Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Couldn't be simpler. I would recommend healthy paws to anyone who has pets. I have been in the position where my pet was very ill and we had no insurance. Never again! This last time my dog Flash was ill we were able to focus 100% on his care and not worry at all about the cost. I can't say enough good things about this company and the simplicity. Love the app. Love the customer service. Love the simplicity. Love that they actually care about your pets.

Healthy Paws has been great at handling our claims during a particular hard time when our french bulldog is suffering from issues related to allergies not yet identified. Pippa (our frenchie) seems to be reacting well to the treatment and hope to finally address the itchiness that has persisted for months now. Healthy Paws was for sure the best choice for pet insurance.

On May 9, 2017, every dog owner’s nightmare happened to us: an unleashed, uncollared neighborhood dog left his property, made a beeline for my dog and I while we were out for our afternoon walk and brutally attacked her. Letty would have been killed had she not sought safety under an SUV. She spent the next week in a critical care unit at a veterinary hospital. The costs for treatment quickly mounted. Healthy Paws responded to our claim quickly and without any complication. They accepted the claim fully as it was submitted without argument. This enabled us to give our beloved pet with all the care she needed. Healthy Pets, along with all of our friends and family, made this horrifying... Read More

I Love Healthy Paws!! My dogs and I have been a part of the Healthy Paws family for almost two years. I recently had to file my first claim, and it was an absolute breeze! No stress at all! I have submitted close to 5,000 in claims in the past 2 months, and have had zero issues! The Healthy Paws team has been nothing but helpful, caring and concerned through my dogs injury and recovery. They have checked in on us, and made me feel like a part of their family. I will always have dogs, and they will always be with Healthy Paws!

I had to rush my dog to an emergency clinic for surgery due to an obstruction. This was the third claim as a relatively new Healthy Paws client. Filing the claims has been so incredible easy with the app that they provide. The fact that that reimbursement has been rapid and without hassle provided some peace in an otherwise stressful situation. When I called to check on the final claim, coincidentally, it turned out that the representative, Tyson, had the very SAME situation with his dog on exactly the same day! He was patient, understanding and kind. We had a pertinent discussion about our dogs' issues. It was like talking to a dog owner friend! I've already recommended Healthy Paws to... Read More

Our lab tore his ACL and had to have surgery a few weeks ago. We were so thankful we had signed him up for pet insurance with Healthy Paws. Filing a claim online was very easy, and it was processed quickly. It's nice to have peace of mind knowing that we could afford to provide our dog the care he needed.

I registered my 2 dogs with Healthy Paws 4 years ago and continue to be satisfied and impressed with the service and speed of Healthy Paws. Just 2 weeks ago, one of my dogs Brobee experienced bloat also known as GDV. Emergency surgery was required and the operation would not be scheduled until payment was made. Healthy Paws confirmed coverage and made a direct payment to the Animal Hospital. With 90% coverage, I only had to cover approx $600 of this $6000 procedure. Other pet owners at the hospital without Healthy Paws had to pay in full and wait weeks for reimbursement from their insurance provider. I raved about Healthy Paws and hope some of them are able to switch. I tell all my friends... Read More

Healthy Paws are more efficient, hospitable and efficient than my own health insurers! They respond to your emails, they keep you updated along every step of a claim, they follow up after a procedure to see how things are going, they provide clear breakdowns and their app is really useful! I would certainly recommend!

If only human healthcare was this good! Our 4-year old pug was diagnosed with hip dysplasia which came as a complete shock. He is an extremely healthy little guy who according to our primary vet is one of the most in shape pugs she has ever seen. Given several options on how to treat we chose to have hip replacement surgery, a more aggressive route, but one that offered him the best chance to enjoy the rest of his life. We went to one of the best hip replacement surgeons in the country in Texas (we live in Arizona). Cuper just had his surgery last week (which was very successful) and when we got home we filed our claim with Healthy Paws - the claim was approved THREE HOURS after we... Read More
