Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is by far THE best pet health insurance company out there. Not only do they have the option to cover a very high percentage of qualifying vet bills (we have the 90% coverage rate), but submitting claims could not be easier. All you have to do is take a picture of the vet receipt on your phone, in the Healthy Paws app, and they take care of the rest of it. They are prompt and accurate. The best part about Healthy Paws though is that they have allowed us to keep our young 3 year old kitty Puma alive and healthy. Last year she got into something toxic outside, almost died, but was able to get the care she needed at a vet hospital for two nights (made doable and affordable for us... Read More

If I could give 10 stars I would. The customer service is excellent and reimbursement is so easy.My dog was in ER and hospitalized overnight my vet bill was pretty hefty.I simply submitted my paperwork online and had my reimbursement check within 10 days.I will never be without this plan again.I don’t know how pet owners can get by without it. Highly recommend this plan,it’s worth every penny.

Can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. I speak both as a long-time customer (dog and cat owner) and someone closely involved in one of the national animal welfare organizations. Healthy Paws understands that about the last thing anyone wants is a hassle with their insurance company over treatment of an injured or sick animal. So they've streamlined the claims process: easy claims submittal online and fast reimbursement either by check or direct deposit. Their basic business model seems to be a reasonable monthly premium charged to a credit card, a modest annual deductible when your pet needs vet services, and then no-questions-asked reimbursement (in my case 80%) of the... Healthy Paws has saved my dog's life. It's that simple. In the last six months, he's suffered two catastrophic events--a dog attack and a major illness. If Healthy Paws hadn't covered most of my bills for my dog's surgery after the attack, I wouldn't have been able to go to the vet just to find out what was wrong with my dog when he began acting sick a few months later. His care has been extremely expensive, and I never would have been able to afford any of it if I didn't know that Healthy Paws was there to help out. What I like about Healthy Paws is that everything has worked exactly the way they said it would. They cover the conditions they describe on their site, and are clear about... Read More

Healthy Paws not only provided exactly what they said they would, but did so in an extremely efficient, courteous and kind manner, well exceeding expectations. Our friends recommended Healthy Paws to us, and it's been the best decision we've made for our pet. Their rates seem very fair, their service above and beyond, and I only wish I could find health insurance this good for humans--I'd happily work with Healthy Paws and my own local vet for any accidents I personally had, and definitely for any of my pets. Overall I highly recommend pet health insurance as it can take the financial stress away from an already stressful situation of having to help your pet in an accident, illness or... Read More

I'm so happy that I invested in pet insurance with Healthy Paws. My 11-month old kitten developed a spinal condition that required many expensive tests and treatments, and Healthy Paws paid the claims within a reasonable time, after all documentation had been properly provided, including my kitten's acupuncture! I would highly recommend pet insurance, and specifically Healthy Paws Pet Insurance.

I researched several pet insurance companies and am so happy that I decided on Healthy Paws. We decided to get our 1-year-old rescue insurance after watching several of our friends go through expensive surgeries with their dogs. We figured it was a safety net that we would never need. This past summer our dog started pulling up lame and he ended up being diagnosed with Level 3/4 Luxating Patellas as a 3 year old. Surgery was considered the best option. With Healthy Paws the surgery and his medication was covered at 90 percent after our deductible. It saved us over $1300. I was worried that this surgery would limit coverage when he has to have his other knee corrected but Healthy... Read More

I am very pleased with Healthy Paws coverage and quick response to claims. I cannot speak highly enough for this company. (I had Embrace for two years prior to switching on a recommendation from my Vet. Embrace declined EVERYTHING, including an emergency tooth extraction. ) HP covered two surgeries for my fur baby without any hassle. They are clear, concise, and kind in their client treatment. Absolutely recommend!

Healthy paws pet insurance is a must-have if you get a dog. I got healthy Paws when I first got my puppy. Recently I had to rush her to an animal emergency hospital because it was a Sunday and she had eaten, what ended up being a piece of towel that had gotten stuck in her small intestine. They had to do emergency surgery and open her up, she wouldn't have made it through the night. When you bring your pet to an emergency hospital the bill is twice as much as if you were to bring them to your regular vet. Healthy Paws did exactly what they said they would, I only had to pay 90% of the bill they also took care of everything including the medication and ICU in the vet's office the next day,...
