Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

The best thing I've done is register our puppy for insurance with Healthy Paws. Besides being wonderfully concerned about your family member initially, they follow up with you on how things are going and if they can be of further assistance. Better care than humans medical insurance !!!

I have all six of my pets insured with Healthy Paws. (Two dogs, four cats; I'm a veterinary nurse, so pets happen!) My oldest cat, Keats, recently developed a small mass on the bottom of one of his feet. We removed it at my clinic and sent it to the lab for analysis. When the pathology report came back recommending an oncology consult, I knew that soon I would be submitting my first claim to Healthy Paws. The following day he saw the oncologist, and then had a second surgery at the specialty clinic. The bill was $3,237. Within a day of submitting my claim, Healthy Paws issued a reimbursement check for $2,874! The process could not have been simpler and the people at Healthy Paws... Read More

I bought this insurance for my two dogs, one who was older, in case something were to happen. Unfortunately, my older dog passed away before the 15-day waiting period was up, but because of their 30-day money back guarantee, I was able to get a refund of the first policy payment while keeping the lower rate for my other dog (they do multi-pet discounts). Soon after, I received a sympathy card signed by the employees. They didn't even know my dog, but they showed me that they truly cared. A few months later, my other dog had to be rushed to the emergency room for paraphimosis. Since he is a neutered adult, it's a rare case. He recently had to go for extensive tests to figure out what is... Read More

If you have a fury family member, you need to have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! Our fur babies are a part of our family and Healthy Paws allows us to provide the care they need and deserve without the worry of expensive vet bills. My baby, Rocky, recently had to have TPLO surgery and getting reimbursed for this surgery was quick and painless. They even sent a personal email asking how his recovery was going! Healthy Paws customer service is top notch and that really means something today, where good customer service is hard to find and robotic. I recommend Healthy Paws to all of my family and friends, and you won't regret having them on your side either. Thank you, Healthy Paws, for... Read More

I would like to tell you how pleased I am with Healthy Paws. This is the first time using Phillip's coverage. A customer service representative offered to phone both his regular veterinarian and the specialist hospital for his medical records. I mailed off his receipts on a Monday, and all were processed by Friday. Unbelievable! The checks arrived a few days later. I can certainly see why Healthy Paws is rated tops in customer satisfaction.

My German Shepherd was diagnosed with oral ameloblastoma five weeks ago. Last week she underwent surgery to remove the tumor and part of her jaw. This company is the real thing. They have paid all my claims without delay. I can focus on my dogs recovery instead of worrying about all the vet bills associated with this terrible disease. This was the best decision I could have made to protect my beloved Carly.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has made my dog's health care stress free. Since I adopted her she has had cancer and kidney issues. These are very expensive treatments, but with the top notch care from Healthy Paws I don't have to worry about ensuring she gets the best care! They quickly process claims and reach out personally to see how my boxer is doing. And I'm happy to report that as a result of receiving the best medical care that is offered, she is loving life and enjoying every minute regardless if it's a hike, playing with her friends at day care, or cuddling on the couch.

I was told to get pet insurance for my rescue dog, I have had seven dogs in my lifetime, and I have never considered having “pet insurance”… why, they’re dogs! They are resilient, loving, caring, and most of all indestructible!! Well, Oscar was a young dog, maybe a year or so old, when we rescued him, but my wife told me to research pet insurance. I knew my wife was smart; I just didn’t realized how smart she really is. We had Oscar for 10 months; he seemed healthy, running, playing, and full of energy, nothing to worry about right? Wrong, about three weeks ago, Oscar started to become lethargic, not eating as much and not full of his normal energy, so we took him to the Vet, the vet said... Read More

I was never a believer in "Pet Insurance". I was always rather skeptical about how it would really be effective, seeing that animals have a short life span and maybe a couple times to see the vet for emergencies would be financially manageable. Well, I'm now a believer. I decided on a whim to get my youngest dog HealthyPaws insurance last year, since he was healthy and it would not be that pricey. So, $30 a month...I can do that. I thought my older dog might not be so easy, and insurance would probably not be so reasonable. I decided on March 2nd, to see how much it would be to add her. Being that she's over 10 years old, it was $50 a month. Okay, that was reasonable. Fast forward 40 days... Read More
