Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our pets had been insured with another company for 7 years. I was not satisfied with the customer service and had been thinking about changing insurance companies for a few years. Last year I found Healthy Paws and we became part of their insurance family earlier this year. What a blessing! They have been so welcoming, easy to do business with, efficient, kind, and caring. We recently had a very scary emergency with our very healthy Rocky. He had to be rushed to the Emergency Vet Hospital and we found out he was bleeding internally and would die without immediate surgery. Healthy Paws could not have been more supportive. They were communicating with us throughout the claim, and not just... Read More

A scam. Paid for two dogs for years without any claims but when one had an infected tooth which needed to be extracted, I got $0.00 refund. They claimed it was preventive. You are better off opening an account to which you put a certain amount every month to be used when you have an emergency.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Maya - We’re never happy when we have to deny a claim for one of our clients. Our complete accident and illness plan covers injury to the teeth if it is caused by an accident, including extractions and reconstruction of damaged teeth. Like most pet insurance companies, our plan does not cover the regular dental care required to maintain dental hygiene for the pet, including brushing, scaling, polishing, extractions and reconstructions. Fortunately, your Healthy Paws policy covered your previous claims. We’re sorry to lose you as a customer and hope you and your pets stay well.

There are no words to describe what an amazing company this is. When our pug needed emergency life saving surgery, I only had to worry about getting her well, not how we were going to pay for it. Every email and phone call interaction I had with them during this time was filled with compassion, as they truly cared about my pet. I even had my reimbursement checks before her stitches were out. Healthy Paws made the entire process easy and they run a business that truly cares. Everyone should insure their "fur child" with Healthy Paws.

just cancelled my policy after a year. Got my girl spayed. Not covered I know. The next day she collapsed and had emergency surgery. She was bleeding internally. Stayed in hospital. Healthy paws covered nothing! Their response was it was due to the spay! Really! She needed blood, plasma, sonograms, etc. Not one penny did they cover on a $2700 bill. Mind you my deductible was met!

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Mary, We are never happy when we have to deny a claim for one of our clients. Healthy Paws makes every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Since your pet’s recent claim was related to her routine spay (spay/neuter procedures are considered preventative), it was not eligible for coverage. The Healthy Paws Team

My Australian Shepherd Chloe has been covered by Healthy Paws for years. She's had other minor health issues in the past that I had to take out multiple credit cards to cover without having pet insurance. We recently discovered that she has a rare heart condition and a pacemaker implantation would save her life. I wouldn't have been able to afford this major surgery without Healthy Paws. Submitting claims are extremely easy, they don't question every detail of the bill and will thoroughly look over it for you to see which parts are covered aka %80. I got my check within 2 weeks and can sleep at night not having to worry about my finances while I take care of my recovering pup.

After researching several pet insurance companies, we decided to go with Healthy Paws because of their great reviews and ratings. While insurance is one of those bets you hope you never need to use, it’s reassuring to know that it’s there when you need it. Our otherwise-healthy Scottish terrier became very sick one night and required emergency surgery and several days in the hospital to recover. While our primary concern was the health and survival of our dog, the mounting bills weighed on our minds as well. It was comforting to know that Healthy Paws would be there. Having heard and experienced horror stories about the claims process with human insurance, we were prepared for the... Read More

I researched several pet insurance companies before finally choosing Healthy Paws. This company has surpassed my expectations. I use the mobile app to file claims, which is quick and easy. They process claims quickly and I always receive a reimbursement check within a week of filing a claim. And their customer service is wonderful.

Healthy Paws came thru after losing my pet. After his loss came the stress of the vet bills. I had just insured both my pets with Healthy Paws, both had wellness exams in March 2016 I applied for the health insurance in August 2016 not thinking I would need to use it as both Cats are young a 4 year old and 3 year old.Unfortunatelay my 4 year old became ill on September 28 2016 we had a initial vet visit afterwards I took him home and was to return the next day after blood tests came in. However in the middle of the night I hade to rush him to emergency vet where he stayed for 24 hours and then back to my Vet where she tried everything to save him however on October 2 2016 I had to let him... I cannot recommend Healthy Paws enough. I have a 1.5 year old boston terrier who has had to be at the vet more times than I'd like in his short life, and every time, Healthy Paws has made it possible to get the care he needs. I don't worry that they won't cover something, or that claim processing will take too long. Their app makes submission of claims and reimbursement a breeze - with very quick turnarounds. Their customer service is great too -- extremely responsive and helpful. Based on what I've heard from friends with insurance through other providers, Healthy Paws is far and away the best. You won't regret choosing them!
