Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I was not expecting my two year boxer to have a cancerous lump as if the worry was not enough there was the cost to get her back to good health. I learnt last time I had a fur baby not to neglect to purchase pet insurance although it seemed at the time with such a young dog not to overly concern me I went ahead and purchased it. Thanks heavens - I could concentrate on getting her well without the worry of the vet bill. The repayment was fast and I was kept updated - first class A++++++++++experience for me.

This pet insurance is fantastic! I mean in every aspect. I enrolled my Black Lab at 8 wks old. At 16 wks he unfortunately tore his ACL and his meniscus. I filed a claim for his $3100 surgery with Healthy Paws and within Days, received a check back for 90% of the entire bill. Filing claims is as easy as a photo . Hopefully I will not need to use this insurance so much. But it sure is a nice piece of mind knowing they care about your pet in ANY emergency if need be. Thanks Healthy Paws! Fabulous! We have adopted a miniature poodle that unbeknownst to us has a list of medical problems that came to be a year after we rescued him. A couple months after we got him, we decided to get pet insurance. After much research, we chose Healthy Paws. They have processed our claims to the penny that we expected and in a timely fashion. After an unexpected emergency surgery out-of-state on his eye, we received an e-mail expressing concern and wishing Grayson to get well quickly. We were so pleased to have received that. When we have called customer service with questions, they have been extremely nice and helpful. We would not use any other pet insurance. We have been extremely impressed... Read More

I have had Healthy Paws for almost a year now. I have come to believe that either they just process every claim I submit at a nail's pace or most of the reviews I read online are just fake. My 10 month old puppy has a congenital liver disorder discovered in his 6th month hence unfortunately he has many vet visits. I joined HP when he was 10 weeks. HP has NEVER reimbursed for payment of a claim in under 27 days for me. I always submit claims on the same day my pup receives service and submit all medical work as needed. They send lots of messages saying they are processing the claim... but never explain what takes them so long to reimburse me even after they have processed the claim and... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Anon - As a company, we value our client’s input, good or bad. Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with any degree of certainty using the information you provided in your review, so we’ll reply to your issues the best we can. We apologize for any delay in the processing of your claims, as a quick turnaround time is a priority for our customer care team. Due to our clients submitting a higher amount of claims for sick or injured pets, our processing time has taken a bit longer. We are implementing new procedures that are reducing our claims processing times. It is our number one priority and we promise it will get better.

My dog recently had TPLO surgery done, and healthypaws was able to expedite all claims that were made for the surgery as well as cover all prescriptions and rehabilitation. They are a very sincere group of people and do the right thing for you and your pet.

If ever something happens to my pets, I go into an emotional crisis. Just want them to be better at any cost. But then when the bills pile up I would go into another sort of crisis. A financial one. Now that my boy is insured I am relieved financially and only have to worry about getting him healthy again. As it should be

Before moving my dog to NYC, I was really concerned about the amount of trouble that she would get into. She is a corgi, low to the ground, and an extremely fast eater. I was really worried that she would eat some rotten bite of food on a walk and swallow it before I could stop her. I was also worried that she should get sick more often since there are so many more dogs here than in our home town. I ended up getting Healthy Paws pet insurance hoping it would bring me some peace of mind, and I'm so happy I decided to. The claims are easy to place and the turn around time for the checks is reasonable. I also appreciate how I can go to any vet that I want to without having to worry about... Read More

When it comes to difficult times with your loved ones, which are our fur babies, you worry and stress over doing everything possible to help them. They can’t easily tell us how they feel. We have to know their traits and monitor them closely. Meanwhile, you have bills and expenses to add to the stress. Well, I can speak from experience (unfortunately twice), that our soon to be two year old Lab, had to have procedures and major surgery from eating a tennis ball and a squeaker toy. The two procedures were just under $1000 and just about $4200. I was so happy to have an easy claim process and received payments without any further questions or justification. I was able to make my claim right... Read More
