Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We are thrilled with Caitlin's Healthypaws insurance. She is just 2 years old but has already had major surgery and an illness requiring ICU admission. The bills would have incapacitated us but with the low deductible and high percentage of payment from Healthypaws, our share was small compared to the total cost. I think the smartest thing we ever did (besides adopting Caitlin) was insuring her at Healthypaws!

Excellent service! My furbaby Ziggy had surgery to repair a torn ACL. I filed with Healthy Paws and a couple of days later they asked for his regular vet's records. Unfortunately by then I was out of town and didn't reply as promptly as I should have. But not to worry! Healthy Paws contacted the vet and got the required documents. Next thing I knew, I got an email telling me that all was taken care of and that I would receive a check! Yay! I totally recommend Healthy Paws.

I cannot recommend Healthy Paws highly enough. I adopted a dog and due to Vet miscommunication I didn't get a proper check up done on pick up (even tho at the time they said it was enough to use for insurance purposes, later they said it wasnt). So a month later my dog was diagnosed with a serious leg issue and I didn,t have the correct pre insurance exam paperwork. So Insurance wouldn't pay right? Wrong. Healthy Paws worked so hard with me to help, and ended up accepting my dog's adoption paperwork in lieu of the correct exam. It was traumatic enough to find my furkid had osteosarcoma. I didn't need added stress of fighting with the insurance company. (which I frequently did with a previous company). Healthy Paws had an incredibly fast turn around so that I was able to bank the money before the payment was due. And they covered exactly what they said they would. There was no guessing what I would get back (again unlike the previous company I had). And they even asked how my little girl was doing several days after the claim was complete. Just about all the greyhound owners on the bulletin board I belong to are HP clients. Hands down this is the favorite company amongst the dog owners of this group.

I never thought I'd even consider pet insurance, but thank goodness I got it. When I had my first claim, I was prepared for problems! Well, no problems, in fact I've been amazed at the customer service. My pet baby almost died, I'm so thankful I didn't have to think about cost. I've received emails from Healthy Paws just checking to see how my baby is doing. Oh and payment was received within days!! Well worth the cost (very affordable)!

Healthy Paws Customer Care staff is amazing. They have been so kind, understanding, sympathetic and efficient in handling our claim for our 6-year old beagle who developed an extremely aggressive cancer that took him from us in only 1 month's time. They were very helpful with assisting me in filing the claim, and followed up with me every step of the way, advising if they needed additional information to process the claim, and contacting my vet to get the info they needed. They completed the process within a week and paid exactly what I expected based on the policy I had. Healthy Paws is all you could ask for and more! Filing a claim is simple and they always get back to you so quickly. After they review your claim, they'll send you an invoice and have your check shipped within a few days! I want to commend Healthy Paws staff for helping me coordinate with the hospital while my dog was being attended to after falling off a cliff. The sticker shock for taking her to the best emergency care vet was another 1-2 punch on top of the stress of dealing with her emergency. Healthy Paws staff made me feel at ease immediately. I happened to be on the phone with HP's representative while the doctor came into the room with my dogs assessment and estimate for her veterinary care through her recovery period. I recently had to file my first claim for my cat who had a freak accident and fractured her leg from a fall the week before Thanksgiving and required orthopedic surgery. After submitting my claim, HealthyPaws was prompt in letting me know what medical records they needed and were very helpful when I followed up that they received everything to begin processing my claim. Once I was assured that they had all the information they needed (all documents received by Tuesday of Thanksgiving week), my claim was processed and completed by the end of Friday the same week (remember this is during the holidays??). My lovely rescue puppy Gunner is a frequent flyer at the vet (food allergies, ear infections, and foreign objects are his favorite LOL). Our recent "episode" required Gunner to undergo emergency surgery to remove "stuff" from his tummy. Healthy Paws reviewed our claim, approved it AND sent a follow up email to check on the lil guy. The processing is fast and if they have a question...no worries cause you will be notified ASAP. I find the coverage to be awesome (we've used it A LOT during this 1st year).
