Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our wonderful cat had a rough year. First he had a urinary blockage requiring a short stay in the hospital. Then a few months later he was back in the hospital again. The vets were first thinking he had a fatal virus, but later he was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis. Throughout the entire stressful process and fear of losing our beloved animal, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance was literally a life saver. Our cat's care was incredibly expensive (in total over $5000) and the cost of his care would have been crippling for my family. Healthy Paws was incredibly easy to work with and their app made submitting claims quick and painless. They covered what they said they would and even followed... Read More

We can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. Unfortunately we have had to use our insurance pan many times over the past 6 months and each time the claim process has been smooth, fast and always to our satisfaction. In fact this past week our Cattle Dog needed surgery on his leg, a multi $1,000's operation. Healthy Paws arranged to reimburse our Vet directly for their share of the bill and our Vet was paid within hours of submitting the invoice. This service alone is worth the price of coverage. Every time I needed help over the phone the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and responsive. I've asked our Vet to please promote Healthy Paws to all their patients.

The Healthy Paws pet insurance & Foundation have proven to be a life saver (and a wallet saver). We have had the unfortunate experience of having our beautiful German Shepherd, Harper undergo TWO surgeries on her hind legs! And poor little girl is only 4 years old. I can attest the Healthy Paws is prompt, professional, friendly and responsive. I received payment shortly after submitting the claims. They are reliable and a pleasure to work with.

Tim Weiss, Claws & Paws Protector at Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation sent me an amazing email to see how my two dogs were doing after their respective surgeries. I was thrilled to report that both had their stitches out the day prior and were doing great!! Thanks to Tim and Healthy Paws for being so incredible. I have been telling everyone that I don't know what I would have done without this company and how timely the claims were processed. It means a lot! I will not need to file a claim again anytime soon but it is a very good feeling to know the Healthy Paws team is there if I do need to do so. Simply OUTSTANDING on every level. Easy claim filing, super fast reimbursement.... Read More

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. My 95 lb Airedale, Reilly, recently needed surgery on his knee. On the day I picked him up after the surgery, I paid his bill and went to wait for a tech to give me post op teaching. While waiting, I opened the Healthy Paws app on my phone. Literally three taps and two photos later (less than two minutes), I was done filing my claim. I quickly began receiving updates on my claim, so I never wondered about its status. Three business days later, I was advised my reimbursement check was on its way. Even with our business completed, they contacted me to see how Reilly is feeling. A lot of times, insurance companies feel like the adversary, but... Read More

One of my dogs tore her ACL and I got the unfortunate news that surgery was the best option for her. As scared as I was I new it was the right thing to do for her. The fact that she has Healthy Paws coverage was a godsend so I could fully concentrate on her needs and her recovery and not the cost. Plus they even checked in to see how she was doing - even my health insurance doesn't check in on me when I'm sick! I highly recommend Health Paws to anyone who truly cares for their pets health.

I have had policies with several pet insurance companies over the years. Healthy Paws is my absolute favorite. Shorter waiting period after sign up; annual deductable instead of by incident or illness; includes complementary practices without a rider (requires a vet on the premises, though); attractive super easy mobile phone app for submitting claims (snap a picture of the invoice and it’s on its way); quick response; in our experience, no arguments about coverage the way some other insurers do; personable assistance when needed; easy to add additional pets. I find myself telling friends, relatives and total strangers in stores and vet offices about Healthy Paws, highly recommending that... Read More

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for always being there when we really needed it. Choosing Healthy Paws insurance when we got our puppy about 6 years ago was one of the best decisions I have ever made. You make everything so simple and worry free. My family (and Lexi) appreciate that and I can not say enough great things about Healthy Paws and always tell anyone I know who gets a pet to check your website. Thanks again !!!

I signed up for insurance coverage with a different carrier for my first whippet, Indy, three years ago after a major incident and at the advice of the hospital where she received care. Fortunately, since then she has has no incidents for which we needed to use insurance. However, after the first year, with the first insurance company and despite no claims, there was a significant rate hike. I started researching for the most highly rated carrier and found that Healthy Paws consistently got stellar reviews and now I know why. We switched carriers. When we got our second whippet, Enzo, we added him to our Healthy Paws policy. Handling two dogs is quite a feat, especially two wriggly... Read More
