Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We’ve been beyond impressed with Healthy Paws. After reviewing all pet insurance options, it was clear to us that this is the absolute best. Many people tried to talk me out of pet insurance when I adopted my dog. I was told it was a scam, that they didn't cover anything, and that as my dog aged, the premium would skyrocket. However, a few good friends told me about Healthy Paws and said they had wonderful experiences with them. After doing my research (including a rather lengthy call grilling a Healthy Paws rep on what they do/do not cover) I took the leap. I figured paying $45/mo would be like a savings plan for that inevitable day I needed a 5k procedure. I hoped that day would be many years off. My dog is thankfully healthy but recently had a accident that required a pretty serious surgery. He is family so we would have done whatever it takes to get him well but without Healthy Paws the financial burden would have been great. His insurance plan is worth every penny! They processed the claim without delay. We received reimbursement less than 2 weeks after his surgery AND they checked in to see how his recovery is going. Wonderful customer service, I wish human health insurance worked this great! I am thankful I chose Healthy Paws!

We are very grateful for how fast Healthy Paws has been with reimbursing the costs of our dogs treatment and ongoing medication for a condition I had never even imagined as a possibility. Epilepsy/seizures was such a scary and unexpected diagnosis for us but finding great medical care and having pet insurance has made a huge difference in working to manage his care and ease our fears over this diagnosis.

This company is excellent. They processed our claim quickly and even followed up to find out how our dog was doing. The claim was for surgery and was over $5,000. They were clear, patient and helpful during a very stressful time.

My cat ate a sewing needle and had to have surgery on her intestines to remove the needle. I submitted my claims to healthy paws, which was reviewed within a couple days and I recieved the money in my bank account about a week later via direct deposit. The healthy paws customer service people even was able to request my vet records from my vet directly. I interacted with the customer service team at Healthy Paws twice during this expierence and was very pleased with how everyone was so helpful and thoughtful during this scary time. As an Iraqi vet my cat O'Reilly is my battle buddy in transitioning to civilian life. He has saved me and Healthy Paws allowed me to save him. After conducting research into pet insurance carriers I found Healthy Paws to be superlative. They have certainly demonstrated to be. Claims were filed over the phone app and were approved within 2 days of submission. Healthy Paws has delivered time in and time again not only through O'Reilly's urinary issues but when I became concerned he may have ingested a foreign body. My Bandit had to have TPLO knee surgery. It was a “routine” surgery however very costly! It was so comforting to have peace of mind knowing that the surgery was covered and my portion would be affordable. The claims process was quick. I received reimbursement for the preliminary expenses (diagnosis and initial visit with the surgeon) before he even had surgery. They even approved to pay the specialist directly so I didn’t have to worry about coming up with the money and being reimbursed. I’m so thankful for their team. I wish my health insurance were as good as my cats' insurance. When my cat got cancer, they were compassionate and comforting, processed my claims and reimbursement super-fast, and basically took away all the financial stress of dealing with a family member with a potentially terminal illness. Every time I've interacted with them, they've been professional and deeply kind, and really seemed to be rooting for my kitty. Plus, now they will actually do direct pay to the vet rather than having you submit claims and get reimbursed, so if money is tight, you have an option that doesn't require you to come up with thousands of dollars for surgery.
