Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have a mix-breed 3-year old dog, and she was eligible for the highest coverage (100$ deductible, 90% coverage thereafter) which I purchased. I pay 40-something a month which is substantial, but it was so worth it when my dog had to undergo emergency surgery. She was fetching a stick and jumped, caught it, then landed on it. It impaled under her tongue towards her throat a good 8 inches. The total cost of the surgery and care was close to 1700. Healthy Paws covered about 1400. They have never tried to dispute a claim or tried to argue that a health issue was a pre-existing condition; granted, I placed my dog on insurance when she was 1. Their app is easy to use and submitting claims is... Read More

Our healthy 11 month old rescue dog caught her leg in a whole while running in the back yard and came limping toward the house on three legs. Two hours later we had been sent directly from our vet to a specialty hospital: x-rays indicated a spiral fracture that could not be splinted. Thea needed orthopedic surgery to pin the delicate bones in her leg back together. We knew it would be expensive and we hoped that our pet insurance would provide the coverage outlined in the policy. Claims staff responded quickly to our questions, and communicated by email to let us know that they had received our claim and that it was being processed. We are happy to report that Healthy Paws... Super quick turn around time on claims and exceptional service from their staff. Our lab had a ccl tear, it's as easy as snapping pictures of your bill and submitting your claim through their easy to use app. It gives you such piece of mind to know they cover high priced procedures. They even checked in afterwards to see how she was doing. Definitely worth every penny!!

My baby Lucy needed surgery after being attacked by my neighbors dog while on a walk. Besides having the support of the medical staff at a great facility, it was nice to know that I had the support of HealthyPaws as well. A representative from the claims department called to ask how Lucy was doing and to informed me that they would be sending the check right away. I have began to recommend healthy paws to friends and family who have pets. I am very pleased and touched that Tim from healthy paws send me a personalized email to check on Lucy. Getting my baby girls pet insurance with healthy paws was a great decision! I highly recommend it.

If you love your pet, please please get them Healthy Paws insurance ! I am so grateful for what this company has done for me and my English bulldog..nice tried other pet insurance companies but it didn't seem to be worth it because filing a claim was such a hassle and other companies covered almost nothing, but a friend referred me to healthy Paws and I wish I signed up with them sooner ! I opted for the highest level of coverage, and between moves my dog had multiple vets.. Healthy Paws went out of their way to obtain his medical history when I had problems getting in touch with previous vets myself.. they didn't have to do all of that just so they can reimburse me! Unfortunately my pet... Read More

There are not enough positive things I can say about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. This was my first experience with pet insurance and I did my research with several companies and Healthy Paws had the best coverage for the most reasonable monthly fee. They cover everything, except the doctor's exam and immunizations, which is incredibly reasonable. Their services have allowed me to get my dog the very best medical care possible and have come to our rescue when she had to have major knee surgery this year. They review and pay claims incredibly fast - usually within a week or 2 and the app is so easy to use! It allows you to take a picture of your receipt and upload it to the site, so you... Read More

I chose Healthy Pet Paws for its high consumer advocate rating. After reading thoroughly through the policies and disclosures I made a purchase. In the morning I saw the receipt that noted an additional $25 set up fee was applied. This set up fee was not disclosed prior to purchase. I'm no longer confident I know exactly what I'm getting, guessing there will be more undisclosed exclusions at a time I really need insurance.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Evelyn - Welcome to the Healthy Paws family! We charge a one-time policy set up fee per policy to cover the cost of the monthly billing costs over the life of your pet. That’s another one of our advantages. Many of our competitors include a $1- $2 policy set up or enrollment fee per pet, per month. So for instance, over 10 years, our policy set up fee would be a maximum of $25 per policy. If you were with another pet insurance company, your monthly enrollment fee could add up to over $240 per each pet. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Care Team via email or call us at 855-898-8991.

After spending well over $10,000 in medical bills on our previous dog, we researched several dog insurance companies before we purchased our new pup. We felt the most comfortable with Healthy Paws and are glad we chose them. Our dog, Denali, sadly, was diagnosed recently with osteosarcoma and we made the difficult decision to have our dog's leg amputated and to start chemotherapy to give him the best chance at survival. These decisions we had to make were tough, on their own, but the entire process was made easier knowing that Healthy Paws was there to provide us with the financial ability to give our Denali the best care possible. As per their website, within 10 business days of my... Read More

I whole heartedly recommend Healthy Paws. Our 14 month old puppy had been in ICU for a full 7 days, having undergone major surgery - Healthy Paws covered 80% of an extremely expensive hospital bill. Receiving our reimbursement helped relieve much anxiety, allowing us to concentrate our attention on caring for our little guy when he finally came home. Also, I was touched that someone personally called, and when they did not reach me, emailed me to inquire on how our puppy was feeling and recuperating Don't know of any company that takes the time to do that. Healthy Paws App for submitting a bill could not be more simple to use - just take a picture of the bill with your phone and... Read More
