Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I would give this company 10 stars if possible!. After being with a pet insurance company that had lengthy, complicated claim forms that it always seemed to find mistakes on which only added onto the eternity it took to process the claim, receive the refund and onto the angst of finally receiving that pittance of a claim check, with Healthypaws, I'm in Heaven! The staff is very professional and kind, they tell you the information upfront and there are no hassles in processing claims. The speed with which they complete the process is phenomenal. I also like that they have different coverage levels such as 90% or 80% that I could choose to best affect my premium. My cats Tiny Tino and... Read More

I got my new kitten, Thyme, about a month ago, and I debated whether I needed pet insurance. I thought he's young and not very likely to get sick, but I decided I had better get it because you never know what could happen. I research several different pet insurance companies. I combed through reviews and compared prices and benefits before deciding on Healthy Paws. They had great reviews and coverage compared to other companies, and from the reviews they seemed to really care about the pets. Three weeks later I got a new couch and Thyme found out he could jump to the mantle from the back of the couch. I had made a note to figure out a different arrangement in the living room to keep him... Read More

Dancer, our Labrador Retriever nearly lost her life from eating sugar free gum. She suffered fextreme Xylitol poisoning. It was such a stressful time for us, not knowing if she would make it. What a relief it was to know that she had pet insurance to help cover the rising bills. Healthy Paws were extremely easy to work with, and extremely fast at issuing a reimbursement check. They even followed up to check on Dancer. So glad we went with Healthy Paws for our pets!!

We are happy clients of HealthyPaws for less than a year. Our corgi mix dog has had some difficult times during this period: allergy, skin infection and finally unexpected surgery. All needed exams and operations were fully covered as well as all the medications. After the X-ray doctor though our pup has eaten a bone or a plastic toy but during the surgery it turned out that the dog had had narrowed intestines' segment that had to be deleted. 4 days later Yuki had the second surgery. All this time we could hardly sleep or think about anything but our poor doggy. HealthyPaws has not only paid all the bills but also called me to know how Yuki was doing, following with couple of _personally... Read More

I switched my pet's insurance to Healthy Paws two years ago after reading the stellar reviews and being frustrated and really angry with my former insurance which shall go unnamed. I have been nothing but thrilled at their customer service, policies, and the overall care they take with their job. Reasonable rates, fast service, and really nice people. They seem to really care about you and your pet. It did take a little while to get set up, as they need all your records at the beginning (since my dog was over 5 and had a history, it took a while to get everything), but once the policy was set up, it's easy and I've had no problems at all. Takes literally one minute to file a claim as you... Read More

I had know idea how pet health insurance worked until we got our 8 week old Aussie in Nov. of 2015. After some research I chose Healthy Paws, and could not be happier. Milo got into some raisins. This can be very bad for a young dogs kidneys, so we took him to the Vet, and $780 dollars latter, Milo is fine… Healthy Paws sent a check in a few days for 80% - less deductable- which is annual, so once it is met for the year you are good on that. Very easy claim process, all on iPhone App! So few companies do what they say, Healthy Paws did, and even followed up to see how Milo was doing.

We got a healthy paws policy for our healthy puppy when we brought her home from the breeder at 12 weeks. In the ensuing 18 months she has developed multiple severe medical conditions requiring very expensive diagnostics and therapeutics. Healthy Paws has covered it all, with sensitivity and alacrity. Her maintenance medications, totalling over $200 a month, covered. Surgeries and labs, covered. Healthy Paws is literally a lifesaver for us. They have paid out well over $10K in the past year and they even follow up with emails to check on how she's doing. One of the best things about healthy paws is the convenience. Their mobile app is super easy to use, and always results in very... Read More

Our 11 month old cairnoodle ate something at the dog park and got very ill. After 24 hours if emergency care he is totally well. Healthy Paws was fabulous. The processed our claim very quickly and the check was there in less than a week. What a wonderful experience in a difficult time.

In the past year each of our little dogs has had a serious illness. thankfully we have Healthy Paws and they have been fabulous. In addition to paying our claims try promptly, they have been supportive and concerned on a personal level. We would recommend Healthy Paws to any loving pet parent.

My dog Charlie is a dachshund and one day I came home to him paralyzed and unable to move his back legs. He apparently had a slipped disc on his back and it was squeezing on his spine. He needed immediate surgery. This is where Healthy Paws stepped in and covered 90% of the charges. While we would have still paid for Charlie's surgery regardless, at least the full amount will not be on our credit card accruing a large amount of interest over a long period of time. It has surely helped us to keep our focus on Charlie's recovery and not worry on how we would be able to pay back the cost of his surgery. I definitely thank Healthy Paws for their services during this time. We love our... Read More
