Extras

Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

patriciarogers038 - We appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family and understand no one likes any form of premium increase. From your review we also know you haven't had to file any claims and we hope you never have to--this means your pet is healthy and accident free. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed and approved within each state’s Department of Insurance. These reflect the cost of treatment, advances in veterinary medicine (including specialty care), your individual pet’s breed, gender, age and other factors, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region your pet resides. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of specialty and emergency care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. Give your pup a big hug from us.

Hello, I am looking to insure my Golden Retriever, Murphy, who will be 4 yrs old Sunday, April 18th. I currently have insurance, but want to change companies. Murphy has allergies, and is on Apoquel when needed. Would you cover that medication for him, as it,s preexisting? I like that you pay the per cent age of the Actual bill, and not what is aloud, is that correct? What about preventative flea, tick, and heart worm monthly meds, and annual injections, do you cover those? Can you send me that info and a rate for Murphy, 90% , $100. Deductible. Thank you .....Connie Rosensteel

Healthy Paws recently covered my dog's leg surgery. They were quick with response time and the claim went from submission to benefits declaration within about a week, including the Easter Holiday. I've been impressed with their customer service and the ease of website navigation. Their monthly premium is also very reasonable compared to other pet insurance companies out there.

I switched to Healthy Paws after talking to a co-worker about the problems I was having with my previous pet insurance company. Best decision I ever made. Healthy Paws is amazing and so easy. I have submitted my claims and gotten a check within a week. I could not be happier with Healthy Paws. They even sent me an email checking in on my pet after she had surgery. I 100% recommend Healthy Paws to all pet owners.

I have been pleasantly surprised. I was skeptical about taking out dog insurance. Our dog had TPLO surgery and developed tendonitis afterward. They paid 80% of surgery and PT for the tendonitis, after deductible, per the plan we chose. They have been transparent about not covering pre existing bladder issues. Customer service, good. Claims processed in 3 or 4 days. Quick reimbursement. I have been recommending the company to fellow pet owners.

In a nutshell: having insurance saved my dog's life. My girl, Ceniza was diagnosed with TCC in April 2019. Without treatment, we were given a 3-6 month prognosis. With treatment, 12-24 months. Having insurance meant that we were able to say yes to whatever treatment she needed. She is still here 2 years later and is showing ZERO signs of slowing down. The tumor has been growing but at a very, very slow rate. This is no doubt due to the chemotherapy treatments. Her Dr is thrilled with her progress, as she has never had a patient continue this long on chemo. This is likely due to most parents not being able to afford long term treatment. I have probably submitted over $40k in claims... Read More

Healthy paws has been the absolute best! While I maintained my policy for many years without making any claims, Healthy Paws has been there when they were most needed. This year my beloved 14 year old dog developed liver cancer. Healthy Paws has covered absolutely everything from tumor removal surgery to specialized genomic cancer testing to chemotherapy and ongoing monitoring. My little guy is still with and doing fine because of the fantastic care I was able to procure with my Healthy Paws coverage. So so thankful for the peace of mind.

I would highly recommend HealthyPaws Pet Insurance to any pet owner. When my very active 9 year old fur baby become unexpectedly lame in his hind quarters on 3/1, we brought him to our vet. He was treating Harley for sever arthritis, using pain medicine, an anti-inflammatory and Adequan Shots twice a week. When we and our vet saw no improvement we made an appointment for a neurologist and MRI. On 3/18 Harley had surgery to remove discs pressing on his spine and spent 3 days in the hospital. If you are a concerned pet owner and go to the vet for treatment for your pet your know the fees are so high you have to remortgage your house. Thank goodness I had Healthy Paws Insurance to cover... After losing my two dogs within 5 months of each other I often wondered what more I could have done for them with the financial ability to do so. When I got a new puppy and she had a tendency to put everything she saw in her mouth I thought I would make an investment and get insurance. After looking at many different companies and plans I went with Healthy Paws. The ability for me to choose my payback percentage and deductible and customize my plan was a huge draw. The phone app is a godsend. The moment I get an invoice I just take a photo on the app and let it get processed! Unfortunately at just two years old my little girl was diagnosed with a pretty bad autoimmune disease. heathy paws... Read More

BEWARE OF HEALTHY PAWS I have had Healthy Paws for a year now and I'm currently searching for another pet insurance company. I'm shocked no one has complained about them because they have treated my pet horribly. First off, when I first spoke to them on the phone a year ago about insuring my small 3 year old mix dog, they said they cover exam fees if the exam is diagnostic and leads to treatment. They also told me they need proof that she is healthy with no preexisting condition. My dog hadn't seen a vet in over a year so I decided to pay $70 to have a vet perform a nose to tail examination, He wrote them a letter and sent in his documents stating she was in perfect health.... Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Gerri, We're sorry that your baby injured her paw. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. Your policy documents and our website outline the need for medical records. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. We use a pet's medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Anyone visiting our website can see information regarding policy exclusions and medical record requirements on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” or "Frequently Asked Questions" page. Give your girl a big hug from us.
