Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

After losing several dogs in the past where money, along with age, was a factor, we decided all our future dogs would have insurance. We chose healthypaws after extensive research and have nothing but great things to say about this company. Our German Shepherd was diagnosed with an immune disorder at 7 months old. Since then (he's 2 now) he has been at the vet on an almost monthly basis. He's had countless blood tests, and other tests such as cat scans, biopsies and cultures. He's also been on and off multiple medications for over a year. Healthypaws has never once questioned a doctor or treatment. This is a lifelong illness for him and we are confident we can care for him with... Read More

My 5 star rating is NOT exaggerated by any means. Quick story, we always adopt rescues and our second developed cancer 6 months after we had adopted her. Treatment was well into the $3K range, which we paid, but it was so advanced and not caught in time that she passed from it. We were able to spend 9 precious months with our beloved Angel (actual name, she was a LARGE White wooly Siberian). We got pet insurance after that for our others just to be safe and thankfully we did. Our other rescue was diagnosed with cancer and a very expensive surgery to correct it ~$6k, luckily we had Healthypaws. Thanks to them we were able to spend more years with my pup Bexley. Their process for... Read More

This isn’t my first review of Healthy Paws, but I just can’t say enough about the company. My 4 ½ year old Goldendoodle, Sailor, was recently hospitalized overnight for an intestinal problem, and we had to return to the ER Clinic the next night, and follow up with a visit to her regular veterinarian two days later. She had multiple x-rays, a catheter, sedation, and numerous medications, etc. and the total of all bills was approximately $ 3000. Healthy Paws processed my claims within 3 days and direct deposited my reimbursement immediately. They e-mailed me every step of the way, letting me know the progress of the claims, when they had completed processing the claims, and a final... Read More

Kim - Thank you so much for all the kind words and for continuing to write positive reviews about Healthy Paws. It's people like you who are helping to raise awareness about the importance of having pet insurance for our furry friends. Pets are expensive and sick or injured pets can be very very expensive and Healthy Paws believes that no pet parent should ever have to decide between giving their pets the best medical care possible or not. We are sorry to hear about Sailor's recent major tummy issues and hospitalization. Hopefully, she is back at home and feeling much better now. Please give Sailor another big hug from us!

Healthypaws has saved my dog and I! My dog, Haddie, has unfortunately developed severe skin allergies, thyroid issues, and potential kidney issues. Healthypaws was there to support me through multiple cycles of antibiotics, shots, blood tests, anti-fungal medications, food changes, etc. Healthypaws is truly top notch!

Healthy Paws has been nothing but the best for me and my dog, Emmett. I sing their praises whenever someone asks me about pet insurance. In December of 2019, Emmett had to get multiple MRIs and x-rays done and was diagnosed with multiple bulging discs causing nerve issues. Healthy Paws covered all the diagnostics and his new medications with no complications — and completed the claim before Christmas . Then a week later due to side effects of prednisone (body thinks it's starving) he ate a rope toy for the first time in his life (he's 8 years old.) Healthy Paws covered the ER visit with no hassle.

packtwin - We are sorry to hear about Emmett's recent back and foreign object issues. Poor guy. As pet parents ourselves we understand just how stressful it is when one of our furbabies is not feeling well. Luckily having Healthy Paws pet insurance means you can always give your pet the very best medical care available when they need it most. Thank you for the kind words regarding your Healthy Paws experience. Please give Emmett more hugs from us!

My partner and I are animal photographers and photograph countless dogs. After the death of our Beagle last year, I decided to insure our other three dogs so I would never again have to weigh the financial impact of an illness or injury. I talked to many pet owners and always heard excellent things about Healthy Paws. They focus on the expenses I felt were important - the unexpected. They don't cover preventative care, but as a pet owner, that's something you plan for anyway. Soon after insuring our pet family, our puppy Tilda broke her leg. The experience was very traumatic, but I felt comfort knowing we were insured and that I could focus on what was best for her, knowing the... Read More

Over the past six years with HealthyPaws, I have nothing but pleasant experiences. Easy access to the claim process page on its website, and timely completion reply and reimbursement. They cover my two labradors. The most recent claim made for my dog, who had her femur head & neck 0stectomy, was handled and reimbursement made promptly. Very impressive. But most impressed by the follow-up email from them concerning my dog's recovery and the fast recovery. Now, do I ever hear that from my health insurance company??? They care and show their concerns more so than insurance companies for us humans. I am quite satisfied with Healthy Paws. Victor F,

I started policies on our four rescued Galgos a year ago. I was starting to wonder if we really needed the coverage; my dogs were young. What were the chances of me making a claim that would cover the monthly premiums? Then my 5 year old, Paquita, started exhibiting symptoms which were of concern to my regular vet who referred us to a specialist. It was Thanksgiving. I was unable to get an appointment so I had her admitted as an emergency. I didn't stop to check my Healthy Paws policy/coverage. I simply wanted the best care available immediately. A month later, after the initial scare and a promising prognosis, the credit card bills were due. I logged into the app expecting a long,... Read More

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws insurance. We insured our mini dachshund, Abby, who didn't have as much as a sniffle in 12 years, then, the issues started, and for 2 months we tried everything to save our girl, and spent a LOT of money. Healthy Paws came through for us, paid what they said they would, quickly and with no questions asked. Wonderful company to deal with.
