) They are responsive, process claims immediately, send reimbursement checks AND email to ask about how your pet is healing.

Healthy Paws was the first insurance policy I have ever taken out for one of my pets. As a gift on my Golden’s third birthday I gave her the gift of this insurance. I never wanted to financially be in a position that I couldn’t give her the best medical care if she should ever need it. That day did eventually happen in her eighth year. She was diagnosed and died from a very rapid onset of lymphoma. The tests and medical bills were in the thousands of dollars. There are no cons for Healthy Paws only pros. The submission online of all her invoices to be reimbursed was easy to use. A confirmation came back within a couple of days. If only our human health insurance was so good.... Read More
