Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Having a good pet insurance is worth the investment for your pet. All the costs of Emergency room visit, IV fluids, x-rays, medications, hospital care, surgery add up very quickly. I appreciate Healthy Paws pet insurance for reviewing the claims in a timely manner and sending the reimbursement check so quickly.

Healthy Paws has been an essential component of our healthcare. The puppy we adopted in 2018 has had multiple health problems and Healthy Paws has responded quickly and with care. It was the best thing we could have done for our pet.

I have my dog on this insurance for about four years now. I’ve filed numerous claims. And have not received a single penny back. They keep telling me that I am missing documents but I uploaded everything I got from my vet. Medical records, itemized vet visits with date, procedures done, and invoice amount, as well as each invoice. But they still claim I am missing something. They even got all the paperwork from my vet directly. And when I went to upload documents to each claim i filed, it wouldn’t let me. So I filed again as the first claim wasn’t going through and was denied until i produce documents. I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT ELSE I NEED TO POST. i feel like i am getting the run around. I am... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
We truly appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family over the years and sorry for your frustration during the processing of your claims. As per the policy we do require medical records for all enrolled pets in order to process claims. Once full records are received (typically we ask for them when you file your first few claims) we will keep them on file for future claims processing and you will never have to submit full records again. In the future, if we do need clarification for a specific claim, we may simply request the date of service exam notes for that visit. We appreciate your efforts in providing those records to us, but are still missing some vital information. Our customer care team has sent an email detailing what is still needed. They have reached out on your behalf to get the necessary records. Once received we can continue to process your claims.

We can't say enough about Health Paws! Thank you so much for helping us with our Macie Grace. It was a very scary time and we were really worried me might lose her. My wife and I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you at Health Paws. It was extremely stressful and sad going through such a tough time but the one thing we didn't have to worry about is if we could pay for her treatment. Thanks to you all, we felt supported and comforted by the protection you provided us :) And on top of it all, you reached out to see how she is doing. Wonderful!! Everyone we speak with that has your coverage raves about you!! We can certainly see why!! :) Thank you again for all... Read More

We've had our pup covered for 11 years and Healthy Paws has always been thorough in their coverage and prompt in their reimbursement. The claims process is easy. Their willingness to cover cancer care has allowed us 2+ extra years with our girl.

Healthy Paws Insurance is great, everything is so easy to use, very fast to submit claims, and fast turnaround and payment of claims. In addition they have excellent and caring customer service. Every time we have submitted a claim for an emergency event, they have reached out asking about the welfare of our pet, it’s just a very kind gesture.

Healthy Paws has been extremely helpful in making sure our dog, Leeloo, has received the best medical care available. Working with them has been great, and the ease of filing a claim with them is unmatched. Unfortunately, Leeloo recently incurred an injury that required several visits to the vet, medication, x-rays, and surgery. Healthy Paws was there to process our claims quickly and follow up with us to check on Leeloo. Having them in our corner has really helped with the financial hardship and stress, which has allowed us to focus on loving Leeloo during her recovery. Lots of puppy hugs and snuggles.

I have trusted Healthy Paws with my pet insurance since I first got my sole dog, Daisy. Pet insurance was a must as a college student with a dog, as funds were tight and my dog has a medical record like a CVS receipt (unreasonably long). Healthy Paws was affordable and always provided quick review, response, and payment of my claims and when living paycheck to paycheck it was a necessity so I could give my dog the care she deserved. Fast forward to this year, Daisy was diagnosed with Cancer and had to have an expensive surgery. Healthy Paws, as usual, provides quick and excellent service during my claims and then personally reaches out to check in on Daisy’s recovery. She is doing... Read More

Healthy Paws was affordable for a few years. We started our pets policy in 2017 for $33 per month. We saw gradual increases at first, then 30% increase, then 50% increase, and this year our policy jumped from $133 per month to $255 per month. We’ve never filed a claim, so we queried Healthy Paws. They informed us premium increases were beyond their control and set by our states insurance regulator (verified this is false). Ultimately, as your pet ages and your likelihood of filing a claim increases, Healthy Paws will no longer want to insure you, so get ready for astronomical increases. A shady business model at best, for old pets

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
We appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family since 2017. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase. Your premium increase is influenced by two primary factors, the increased age of your pet, and the cost of veterinary care services reflected in the claims paid in your specific state. Your premiums have gone up because total claim payments to pet parents, among other things, have increased faster than premiums paid by all pet parents in your state. As a result, the premiums for insurance for all pets in your state needs to be increased so that your insurer can continue to provide this type of insurance. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed with, and approved by, each state’s insurance regulator, which reflect the cost of treatment advances in veterinary medicine, and characteristics of the individual pet, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region where the pet resides. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website.
