Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Enrolling in Healthy Paws insurance for our chocolate lab was such a great decision. Our recent experience with the claims process was incredibly easy and an overall relief. Submitting a claim through the app and sending in medical forms is straight forward and takes about 5 minutes. The best part is if you need help and you call the help line, SOMEONE ANSWERS! This is not typical of insurance companies. My claims were reviewed, processed and paid out within a week. Afterwards, they even contacted me to see how my lab was recovering. What an incredible company and service.

I am beyond grateful for the help and professionalism of Healthy Paws Insurance. I try to tell people how important pet medical insurance is, but it is still under the radar, I'm afraid. If it weren't for the medical insurance from Healthy Paws, we would have had to take out loans to keep our dogs alive. I'm so thankful that I found this insurance.

I purchased Healthy Paws insurance when Maya was just a puppy. She is almost five now. Despite my skepticism of the insurance industry as a whole, this company has processed every claim I have submitted fairly and rapidly. This includes, among others, TPLO surgery on both knees and mast cell tumor removal at Cornell Veterinary Hospital. As you may imagine, no small expense. Without their help we could not have afforded the care that Maya desperately needed. We are extremely grateful.

If you are looking for pet insurance, look no further. Healthy Paws is the insurance to get. They cover all accident and injury (not pre-existing) and pay each and every invoice quickly. We have an epileptic dog and have been having a hard time getting his seizures under control so this has included hospitalizations, MRI's, prescriptions, doctor visits, etc. and Healthy Paws has covered everything - no questions asked. Love Healthy Paws!!

We have been SUPER happy with Healthy Paws. They have approved all reimbursements that fall within our policy's guidelines. They even emailed to check in on how our dog was doing after his surgery! Quick payments, wonderful customer service. Totally worth it.

I really don't know what I would have done if I didn't have Healthy paws. I've been paying for insurance for the past 3 years for both of my dogs - and actually hoping I would never have to use it - only because I've never had the experience before and I wasn't sure how it would work out. One of my dogs had an accident and needed double knee surgery. He was in pain and thank God for Healthy paws they processed the refund so quickly and they also sent me periodic emails asking about how our dog was doing - the rep I talked to on the phone was helpful and very sympathetic. This has been a great experience.

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for my cat and dog for over 3 years now. Healthy Paws has been nothing short of amazing. Our beloved cat recently developed congestive heart failure. She has been in-and-out of the emergency hospital several times and is currently under the care of a special cardiologist. Healthy Paws has paid for virtually everything; they have paid over $5,000 for her care in the last month alone. This medical care would not have been possible without Healthy Paws. In addition, our Golden Retriever has had various ear infection, allergy and skin issues; Healthy Paws has paid for those conditions, as well. Their customer service is excellent. Filing a... Healthy Paws delivers what they say they will. Their website lets clients easily compare costs for various annual deductibles and reimbursement percentages. Once the policy is active, they pay what they say they will, no hassles, no arguments. The website makes it easy to submit claims, you can even set it up to have the reimbursement checks deposited automatically into your bank account My 95-lb dog recently underwent extensive surgery for a torn cruciate ligament in her knee, and not only did Healthy Paws cover all the expenses related to her surgery and hospital stay, but they cover all her rehabilitation (physical therapy, underwater treadmill) which is making all the difference... When I signed up for pet insurance, I thought I would never need it. But Riker, my belgian malinois puppy, started limping just a few months afterward. After months of bed rest, xrays, and CT scans, we discovered a bone chip in his elbow, and the vet recommended surgery. I was terrified that we would be excluded from coverage due to my recent signup, or that maybe Healthy Paws would balk at the cost of surgery. However, they covered almost everything, including physical therapy afterwards, and the reimbursement checks were timely. I don't think I would have been able to afford the care on my own. Riker is still recovering, but I'm super happy with Healthy Paws.

WE RESCUED MY DOG MILO AND DECIDED TO GET PET INSURANCE BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE IT WITH OUR FIRST DOG. AFTER SHE GOT SICK WE REALIZED THAT IT WAS A MISTAKE. NOT KNOWING MILO'S HEALTH HISTORY MADE ME REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT INSURANCE IS. HEALTHY PAWS MADE MAKING A CLAIM SO EASY AND DIDN'T GIVE US A HARD TIME. WE FILED 2 CLAIMS IN 2 YEARS AND WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE REIMBURSEMENT WE RECEIVED. THEY ALSO EMAILED US TO CHECK ON HOW HE WAS DOING. THIS IS A GREAT COMPANY!
