Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

signed up for Healthy Paws almost 3.5 yrs ago when. my beloved was just 12-weeks old. Have not used much but last week, it was absolutely necessary for oral surgery. So grateful and the claims process was seamless and allowed me to focus on her recuperation. My payment was deposited within 24-hours. The phone support is also stellar. Thank you!

Have had them for ~7 years now. I did a ton of research beforehand and HealthyPaws were (and still are) the best out there and my vets agree. I still give verbal recommendations anytime anyone needs insurance. They are always quick to process claims, upfront in what is covered (and that's almost everything except Vet Exams) and they follow up after payment to ensure everything is well with you and your pet. It's the little touches like this that make them exceptional. I know it's a business, but it doesn't feel like it's always "just business" with HealthyPaws.

The past year has been a difficult one for my 9-year-old cat, Sam. He spent time at his vet getting tests, in emergency and oncology hospitals, had thyroid cancer treatment, a biopsy of his duodenum, and then emergency abdominal surgery. Needless to say, this has all been a huge expense, and through it all, Healthy Paws has come through with fast, hassle-free reimbursements, enabling us to get Sam the treatment that he needed. If we had not had insurance with Healthy Paws, we would not have been able to afford to get Sam the treatments that he has needed. I highly recommend Healthy Paws, and I'm looking forward to a healthy year with my sweet Sam, knowing that if he needs medical help,... Read More

For 9 years my dog Eli was insured with Healthy Paws and for the years he was alive he had major health problems. Each and every claim I submitted it was handled quickly and without questions or delays. Eli has since passed away and we have two rescue dogs. I was not going to let them not be insured and of course I went with Healthy Paws. The first claim that I submitted I received an email that they needed more information. I explained that they had everything and they stated they needed their records from when they were puppies. Long story short it took over two months to get that claim handled. Later one of my dogs had an abscess and even the doctor said he could not say what caused it... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
trstephens1952 - We appreciate your kind words. As per the policy we do require full medical records for all enrolled pets in order to process claims. Once full records are received (typically we ask for them when you file your first few claims) we will keep them on file for future claims processing and you will never have to submit full records again. In the future, if we do need clarification for a specific claim, we may simply request the date of service exam notes for that visit. We're never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. The Healthy Paws plan provides coverage for dental care related to traumatic injury, such as chipping a tooth. When there is damage to the mouth from an outside source, it can cover the cost of extraction or reconstruction of damaged teeth. Dental cleaning or extractions related to dental decay are excluded from coverage. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Since your veterinarian had noted dental disease in your pet's medical records, we could not provide coverage for the claim. We're sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope you and your pets stay well

We signed up for Healthy Paws the day we adopted our 2-year-old rescue Aussie Shepard mix and we are SO GRATEFUL we did! Turns out our pup has epilepsy so we have been to see three general vets, an emergency vet, and a neurologist, which as you can imagine adds up. Not to mention daily medicines, prescription diet, and lifestyle changes needed to manage our dog's seizures. Healthy Paws has been incredibly responsive to all questions about claims and we receive the reimbursement within a couple of days. It's been tough navigating our dog's medicine, doctor appointments, tests, and emergency needs. We are thankful that Healthy Paws is easy to navigate with a great policy and... Read More

It does not cover anything, it is a scam , have for a couple of years , a few emergency visits , but it would not cover anything , your pet would have to be close to dying for you to use it.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
santiagobella - We’re sorry that you were not satisfied with your plan. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the plan documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our plan. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. The Healthy Paws pet insurance plan covers a pet from head to paw. The health insurance plan pays on your actual veterinary bill and covers new injuries and illnesses, emergencies, genetic conditions and much more. If a pet needs treatment for a new accident or illness (except pre-existing conditions), they're covered.

We have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for both of our dogs since they were puppies and we couldn't be more satisfied with the customer service, fairness and reliability of coverage and ease of claim filing. Our older dog has just had his second major surgery for torn ACLs. Watching your dog - and your savings account! - suffer is agony. Healthy Paws made the process easier by providing quick claims submission through their app and reimbursement by direct deposit into my bank account. I have never had to contact Healthy Paws to inquire about the status of a claim or appeal a denial. The process has always been smooth, quick and transparent. I could not recommend this company more... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is wonderful. My puppy, Kali, work up one morning and was having difficulty opening her one eye. Over the course of 1-2 days, she was no longer able to open her eye. I knew something was seriously wrong and I wanted to see a Vet Ophthalmologist (since she was only 14 months old). Having Healthy Paws Pet Insurance gave me the piece of mind to book an urgent appointment with the specialist, because I knew 80% of Kali's vet bill would be reimbursed to me. Kali needed emergency surgery to protect her vision and Healthy Paws covered both the emergency consultation plus all the surgery fees. Kali is doing well and her eye looks fantastic.

Easy, painless claims process. I was sure there would be a catch and some hassle like other insurances. There were no issues. Didn't have to worry about bills when caring for my pet which greatly eased an otherwise difficult time. They even emailed me to check on my dog. Great experience.
