Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I did allot of research on Pet Insurance companies before choosing Healthy Paws as the company we went with. Not only did we look at what they covered for our pet, but we looked at the customer reviews of how they felt about the company itself and that was what finally sold us. We could not be happier with our choice and there are so many reasons why: the ease of submitting a claim through your Ap - the quick response to the claim with communication throughout the entire process - and a detailed explanation of payment within less than a week turn around in most of our cases. To top it off, the Ap has great pet tips available to read and catch up on and the Customer Service is... Read More

Several years ago when our oldest cat got sick, we spent over $7,000 in vet bills. Our angel ended up passing away. At that point I realized just how important health insurance is for your pets. We did everything we could for Mowlgi, but it made me think about decisions some people are faced with, when they do not have the funds to do everything possible to get their pet well. It was then that I started looking into pet insurance. I now have my two kitties insured with Healthy Paws. I highly recommend this company. They are very responsive with claims and stand behind their policy. What you sign up for is what you get. I've been very pleased with their service and quick payment on... Read More

I have nothing but great things to say about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. From my experience so far, they have been true to their word about what they will cover vs. what they will not cover. In addition to having great coverage that is accurately represented on their website, what stands out to me the most about Healthy Paws is their fantastic customer service! I had to call them a few times about questions that I had related to my claims. Every time that I called, the people that I spoke with were so nice, helpful, and informative. They also had great communication throughout the whole claim process and also in the follow-up. Lastly, I found the process to submit claims to be... Read More

Our silver lab, Koa, managed to get into a baby bag while we were at work. He opened and ate a few items to include baby food and a bottle of Advil. The bottle was not full, but we had no idea how many pills were in the bottle. We immediately took him to the Animal Hospital in a new state (we recently moved from Arizona to Virginia). Koa was admitted to the hospital for treatment after a consultation with the animal poison control. In all, Koa spent 8 days in the hospital on 24/7 IV fluids and medications for his gastrointestinal tract. I checked the Healthy Paws app and website to verify what I already knew: that his services would be covered. I had two conversations a day with... Read More

I want to thank healthy paws for actually covering what was promised. We originally had aspca pet insurance from the day we got him and in the first few months he became sick and constantly had diarrhea. We had to bring him in the middle of the night and spent $600 at the emergency vet. Although we had a 90% plan, they didn't even cover 40% of the bill. Additionally, aspca insurance had a higher monthly fee. We read reviews on healthy paws and switched. For the vomiting a few weeks ago, we were nervous as the bill was almost $600 for our first visit and then around $1500 for the second. We didn't want to have to choose between our dogs care and coming up with $2000 from our savings... Read More

My dog had emergency stomach surgery and I was so thankful we had insurance with Healthy Paws! I was shocked at how easy it was to submit my claim. I down loaded the ap, uploaded a picture of my invoices and clicked send. It was literally that simple! I was even more shocked when I got an email a few days later from a representative at Healthy Paws asking how Sonny was doing! I was so impressed!! They really made a very stressful situation much easier! I have told everyone I know who has a pet that they MUST contact Healthy Paws! They have a customer for life!

Our 1 1/2 old mini dachshund Kate had a nasty MRSA outbreak which put her in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. She was on IV and a lot of meds. We almost lost her and it was a heart breaking experience I would not wish on anybody. HealtyPaws was with us through this ordeal all the way, reimbursing hefty medical bills and following up with the hospital staff on the records and documentation. You cannot wish for a better pet insurance company. Compassionate and super helpful. Kate and us will be grateful to you for the rest of our lives. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Healthy paws has been amazing for our dog over the past two years. We got it immediately upon bringing our standard bernedoodle home at 8 week in June of 2014. We have made three claims for Finn over the years. All three (though they varied in amount and type) were paid within just a couple of days, and were a breeze to submit. Our dog is repeat sock eating offender, and when he had to have surgery to remove one, Healthy Paws paid our claim quickly and saved us from having thousands in credit card debt. They even reached out personally to see how Finn was doing, and make sure he was okay. The personal service is spectacular, and their coverage options are great. We're actually bringing... My dog Paxton, this past month, was required to go in for his SECOND back surgery. We were devastated to say the least. If we did not have HealthyPaws to have our back, who knows the financial ruin that we would have endured. With HealthyPaws, we simply snapped a photo in their iPhone app of our invoices and prognosis paperwork and submitted it for claim. Within a week, we received a check back in the amount of 80% of the cost of his surgery (close to 6,000). We can't recommend HealthPaws ENOUGH for what they do the shield pet owners from the insane amount of money some of these medical conditions cost. If you haven't already, or are on the fence about their insurance, don't hesitate... Read More

I highly recommend Healthy Paws. My dog Coco had to have hernia surgery and it was my first claim. Healthy Paws answered all my questions and I can tell they were genuinely concerned for Coco. The people were very friendly and extremely helpful. Their app made it easy to check the status of my claim. Thank you, Healthy Paws for making this a painless process.
