Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Without Healthy Paws Pet Insurance I would have had to say goodbye to my beloved Teddy. The choice to treat him for his spine and disc problems were only possible with Healthy Paws. The x-rays, MRI, surgery and hospitalization plus the medications and follow up blood work and visits to monitor his progress were overwhelmingly costly. You never failed us. Reimbursement was prompt, your staff is kind and professional (great combination). Teddy is home, watching me write this and we are both grateful and happy!

After I pay the first $100 for the year they cover 90%. Shortly after rescuing our dog he grew a tumor and they paid for the $1,400 surgery in about 2 weeks.... before the credit card bill even came. They sent emails asking how he was doing. They're truly amazing. Their phone menu is easy to operate too. After pressing only 2 buttons you're talking to a real person who has everything they need in front of them. Much easier than human insurance!

When I first got pet insurance for our Golden Retriever, people thought I was silly. However, after a trip to the emergency department with him and no insurance, I didn't want to risk it. We signed up when Lutsen was a year and a half old and I couldn't be happier with my decision. This past July, he was diagnosed with severe hip displasia and we were devastated. Having enrolled in Healthy Paws over 3 years ago, meant his surgery and all things involving his care would be covered based on the plan we chose. It was such a relief to know I didn't have to worry about paying out of pocket for everything which amounted to thousands! They even emailed a week after Lutsen's surgery just to see... Read More

My entire experience with Healthy Paws was so incredibly positive. We had scare with our mini doxie requiring emergency surgery, and when I called to clarify some billing/logistical issues, the rep I spoke with reassured me that the most important thing was our dog's health. It was so reassuring to hear that at the time. All three of her emergency room claims were paid very quickly and I could not be happier with their customer support and compassion!

I have had Healthy Paws for a couple years now. My experience so far has been exceptional communication and customer service. Each time a claim is submitted I get personalized email letting me know that it was received by my medical provider and a note asking me how my animal is doing. In October of this year, I experienced a devastating medical emergency with one of my cats. My cat Louie was shot with a pellet gun and had to have a $5,000 life saving surgery. It was a relief to hear back from Healthy Paws within one week after the clam was submitted, letting us know they were covering their 80% and a check was on it's way. A couple weeks later, received a follow-up email asking me how... Read More

This company has been a god send, my little rescue Rosie at the age of 18 months tore her ACL's in both knees requiring extensive surgery and the cost of those surgery without complications was something I couldn't have done with Healthy Paws. Due to complications that happened during Rosie's first surgery her bill for the first leg exceeded $11,000.00 the second leg was repaired October 25th at a cost of $4500.00. Healthy Paws has stuck by us repaying 90% of all costs with the exception of exam fees. They are up front about what would be covered from the very beginning. I would suggest them in a heart beat and my recommendation would be higher then 5 stars because without them I... Read More

As new pet parents, Healthy Paws has been absolutely fantastic and seamless in helping us when our 2.5 year rescued dog fell sick and had to be hospitalized in ICU for 4 days. We were worried sick and at least did not have to worry about the financial drain, THANKS to Healthy Paws. We will be lifelong customers!

We couldn't be happier with our Healthy Paws policy, their level of professionalism, customer service, and their responsiveness. Our dog recently became very ill and required hospitalization for about 10 days. The costs were overwhelming, in the thousands of dollars. Within days of filing our claim we received a personal email from a Healthy Paws rep (Tim Weiss) asking us how our dog was doing and checking on her recovery. About a week after filing our claim we received our reimbursement check in the mail. We plan on recommending Healthy Paws to all of our pet owner friends and also adding a policy for our cat. We're fortunate to have been covered during such a scary (and costly)... Read More

Healthy Paws has been amazing from day 1. After doing some research and seeing HP was rated the highest, we signed up almost immediately after adopting our pet from the shelter. Literally the day after our 2 week probationary period, we had to take our dog to the emergency room. I downloaded the HP app, made a profile for Luna and submitted the receipt, no questions asked, after our deductible, they sent us a reimbursement within a week. Our pup has has had a slew of health issues there has never been a problem! The most recent health was a torn ACL which is a major surgery. I called and asked questions, all of which were clearly answered and soon after her surgery was once again quickly... Read More

I have had Health Paws for almost two years and have had nothing but great experiences with them. Sadly, I have had to use by insurance benefits but they have made sure it was easy and I got my reimbursement back super fast. Couldn't have picked a better plan. They even follow up with me on how Baxter was doing. Excellent all the way around!!!!!
