Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy paws pet insurance is a must-have if you get a dog. I got healthy Paws when I first got my puppy. Recently I had to rush her to an animal emergency hospital because it was a Sunday and she had eaten, what ended up being a piece of towel that had gotten stuck in her small intestine. They had to do emergency surgery and open her up, she wouldn't have made it through the night. When you bring your pet to an emergency hospital the bill is twice as much as if you were to bring them to your regular vet. Healthy Paws did exactly what they said they would, I only had to pay 90% of the bill they also took care of everything including the medication and ICU in the vet's office the next day,... Healthypaws has been wonderful to work with. Our dog had to have surgery two times and it was so helpful to have insurance to get us through this financially. The people at Healthypaws are kind, easy to work with and they process a claim very timely. I highly recommend them. We have had our dogs insured with them for several years.

I was shopping for pet insurance in the Fall of 2017 for my new puppy. I decided to enroll him in a Healthy Paws plan. I am so glad I chose Healthy Paws Insurance for my dog. So unexpectedly, my happy and always energetic not-even-one year old canine needed life-saving surgery this following Spring. Healthy Paws representatives are wonderful to speak with on the telephone and also incredibly helpful via online communication. Their plans are clearly outlined and in my experience they honor them to the letter. When it came to filing my first claim, I was completely occupied with my dog’s immediate and physical care needs as well as the usual demands of everyday life. Once I... Read More

We have our Heinz 57, Bo, and our Valley Bulldog, Herbie, insured with Health Paws. We purchased pet insurance after learning an expensive lesson with our beloved lab, Lincoln, who was diagnosed with both intestinal mast cell cancer and lymphoma. We did 9 months of costly chemotherapy, which prompted us to research pet insurance. I reviewed several plans and consistently, Health Paws came out on top. Bo had to have CCL surgery this past August. After we met his deductible, everything has been covered at 80%, including multiple rounds of physical therapy. Sadly, he recently tore his other CCL and will be undergoing surgery next week. Healthy Paws is again covering it. It has been... Read More

Healthy Paws is hands down the best pet insurance out there. My ten-month-old German Shepherd mix had almost $1K in vet bills a few weeks ago followed by an emergency room visit for a wound on her nose. Healthy Paws gave me the flexibility to tell the vet to run whatever tests she needed to in order to find out why my dog was sick, it covered her antibiotics, and I received my reimbursement less than two weeks later. Not only that, but Healthy Paws followed up with me to see how my dog is doing. Truly, a wonderful company! Filing claims is super fast and they keep you updated throughout the process. Highly recommend!

Our elderly cat Cleo is insured through Healthy Paws. Several times in the last three years she has had health crises. Being in New York City, treatment is insanely expensive. We've gotten excellent reimbursements from this company, in a timely fashion. They answer emails promptly and the customer service is the best. I recommend!

We found out our puppy had a liver shunt and would need surgery and medical care into the thousands. Healthy Paws was awesome in making us feel like everything was okay, providing a simple and quick process, for reimbursement, and following up with get well cards, etc. We love these guys and they are one of the few worth while pet insurance providers. Get them.

Our Betsi is a small adult mixed breed dog. She started having epileptic seizures on a daily basis, just of out nowhere. We took her to the vet and it turned out that a lot of aspects of her health were no perfect, also due to her old age, so a lot of examination needed to be done. We ended up performing various tests - Blood, Heart, Urine and even a Brain MRI in another dedicated clinic. Financially , this resulted in almost 5K USD in a matter of days. Betsi got several types of prescription medicine. Her seizures stopped, and she got medicine to treat her heart and liver issues. We submitted online claims through the healthy paws website after every treatment she had. In total we... Read More

We have been very happy with our decision to go with Healthy Paws. I"ve found their process to be very smooth. I just take a pic with my phone of the bills I've paid and submit. They even contacted me to see how our Chloe was doing after she had bladder surgery.
