Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot say enough great things about Healthy Paws. My Frenchie Pork Chop was throwing up all night and my regular vet did not have any openings on a Saturday. I had to take him to an emergency facility where they found an intestinal blockage and he needed surgery right away. Before agreeing to any payment with the facility, I called Healthy Paws to make sure the items the vet was quoting me were in fact covered under my plan. Healthy Paws was able to reassure me that my claim would be covered so that I could proceed with Pork Chop's care quickly. I am happy to say that he is now on the mend, and I submitted my claim to Healthy Paws and within hours I was notified that everything was... Read More

My wife and I love your organization. Your compassion, professionalism and sincerity is greatly appreciated. Xena is recovering nicely thank God, it was unfortunate that she had to have a second surgery. Thank you again for providing excellent customer service and great pet insurance.

Healthy paws pet insurance is the absolute best insurance company I've ever had the pleasure of working with. My 7 month old yellow lab had to have emergency surgery and not only was making a claim extremely easy (they have an easy to use app for your phone) but we received a reimbursement check within 10 days! They were even kind enough to inquire about my pets recovery and health. I could not be happier with Healthy Paws insurance and will be recommending them to every pet owner I know! Thank you healthy paws!

Healthy Paws is hands down the best pet insurance company in existence! They couldn't be any better. This is coming from someone who works in the insurance industry herself, so I know what good insurance looks like. Healthy Paws is the most affordable and has the best coverage. I only pay $16 a month per kitten. With other companies I did price quotes on, It would have been $40 a month per kitten. Best of all, Healthy Paws recently made a very traumatic night, not quite so traumatic. My little boy, Phillip, spiked a 106 degree fever. I bawled my eyes out in the vet's arms, I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. The one bright spot in that horrible night was knowing that I would be partially... Read More

After extensive research, we selected Healthy Paws pet insurance in June for our two new Goldendoodle puppies. In early July, our 18 week old, Ziggy, swallowed a rock from our backyard which required major surgery to remove. He was in intensive care for three days. Needless to say, this was a very traumatic and expensive experience for all of us. We feel so happy that we chose Healthy Paws. They processed our claim and mailed our check within days after the vet paperwork was submitted. The process was simple - all online. The customer service staff at Healthy Paws is awesome! I received an email at the end of July inquiring about Ziggy's recovery. I didn't expect that - an insurance... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws pet insurance for the past two years and have always had a great experience with them. The monthly cost is very affordable. After my dog was hit by a car, she had almost $5000 in medical bills and Healthy Paws had amazing customer service when I called regarding my claims and I was reimbursed in a timely fashion. My dog has almost fully recovered and I feel at ease knowing that Healthy Paws will be there in case something else ever happens to her.

Healthy Paws is the first and only pet insurance company I have used. My Boxer dog was insured with them and they were excellent. The claims submission process could not be easier and the payout is very quick (usually under a week) and very easy to understand. I would highly recommend them.

Healthy Paws is absolutely amazing! I signed up both my Italian Greyhounds a little over a year ago. I initially debated on whether or not I should get insurance for them because both of them were healthy, but since I'm a teacher, I knew I couldn't afford large vet bills if they ever did become sick or injured. Thank God Almighty that I did! A few weeks ago, a mass was found in one of my dog's lungs. It needed to be removed and biopsied. Thank goodness she is Cancer free!! However, if she had not been, I would've had to figure out how to pay for Chemo and Radiation as well. My Shiloh is only 7 years young. :) If I had not had insurance for her, it would've been approximately $7,500 and... Read More

Bringing a new family member home is exciting! Making sure that you have insurance to cover things you don't expect can be difficult. Healthy Paws makes the process simple and is extremely customer focused. We have had insurance for the past four years with our lab and when we brought home our basset, we immediately added her to our plan. Coverage is vast, plans are diverse (we use the $100 deductible, 90% reimburse plan) and customer service is outstanding. Our lab just had cataract surgery and the claim was sent in the next morning, processed and reimbursement headed out the door the same day. When our lab had issues in her first year with a neck injury, we received the same turn... Read More
