Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I've had healthy paws for the past 4 years. Signed up because my friend who does TONS of research said she was happiest with Healthy Paws. Never filed a claim til this January 2016. My now 5 year old American Staffordshire completely tore his right ACL. My vet said surgery was not a good option because of the early signs of hip dysplasia in both hips and his left knee was not that great too. I was referred to an animal hospital whos surgeon and staff were amazing. The cost of EVERYTHING came out to $5000. Was shocked but it HAD to be done. My furbaby is my child. He went in for surgery as I sat home sad and still shocked about this price tag (shocked because obviously it was... Read More

I wrote a review last month when my beautiful German Shepherd, Carly, had a benign tumor removed from her jaw. Since then, her cancer was reclassified to malignant carcinoma. She's currently going through a series of 16 radiation treatments and will begin chemotherapy once completed. Thank you Healthy Paws for supporting us through this terrible disease. I don't know what we'd do without you.

I can't say enough about healthy paws. I adopted a beautiful, energetic and spunky German shepherd who was only one year old at the time.... Needless to say, she developed a very unexpected medical problem. Healthy paws has allowed me to give the care that my pup deserves, but I could never afford. I always have that negative image of insurance companies who do everything in their power to avoid paying claims. They have never denied, or even questioned a claim I've filed. I am able to have peace of mind knowing that she will never be denied treatment that drastically improved her quality of life. I can't thank health paws enough for everything they have done for me.

HealthyPaws is really an excellent pet insurance company that delivered their promise when my furry friend needed medical treatment. My dog had to go through emergency surgery for foreign body removal 2 weeks ago, between vet clinic and multiple ER visits in making the diagnosis, surgery, hospital stays, I paid over $6K total. After I submitted all the bills and medical notes, I received their emails confirming my reimbursement checks within 2 days (submitted on Sat, got emails on Mon), and all the reimbursement checks arrived on Sat of the same week, healthy paws reimbursed me $5300 in total (I have 90% reimbursement coverage and $100 annual deductible). No questions asked, no extra... Read More

My cat, Oliver was recently diagnoses with a rare autoimmune disease of his bone marrow. The blood transfusion and emergency vet stay, ultrasounds and etc. would have left me in a lot of debt. Luckily, because he had no pre-existing conditions, healthy paws covered 90% of all of his treatments. The payments were extremely fast (checks within 3-4 business and claims settled within 1-2 days), and they never denied coverage. The next month, I thought he had eaten a cat toy, and they covered the ultrasound and treatment then as well (this cat just really likes getting into trouble). I cannot recommend healthy paws enough, the only thing I wish they would cover is the vet consultation fee,... Read More

My French bulldog Polly started showing symptoms of a foreign body in her stomach and a cough suddenly one week before I was going on vacation. She had two X-rays, blood tests, exploratory surgery, countless medications, emergency care as well as hospitalization! Thanks to Healthy Paws I was able to give Polly the treatment and care she needed. Her care cost $1300+ and with a reimbursement of 80% I had piece of mind that she was going to recover fine. Polly's health concerns started on a Thursday and I received my reimbursements on Monday and Tuesday right before my vacation! I cannot say enough words for how thankful I am to have Healthy Paws insurance and would recommend them to anyone... Read More

I'm so impressed with the genuine care Healthy Paws has provided. My 2-year-old pup Khloe underwent surgery for a luxating patella about 4 weeks ago. I recently spoke to a representative inquiring about my pup having to have her other back knee operated on for the same condition which the doctors suggested she have done in another 6 months. I had asked the rep if I should wait till next year to have the other operation, if it would cause an increase in premium, or if it would even be covered. The rep was very kind and ensured that the premium wouldn't raise due to the claim, and encouraged me to go ahead and take care of my pup if she needed the surgery. I wasn't expecting her... Healthy Paws is by far the best pet insurance company out there! The beginning of this year we discovered our 4 year old french bulldog (Louie) had a nasal tumor that was inoperable. Because of his breed and the location of the tumor we were given 2 options of radiation treatment that would shrink the tumor with minimal to no side effects and give Louie the chance to live a pain free life for as long as possible. Only issue was the options were extremely pricey but Louie was only given 2 months to live without any treatment. Thankfully I signed Louie up for Healthy Paws pet insurance when he was a pup so the treatment was covered!! We of course had to pay the bills up front (he was... Read More

My Jack Russell terrier Riley was attacked by a Rottweiler (it wasn't a fair fight) in an RV park in Cottonwood, AZ. We were referred to Tumbleweed Vet Clinic, who were wonderful. Just as wonderful was my experience with Healthy Paws. Everyone was friendly, sympathetic, and very helpful, going out of their way to make sure the trauma over my dog's injuries was not compounded by the usual hassles one experiences with insurance companies. Anyone contemplating buying pet insurance should not hesitate to choose Healthy Paws.
