Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I can't say enough good things about Healthy Paws. My sweet dog - a 5 year old Bichon - was very ill and it was recommended by my vet that he be seen by internal veterinary specialists. He was hospitalized basically in an ICU unit and he ultimately needed surgery. He nearly didn't make it, but with their intensive expert care he is now home and doing well. This MAJOR cost for his care was entirely paid for by Healthy Paws less my 10% deductible. I took out this pet insurance policy when he was a small puppy before he had any medical issues, and I am so glad that I did. I highly recommend them.

We have had this insurance for almost a year and I really expected more from them , I don't think they care about you or your problems, the last time that I needed their services I sent them a claim an no-one contacted me, no one told me how long was going to take. Not even an email, after 10 days I sent an email to customer service, just then they told me the my claim had been given to one representative and he will be in contact with me, giving me all the updates ,but I never receive anything no one cared about my claim ,after I contacted them again 10 days after that they processed my claim,I was expecting more from them for all the good reviews but I think it was just bad look for me,... Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Cesar, We apologize for the delay in processing your claims and appreciate you reaching out to us in regards to your issue. The summer months tend to be much busier for pet insurance, as more people take time off and get out and about with their pets. There are also many more seasonal conditions that can mean illnesses and injuries. Due to our clients submitting a higher amount of claims for sick or injured pets, our processing time has taken a bit longer. Rest assured, we have been working hard to process claims in the order that we receive them. We hope your pet is feeling better!

We initially went with Healthy Paws because it is a dog-owner foundation. Since we signed up in March, 2014 'Teddy' has had two knee surgeries, ($9,000). As most of us know we have to pay the surgeon before the surgery is done. We were able to pay this with a credit card, and were able to 'float' until the credit card bill came due. Then we paid the credit card before they came due. This was possible due to fast processing of our claims by Health Paws. We would give Healthy Paws TEN stars!

I would highly recommend healthy paws for pet insurance! Sadly my 10 year old pup was hit by a car. He suffered an incredible amount of trauma. His vet bill was going to be 10k +, which we do not have that kind of money sitting around. Thank goodness we had Healthy Paws, they were so kind & worked with us to do direct pay with the vet so we coukd focus on the recovery of our dog & not stress about the $.

Healthy Paws is an outstandingly reliable pet insurance for the pooch! I was terribly scared when my two year old puppy got pneumonia. I rushed him to the hospital where he stayed for 3 days so he could be under supervised professional care. The final bill came to over $5000. While we were able to pay the bill, it was a huge relief to know that Healthy Paws is there and will reimburse me a good chunk of that change. I cannot say enough good about this service! They deserve an A+ in my book.

I signed up for Healthy Paws for my yellow lab, Jack in February this year when he was 1.5 years old. He was a healthy happy pup but I heard labs tend to have joint problems when they get older and the medical expenses are astonishingly high. So I decided to sign up when he was still young and issue free. Unfortunately, the joint issue happened to Jack much earlier than I expected. He started limping one day in May all of a sudden. After a few vet visits at Banfield, the vet suspected it was a torn CCL. I researched online for orthopedic surgeons for pets in California and was willing to travel far to get Jack the best treatment. I came across Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Tustin... Read More

Our dog, Lala, had a serious accident at the end of July. Healthy Paws has been wonderful in supporting us since the accident: they have been very kind and helpful over the phone and have met all their responsibilities as detailed in our policy with no hassle whatsoever. They have saved us thousands of dollars and immeasurable stress and have made it easy to get our dog the best care. They even sent us a hand-signed card with notes from people throughout the company. We are so grateful to have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance.

I brought Emma (Chihuahua/dachshund) home New Year’s Day 2017 and signed her up for Healthy Paws immediately. I had Healthy Paws for her sister Winnie (Chihuahua) and felt that even though she was a healthy young puppy the two of them together might get into some shenanigans. I was starting to feel like a dope paying for pet insurance for both of them when SURPRISE Emma broke her leg. And not just a straight break like you think of ... She broke her femoral growth plate in half and shattered her knee cap and it splintered off inside of her. Surgery went very well and she had a massive incision on her tiny back leg and but no cast. I felt like I was going to break her during the healing... Read More

I've had Healthy Paws for 4 years now, and my poor dog has needed it every year. Thank goodness for this insurance! They are no hassle and prompt in paying. Just download the app, snap a pic of the bill and hit submit. That's it, then wait for the check in the mail. The rates do go up each year, but for what they have had to payout, other carriers may have dropped us. Healthy Paws did not.

I have had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance since 2008 on all of my pets. Although I was initially skeptical about the benefits of pet health insurance versus the cost, I am now a strong advocate of pet health insurance. I urge all of my friends and acquaintances to get it on their pets. I even tell strangers about it when the opportunity arises. Why am I so convinced of the benefit of having pet health insurance? Let me tell you about a couple of my experiences! I insured Ginny, a mixed-breed cat I adopted as a kitten, with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance when she was several years old in 2008. Ginny was totally healthy at the time. However, as Ginny got older, she developed diabetes. Her insulin... Read More
