Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I genuinely couldn't be happier with Healthy Paws Insurance. The price is competitive, and my first request for a reimbursement went through without any problem. The process is simple (entirely online, no claim forms), and the response is rapid.

This company clearly misleads when stating the "exclusions." After collecting two years of premiums they failed to reimburse one cent (above the $250 deductible) when my dog was injured and required emergency surgery on New Year's Eve. They claimed the exam fee ($50) was actually $110--no explanation. And the subsequent trip to the vet to see if infection had occurred was also nothing but an exam--and though part of the same claim and same accident, was not covered and occurred in the subsequent year. Rubbish. I plan on reporting them to our state's Attorney General.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Pamela - We are sorry that Baby was so ill over the holidays and hope she is doing better. In regards to your claim, it was covered by your policy according to the annual deductible and reimbursement level you chose at enrollment. As with any policy that includes an annual deductible, the deductible has to be met before any reimbursements are made. In your case, there were exam fees in your claims that are excluded by your policy. We make every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit (vet exam, emergency exam fee, specialty or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium.

Healthy Paws have been absolutely amazing in their support of the health issues of our beloved furbaby. Not only is their turnaround super fast, they are also quick to respond to questions via email and on the phone. Our baby had major issues that suddenly came on requiring an MRI and other costly diagnostics, and they covered almost everything. The only thing not covered are the office/exam/consultation fees. The half a star off full score is not for excluding normal office visit fees but rather for excluding consultation fees during hospitalization since at this point in time we as puppy parents dont even get asked by the doctors if we are ok to have another specialist look at our... Healthy Paws made it very easy for me when it came time to submit my first claim. Their customer service representatives were always available to chat over the phone, and each step of the way was so simple (especially with their great Android app!). When it came time to be reimbursed, all I had to do was snap photos of the invoice, submit them through the Android app, and a few days later I was notified a check was on its way. I highly recommend using Healthy Paws for your pet. Without it, I would be facing approximately $8,000. in surgery bills for my dog. Instead, I'm only going to be paying about $1,000. Well worth it!

I have been a Healthy Paws customer for several years. I adopted another dog and added her to our plan in early December. I admit, I was shopping around, but in the end, I stayed with Healthy Paws because it seemed like the best policy for our 2 Havanese dogs. Well, I certainly chose well. Only weeks after adding our Pippa, I noticed she had some red in her right eye. I only noticed it because my husband went to pet her and she gave him the "whale eye". Thinking she had scratched her eye, I watched it for a day or two, but it just kept nagging at me. So, off to the vet, crazy dog momma. I expected the vet to say she had a scratch, or even pink eye, but no, instead I hear "very... Read More

I only had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for 2 months when my 3 year old dog, Sparty, became critically ill a few days before New Years Eve. My veterinarian ran numerous blood tests and x rays and couldn't figure out what was wrong with Sparty so I was sent to a specialist ER clinic where they immediately hospitalized Sparty and began running more blood tests, x-rays and an ultra sound. After 3 days, an obstruction was ruled out and it was determined Sparty was suffering from gastritis and possibel pancreatitis caused by a "gourmet" treat he was given for Christmas. I took a picture of the bills (which seemed enormous to me) and submitted them through the Healthy Paws App. I recieved e... Read More

This is the most caring, efficient, incredible organization! I have been insuring my 2 dogs for 2.5 years. I reluctantly got pet insurance when they turned 6 years old, to be able to help them with age related issues. After investigating several companies, a friend strongly recommended Healthy Paws. Both dogs have had unexpected and complicated surgeries. Healthy Paws helped me throughout the process! They even contacted me to check on how the dog was healing. They paid their part of the bill immediately - I was reimbursed within days! Oh, if only human insurance was as kind and as helpful! Thank you Healthy Paws! I tell everyone who has a dog about you! Like many pet owners, my... Read More

I was totally surprised as to the professionalism and the speedy process for my claim. I never had insurance for my pet before but after many thousand of dollars for my beloved Mr.Gizmo, who didn't make it through a tragic ordeal, I decided to look in to the different policies offered for pets. My new baby- Trooper was just a pup when I signed up, he was in great health! Healthy Paws was the most reasonable priced and seemed to provide the best coverage. I never thought I would need them so quick, but I did! They paid the claim just as advertised and I receive my check very quickly. It was almost $1,300.00 from Healthy Paws and it paid just as it said it would!! I recommend them to evry... Read More

My greyhound became critically ill very quickly after ingesting a foreign body. She required expensive emergency surgery to remove the foreign body. Knowing that I had insurance through Healthy Paws, I did not hesitate to go forward with the surgery. Without the surgery, my dog would have died. The day after the surgery, while my dog was still in ICU, I contacted Healthy Paws and advised them of the situation. They began immediately obtaining the necessary records from the veterinarians. I easily uploaded the final invoices into the Healthy Paws app and was promptly reimbursed under the terms of my policy, within 7-10 business days. The reimbursement process was very easy and I am thankful... Read More
