Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My husband and I have never insured any of our dogs in the past, we've just paid for all medical expenses out of our own pockets. However, when we got our new pup, the breeder required all adopting families to insure the pups. At first I was reluctant, but decided to go ahead with her wishes. Healthy Paws was one of the ones she recommended, and I liked the reviews I read. I'd like to let you know that Healthy Paws is an AMAZING company!! They settled our claims quickly and the checks were a God send. Any time I called and spoke to a representative, they were friendly, informative, and followed up on any questions that they were unable to answer on the spot. They made me feel... Read More

Healthy Paws pet insurance has protested my pets for several years. We have experienced several surgeries for our dogs in which Healthy Paws insurance came in handy. They were responsive, easy to deal with and quick in the review and processing of claims. I highly recommend all pet owners to consider getting Healthy Paws insurance. It not only protects your pets but also gives you peace of mind when significant injuries or illnesses occur.

I have had Healthy Paws insurance for a couple years now and have zero regrets. They are very up front about what they do and don't cover and what their expectations are of you. I can submit all my claims on my phone and now they have direct deposit to get your reimbursement. Unfortunately, I have a young dog fighting cancer and it has been very costly and heartbreaking. So far, Healthy Paws has covered everything I'd expect them to and have had no issues. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is sometimes it can be two weeks or a little longer to get a claim completed. I highly, highly recommend them!

I'm EXTREMELY happy and impressed how Healthy Paws Pet Insurance handled my situation. My boy dog Bogie (Yorkie mix) did swallowed part of a peach pit that, of course, got logged and created a dangerous situation. On top of it, it was on a Sunday. So I had to bring him to the emergency vet where I was told he needed surgery right away. After they shared the cost for all the services they would needed to do, I got right away in touch with Healthy Paws to make sure I was covered and I could give the go ahead to the surgeon. Not only where they genuinely very concerned for Bogie but assured me right away that there was no question that the surgery should and could be done and I was covered by... Read More

Healthy Paws is the best insurance for my dog that I have ever had. Claims are accepted via fax or e-mail or even by text. Just snap a pic of your receipts and send them along. Processing is fast and accurate. This coverage has paid for my min pin's lab work and imaging. When he was diagnosed with diabetes early in 2017, his serial blood work needed to get his blood sugar under control were covered. In July, he went blind from diabetic cataracts. Because we had great coverage with Healthy Paws, we could schedule him to have bilateral cataract removal with lens implants right away and within a month he was fully sighted and back to his healthy, happy self again. Working with... Read More

I'm so pleased with our coverage we have for our small pup with Healthy Paws. When our puppy suffered an accidental break in his front paw he underwent surgery that same day. It was a relief to know that our Healthy Paws coverage was in place to assist in the costs related to his surgery and subsequent care. Filing claims were easy and the communication with the Healthy Paws team was seamless! Their thorough and thoughtful follow up into our pup's recovery was genuine and appreciated. A+ customer service!

My puppy recently underwent knee surgery. The claims process went very smoothly and I am extremely satisfied on how quickly my claim was settled. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws to any pet owner. It gives me great peace of mind to know that they will be there for my puppy in the future should we need them again. Thank you Healthy Paws.

Search no more for pet insurance for your beloved pet! Healthy Paws ought to be your choice of your pet insurance. I cannot tell you how happy I am with Healthy Paws. I truly hope that you don’t need to use pet insurance, but when you do, Healthy Paws has your back. Their reimbursement process is lightning fast, and when you have a question, they get back to very quickly. Everybody at Healthy Paws are super nice, friendly, compassionate and empathetic. I adopted my dog, Daisy, almost 7 years ago when she was 10-months old. Right after I brought her home, I realized that she had a kennel cough, then within a month she got a ring worm, and then she started limping on her back leg. I... Read More

I have had Lilly, my Miniature Schnauzer, insured with Healthy Paws since 2014. I must say, I am EXTREMELY pleased. I did not have to use the coverage until June-Aug of 2017, and boy am I glad I had it!! Lilly had to have a series of tests, x-rays and ultrasounds; and subsequently, surgery to remove 2 bladder stones. She will also have to have periodic tests to keep an eye on her heart. All of this resulted in 8 claims, which were processed and paid surprisingly fast! The claim filing system is very simple and the customer service is outstanding. They answer emails quickly and you can always get them on the phone. They even emailed to ask about Lilly after her... Read More

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. My sweet dog - a 5 year old Bichon - was very ill and it was recommended by my vet that he be seen by internal veterinary specialists. He was hospitalized basically in an ICU unit and he ultimately needed surgery. He nearly didn't make it, but with their intensive expert care he is now home and doing well. This MAJOR cost for his care was entirely paid for by Healthy Paws less my 10% deductible. I took out this pet insurance policy when he was a small puppy before he had any medical issues, and I am so glad that I did. I highly recommend them.
