Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My husband and I have 3 fur babies, Pekoe is our lil boy cat. He wandered into our garage and our hearts one night and we fell in love with him immediately. We were horrified to discover that he had a "lesion" inside his mouth, if you have a cat you know they aren't real willing to let you see inside their mouths, it was discovered by his vet during his yearly checkup. The vet said he must be in pain, although he didn't really have any way of letting us know. The vet determined that all but 2 canines would have to be pulled due to severe dental disease. The cost would be around $1000.00. We submitted the bill to Healthy Paws, but did not have an exam during the past 30 days, or the 15... Read More

Healthy Paws is amazing! I insured my Siberian Husky (Akira) after devastating medical bills with another Husky I owned years ago and said I would never have a dog without having insurance. Best decision I ever made! Akira ate a rock that got lodged in her small intestine, requiring emergency surgery and Healthy Paws was there with me every step of the way to ensure everything was taken care of so all I needed to worry about was getting my dog better. I have encouraged my family and friends to get pet insurance with Healthy Paws so they can have the same peace of mind that I have! I had four claims, totaling around $5,000 and received reimbursement checks today in the mail. She... Read More

My dog is alive today because of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. It's easy to say that the Vet saved his life after Roscoe contracted leptospirosis, but without a way to pay for the $1,800 cost of his treatment, Roscoe would not have received his lifesaving care. Instead of having to be "put down," Roscoe is alive today and a hyper Boston Terrier because Healthy Paws does not have annual or lifetime coverage limits. They took my calls, answered all of my questions and processed claims within 1-2 days after I uploaded the invoices. I recently rescued a second Boston named Ruby. Adding her to the Healthy Paws policy was the first thing I did when we got home. I hope this review helps. If... Read More

Best insurance ever. Our dog is our baby and we needed to make sure she was insured in case anything ever happened. We just had to use the insurance for the first time when she needed bladder surgery :( The claim went through super fast and smoothly and was processed immediately. However, a couple days later I received an email from one of the insurance agents checking on Yoki's well-being and asking to give her a hug. That hands-down was the sweetest thing. I wouldn't go with any other insurance, they are caring, animal-loving and strive to provide best and fast service. You are in great hands here!

We decided to choose Healthy Paws after an extensive online search. At the time our French Bulldog was healthy and we were not sure it was worth it to spend the monthly money. She is currently 4 years old and had a benign cyst removed from her face. The insurance policy covered the policy at 90% minus the deductible. The claim process was very easy and fast to use. Only 6 weeks later our dog had an accident in the park that resulted in her breaking her leg. It was a very scary and stressful time but I honestly felt some relief on our way to the hospital knowing that we didn’t have to worry about how to pay for such an expensive injury. As soon as we had the hospital bill in hand I... Read More

I had to write a review I just filed my first 2 claims. It was so easy I just signed on, attached my scanned bill, attached my scanned vets letter of condition treated, ticked a box agreeing to the terms and conditions. 2 minutes later an acknowledgement of receipt email, 48 hours later an email saying my claim status was totally completed. The paperwork received was very clear, I could see what was deducted and what was paid. Easy quick process is important to me, I'm a busy Mom with a puppy, time is short. I also called their help line to enquire about one that I didn't put in immediately, no long menu to go through, quick answer and they were very polite and not a problem to file... Read More

Just submitted my first claim to Healthy Paws - a fairly large bill. The claim process was easy and I had my check in less than a week, for the full amount that the policy covers. Very impressed with the service!

Nothing but amazing things to say about this company. Stay away from providers that cap payouts. If you love you furry friends then HealthyPaws is an awesome choice. We have had major surgeries and emergencies for both our dogs and have received nothing but fast, friendly and carefree dealings.

I researched many pet plans before I chose Healthy Paws for my new puppy. Of course, I thought I wouldn't need it until she got much older. Well... she just had to have major elbow surgery and having Healthy Paws has been great! The claims process is so easy, and they paid all her claims in a timely manner. I will recommend them to friends and family, and now have piece of mind in case anything else happens.

Dixie is our sweet baby. We made the decision to purchase pet insurance when she first came into our home, we chose Heathy Paws based on reviews and have been so happy we made that choice. Healthy Paws has been just wonderful. Filing claims on line is quick and easy, they send a confirming email within in just a few days and the reimbursement check is received within a week to 10 days. I would recommend to any responsible pet owner that they purchase pet insurance and I highly recommend Healthy Paws.
