Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

healthypaws has been nothing short of wonderful for us and our pet. The coverage is clear and not confusing, so we are able to safely estimate how much we'll get reimbursed for. The reimbursement itself is very quick and easy as a customer. The monthly charges do go up on an annual basis, but not in a way that seems out of line with the extra risk they take on with an aging pet. We'll be sure to use healthypaws in the future and for our next pet.

I took out pet insurance on a whim, never thinking or hoping I would actually need it. I have never had pet insurance, but from past experience I know how emergency services can add up, so after much research, I chose Healthy Paws. Unfortunately my sweet Baxter developed some problems and I cannot express how great it’s been to have Healthy Paws. The decisions I’ve had to make were easy because I knew I could actually afford to give him the best health care for a longer life and Healthy Paws has made that possible.

I was hesitant to purchase pet insurance - it seemed expensive and unnecessary. Then my dog had an emergency vet visit and I quickly realized the value! I researched and compared brands and finally decided on Healthy Paws because it seemed like the best fit for what I was looking for. We have had this insurance for over 3 years and our 4 year old Golden Retriever has already used it several times. I am not normally a review person…but sometimes a company goes above and beyond even my expectations and I feel they need to be recognized as such. My last dog had a lot of health issues and 13 years ago dog insurance was not talked about much. This past year I got a new puppy and decided from the get go to get insurance on her. I did my research and Healthy Paws came out on top across the board so I signed her up. It was the BEST decision I have ever made. The hope of pet insurance is that you never have to use it. I have been a customer with Healthy Paws for two years before actually needing them! Unfortunately, life happens. Our cat ripped all ligaments in his knee and needed an immediate amputation. Pet care sometimes puts the owner in an impossible position. The expense toll it can take is incredible but having Healthy Paws backing me up made the choice easy. Once I submitted the paperwork via their easy to use app, it only took a week for the checks to arrive at my house. They covered 80% of the incredibly expensive surgery. We've been very happy with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. We're new to having pet insurance and were reluctant to purchase it, but with 3 dogs it seemed necessary. Healthy Paws is easy to work with, they do just what they say (!) and they are very prompt in paying claims. I especially appreciate how easy they make it to check everything online.....payments, progress of claims etc. I highly recommend Healthy Paws.

We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance since 2014 without incident. Recently, our Daisy had a TPLO injury and the customer service reps at Healthy Paws couldn't have been more helpful. They walked me through the whole claim process and we were reimbursed for the surgery within one week. They also sent us a Get Well wishes for Daisy for a speedy recovery. That was so sweet! I highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for all your pet insurance. They are fantastic

We have all three of our dogs insured with HealthyPaws but only one of them has been sick where we had to use the insurance. I can't praise HealthyPaws enough for the support that they've given as we've had to take our dog to the University several times for high fevers and pain that none of the local vets could determine the cause or the right treatment. To be able to focus on our dog's health and get the help she needed without worry about the bill was amazing and gave us such peace as our dog is a special part of our family and the peace of mind was worth her weight in gold. My claims have been processed very quickly and the prompt follow ups from a representative have exceeded my expectations. I was told I would be reimbursed at a 100% level less the deductible. Your representatives lied, no other way around it. I've been told by HP that they only offer 80% reimbursement. I will be shopping around for a more reputable company to do business with.

We’re sorry if there was a misunderstanding regarding your policy coverage. Since Healthy Paws inception in 2010, the maximum reimbursement level offered has always been 90% (depending on breed, pet age and state of residence). This information is available on our website, in our printed materials and during the online enrollment process. When you enroll online, one of the steps a client has to take is choosing the deductible and reimbursement level for their policy and in your case, you chose the 80% reimbursement level. Also, once you enroll with us, we provide you within your online Healthy Paws account a Policy Declaration page that outlines your chosen deductible/reimbursement level for each pet enrolled. We're sorry that your babies were ill and hope they do well in their recoveries.
