Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My pup is 7 months old and met the 15 day waiting period. 7 days later she went into liver failure. She spent 5 days in ICU. I thought for sure no way will Healthy Paws cover this. Well thank the stars I was wrong. We paid our 250 deductible and got back over 4000.00 dollars all totaled it cost approximately 800 out of pocket. They did not make any excuses. They looked at medical records 2 vets. Then paid the claims. My pup will need follow up blood work to continue treatments but I have no worries. I have my other dog on Embrace and they are good too but I give Healthy Paws a great big five stars. Do not think twice this place rocks.

I am pleased with everything Healthy Paws has done for my two boys. Thank goodness my boys are healthy and we haven’t need to make many claims. I believe the claims totaled less than $500.00 for last year for my two boys. I have had Healthy Paws for 8 years but now, I GET AN INCREASE OF AN ADDITIONAL $50.00 MONTHLY, which equates to a 32.5% INCREASE. I was told that due the increase of claims in my are the UNDERWRITERS feel it is necessary. Come On Healthy Paws, do you think that people are stupid. Call it like it is, you all want to make more profit. I have gotten an increase in premium every year since we have had the policy and nothing this dramatic. Please tell the public about the... Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
jeffrey.h442@gmail.com - We truly appreciate that you have been a valuable member of the Healthy Paws Family for the past eight years and that we have been able to play a part in making sure your babies have had access to the best available medical care. We understand no one likes any form of premium increase and that this increase was larger than usual. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Premiums are determined based on the rates and rating rules filed and approved within each state’s Department of Insurance. These reflect the cost of treatment, advances in veterinary medicine, your individual pet’s breed, gender, age and other factors, in addition to the overall claims experience for the program within the region your pet resides. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. Give your babies big hugs for us.

I got Healthypaws after my poor cat racked up a $7000 emergency vet bill. Going through the experience was difficult enough, but to get walloped with such a big bill at the end of it was really a gut punch. I swore I wouldn’t put myself through that again, so I started comparing insurance companies. I landed with Healthypaws, and I have been REALLY pleased with them. Now when there is any health concern (and there seems to be plenty), I don’t have to worry as much about his bill on top of worrying about his health. When you are stressed about your furbaby’s medical situation, it’s some solace to have options that might otherwise be out of reach financially. Healthypaws has never... Read More

My 4 lb 1 oz. 14 month yr. old yorkie named Ivy started throwing up and after 1 1/2 days of it and her totally not acting like herself I called her vet. and they had me bring her in right away. Not knowing whether she had eaten something she shouldn't have or somehow got poisoned they took x-rays and ran blood tests. It turned out the Ivy was dehydrated and had gastroenteritis. The vet. wanted to put an IV in her and keep her overnight to watch her closely. When I was told how much it was going to cost I cried. It was $1,829.00 that first day. The vets office was very considerate and submitted the claim to Healthy Paws. I can not say enough good things about Healthy Paws.... Read More

Healthy Paws is an amazing company to work with and seems to really care about your pets! We just experienced our black Lab having to have leg surgery (plate & screws) and it was the easiest fastest process to get reimbursed with their online system! We had another Pet Insurance company before Healthy Paws and all I can say is you won't be sorry going with Healthy Paws!!

After having a very bad experience with another pet insurance company, I was very skeptical of signing up for another pet insurance service after we got our pet Maddie. Thankfully I listened to my sister in law who sang the praises of healthypaws and how much they helped her out with a really difficult situation with her pet. I say this because we have had a number of health issues going on with our girl Maddie and Healthypaws has had our back every step of the way. I never go out of my way to write reviews for ANYTHING but had to do so for healthypaws because of how much they have assisted my wife and I with our dog. We are not rich people but we knew that Maddie is family to us... Read More

Greg - Although we are sorry to hear about your previous bad experiences with pet insurance companies we are VERY happy to hear that Healthy Paws has exceeded your expectations every step of the way! Having a sick pet is stressful enough, and no pet parent should ever have to worry about whether or not they can afford the potentially life-saving procedure their veterinarian is recommending. Having Healthy Paws means pet parents can make decisions based on what's best for their pets, rather than having to pass on treatment for their pet because they cannot afford it. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and for all the kind words. Please give Maddie another big hug from us!

After learning the hard way how expensive veterinary care can become, especially with senior pets (our Pomeranian was diagnosed with bladder cancer, and my German Shepherd accumulated well over $50k in vet bills during his life, most of which were in the last 4 or 5 years), we knew we'd get pet insurance with our next dogs. And after comparing options, Healthy Paws came out on top. So far, they've definitely lived up to their reputation! Several of our dogs have needed emergency care or major surgery since opening their policies, and Healthy Paws has covered every claim - and quickly, too! It's given us so much peace of mind knowing that we can say, "Do whatever needs to be done"... Read More
