Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Let me start by saying that I never believed in pet insurance. I thought it was one of those hokey, snake oil types of deals. In 2015, I lost two dogs and ended up spending close to $12,000 for their care that year alone. When I looked into Healthy Paws, and what my cost COULD have been, I honestly felt a little sick to my stomach. I researched all of the companies out there and found that Healthy Paws has the best coverage, best price, and easiest system to use. It was a complete no brainer. I have it for my two new rescues and have already reaped the benefits. My husband is currently out of work and our poor guy had to lose an eye to glaucoma. We NEVER would have been able to... I have 2 dogs, both strays. One was a stray from Panama (Chooki) which I brought over with me to Miami and the other we adopted from our local shelter (Louie). From day 1, Louie was sick with pneumonia, kennel cough, and high fever. The day after we picked him up from the shelter we were dropping him off at an overnight animal hospital to run tests and get an IV. We spent almost $2,000 that first night! And at the time, we had insurance with Pet Smart "Bansfield". They only covered preventative costs, such as shots, regular visits, and ear cleanings. Since my pets were really healthy, I didn't see the need to switch the insurance, until that night. While at the hospital, I picked up a... Read More

I wish our Human Health Insurance was as easy to use. You take a photo of your invoice and upload it via the app and you only have only wait a few days for Healthy Paws to process your claim. Plus they are genuinely concerned for your pet. After our dog had to undergo an endoscopy they wrote a week or so later to find out how our dog was feeling. I recommend them without reservations!

Kudos to Healthy Paws for making the insurance claim and coverage process so simple. Recently my pet Bacon had to be admitted to Medvet hospital for severe infection. After the treatment, all I had to do is upload pictures of the bill using their app. The claim was processed amazingly quickly and the reimbursement check came in before my credit card came up due for payment!!!! Subsequently they emailed to check up on how my pet was doing!!! - was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this service for its Quick processes and for a caring / friendly customer service. Kudos!!!

Healthy Paws has covered our two pups for over five years. They have consistently processed claims expeditiously during that time and have been very responsive to our questions/concerns. Our Lab, Figgie, recently underwent knee surgery, totaling $4,668.90. I filed the claim through their website on Friday and it was processed by Sunday afternoon. Healthy Paws covered the entire claim with no questions asked. Check was received ($4,202.01, reflecting their 90% responsibility) within four days. They even followed up to see how she was doing and offered to help with her rehab. Can't ask for better service than that! Very pleased with them.

Best insurance I've had. I wish I knew of this company with my last dog that'll take me 5+yrs to pay off. 1)One deductible per year, not per incident. 2)All inclusive, no learning of side packages you "should've had" after the fact so you're not covered. That's what killed me financially with the last company I used. Well, that and a pay out cap 3)No pay out cap. Makes decision making, needed care.. not to mention less stressful and more peace of mind you can provide your furry family the best chance possible. I've told probably 8 people about this plan who have joined. One who had a great experience with Healthy Paws after her dog was bitten by a snake and another who had to have... Read More

I recently enrolled my two young Somali cats with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. I am so glad I did!! Because on Thanksgiving Day, Malibu came barreling down the hall, upsetting the cat tree and sending his sister, Jodhi, flying into the wall, breaking her left foreleg. Her injury required surgery - necessary but pretty expensive. At the time, I had no idea whether I could trust insurance to cover the costs. Then I took a deep breath and submitted my claim. Healthy Paws made the process so easy. They were kind, caring and so incredibly efficient. I cannot recommend them highly enough! They are great! And if you are looking for a good way to protect your beloved pets, sign up NOW!

I've had my Boston since he was 10 weeks old and shortly obtained Healthy Paws after getting him. Oliver turned 5 years in October 2016 and just a couple weeks later showed concerning and painful behavior. I took him to his regular vet for diagnosis, an emergency vet the next day and then another emergency vet the third day on a Saturday for an emergency MRI that required immediate neck surgery for ruptured discs in his neck. Almost $7,000 for the 3 days of treatment. Although most of us would do anything for our pals, knowing I had HP allowed me without hesitation to tell the docs to do whatever they needed to do to treat him. Some people wouldn't be able to. This was not my first... Read More

Healthy Paws was amazing. We have been a client for years and have luckily only needed to submit one claim. They should try their hands as a company at people health insurance. Working with Healthy Paws has been not just easy, but a joy. The entire process is clear, refined, fast and empathetic. The follow up email checking on our dog was a delightful, caring surprise. Fantastic all around.
