Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have had a wonderful experience with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Never had coverage before & have paid out lots for my pet family throughout the years. I found Healthy Paws Pet Ins to be so easy to work with. Submitted my bills & pet history & the claims were paid immediately. I must admit Healthy Paws Pet Ins has been easier to work with than some of the insurance carriers I work with for Humans on a daily basis!! I am just so thankful I signed my little guy up, you never know when you will need the coverage.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is absolutely the BEST! I have had this insurance since my dogs were puppies. I have had to use it three times with one dog and one time with my other dog. They are INCREDIBLE!!! Claims are processed so fast--this last time, when both dogs were treated for raisin toxicity, it literally took 45 minutes from the time I submitted the claim on line, to receiving an email from Healthy Paws that the claims were completed and a check was in the mail. I received payment in about 3 days. I don't understand why a pet insurance company can be so efficient, yet in the human world, things are so screwed up. I want to be a dog, see my veterinarian for medical care, and have... Read More

I enrolled my dogs Chilli and Kaya for Healthy Paws Insurance last year and just a month later my dog Chilli tore her ligament. She had to get a TPLO surgery done for her right hind knee and then had to go through Physical therapy. Under a year later she tore the ligament on her left knee and had to have the surgery again with Physical Therapy. Healthy Paws has so far covered over $13500 for us. We wouldnt have been able to afford her surgeries and PT without Healthy Paws. We love how easy it is to file a claim, their wonderful customer service and also how quickly we get reimbursed. I'd recommend this to anyone with a pet.

Anyone that has a pet knows accidents and unexpected illnesses happen. As a pet parent to 4 dogs and 1 cat, I have had my share of both. In the past years my dogs have had 2 eye tumor removals, scratched cornea, mammary gland tumor removal, seizures, mass tumor removal, chiari malformation, allergies and the list continues. Healthy Paws was there for us through all of the procedures. I honestly don't know if my pets would have received the necessary care if I didn't have Healthy Paws. They allowed me to worry about my pets and not the financial aspect. I also have to commend their staff and the easy process of submitting a claim. I spend a lot of time at the animal hospital and I... Read More

I cannot say enough great things about Healthy Paws- they have been rated #1 a few years in a row for a reason. I had pet health insurance with another company with my dog that has since passed (when I rescued her, she came with it) and it took SIX weeks to get my reimbursement check. With HP, my reimbursement check arrives about a week to 10 days after I have submitted my claim. This is unprecedented. In fact, their app is SO easy to use -just take a picture of your bill and send- that I received an email two hours later that my claim had been processed! Incredible! Healthy Paws is reasonably priced as well that you would be a fool not to get it. It takes two seconds to sign up online as... Read More

Healthy Paws insurance is the real deal. One of our pet recently had major surgery and I was very impressed with the customer service of Healthy Paws. The surgery took place on a Thursday and in less than one week we have received reimbursement for the claim. They exceeded my expectations both in responsiveness and genuine concern for my pet. They deserve an award of Excellence.

Our furbaby is 3 years old yellow lab who unfortunately tore his ACL/CCL and had to go through TPLO surgery, I am so glad we took Healthy Paws Pet insurance since he was puppy. Healthy Paw covered 90% of the bill for his surgery and in very timely manner. Having 3 pups in house, we have filed claims a lot in past with Healthy Paws. It was very easy to file claim online and get refund super fast. We have all my 3 fur babies covered with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and this was our best decision ever. We would definitely recommend everyone to have Healthy Paws as insurance for their fur babies.

I wanted to share the great success that we have had with our HEALTHY PAWS PET INSURANCE for our nearly 3 yr-old Great Dane Tank our 10 month-old Basset Hound, Chubbers. Although Tank is not quite 3 yrs-old, he has had two neuro-surgeries, a broken tail which resulted in an infection and eventual amputation, the removal of his anal glands (due to a likely related infection) and various other more minor problems. Although he is very healthy today, these surgeries have cost in excess of $35,000. Our little Chubbers (who likes to eat things and get obstructed) has had two surgeries and other expenses exceeding $12,000. For all of these problems we have paid a total of 10%. The insurance has... Read More
