Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My wife and I rescued our German Shepard mix, Phi, in September of 2016. In February 2017 Phi ate half of a tennis ball and had to have it surgically removed. After paying $6k for the operation and recovery, my wife and I decided we didn't want to leave his life in the hands of our limited emergency funds ever again. We researched pet insurance and healthy paws came out top rated. I am a skeptic with ratings, but you have to trust something, so we signed Phi up in April. Sure enough, by June he had eaten another foreign object that he couldn't pass. I was afraid that since Phi had eaten something in the past, his incident wouldn't be covered, but we weren't ready to let our 2 year old... Read More

We noticed a couple of growths on our 8 yr old Shihtzu a couple of months ago and then recently saw 3 more , so our vet suggested that our girl Bunny have surgery on them and send them for a biopsy. Fortunately, 4 of the tumors were benign with the 5th somewhat in question as it had some mast cells but we will keep an eye to see if it comes back. Anyway, the bill for the whole surgery including anesthesia was $1,700.00 . Luckily, we had Healthy Paws insurance and they covered 90% of the bill. We cant tell you how comforting it was to know that not only did our girl come through the surgery ok, but that we didnt have to bear the brunt of the total bill. We filed the claim and got a... Healthy Paws has surpassed our expectations! We were hesitant to pay for pet insurance but finally decided, after hearing stories from others, that we should do it. We are now so thankful we did. Our dog had a partial tear in his knee that required surgery as he stopped putting weight on it and was hoping on three legs. Healthy Paws has supported us, both financially and personally, in having all the necessary appointments and procedures up to the day of surgery. Obviously the financial aspect is fabulous but even more so is that a few days out of his surgery, Healthy Paws followed up to check on how our dog was doing. That really amazed me and made me feel like they were truly there... Read More

Healthy Paws has been a pleasure to work with, and their customer service has been very helpful every step of the way during my pup Maggies treatment. Taking a picture of my billings with my smart phone and attaching them to my claim, makes submitting claims very easy!!

Healthy Paws saved me from a major financial set back. The coverage they provide allows me to continue affording medical care for my baby. A little over two weeks ago, I got home from work one evening, and found my baby, Luka, a one year old Briard, extremely lethargic and barely breathing. I rushed him to Blue Pearl Emergency, where they worked on him immediately and were able to stabilize him. The following morning, I was notified that Luka needed to go into emergency surgery. Surgery never entered my mind and I completely lost it. I was overwhelmed with fear for my baby; stressed out beyond words about whether he will survive not to mention equally stressed out about the cost of this... Read More

I have had all my pets 10 dogs and 2 cats acquire policies insured with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for about 7 years now. They have proven time and time again to be an excellent insurance company to protect my pets. Healthy Paws paid for my claims many times over. I have an older dog who has rarely had a claim in the six years he has had his policy which was established when he was 8 weeks old. However, this last June 2017 he began having more difficulties breathing and I found out that he needed a surgery on his throat, tongue, and nose. I probably could not have afforded the cost of $2,251 on my own but Healthy Paws came through once again and they issued me a check that saved me... Read More

HealthyPaws Pet insurance is truly invaluable. Less than a week after submitting our claims, we were reimbursed for 90% (less a $250 deductible) by Healthy Paws for veterinary care costs totaling almost $12,000. The piece of mind we have had, knowing that we could get our beloved five year old dog, Maggie, treatment without worrying as much about how burdensome the expense was going to be, is immense. This is the first pet we've purchased insurance for and I am now an unqualified believer in its value. Our dear Maggie is recovering from surgery for a pancreatic abscess. It was touch and go and she spent five days in the hospital. I was concerned that going forward we would lose our... Read More

Healthy Paws cares... after our claim was completed, Tim from HP reached out to see how we were making out with Riley. It was clear that they care beyond providing stellar insurance and actually want the pets they're protecting to be healthy and happy. I look forward to referring future pet owners and adding my future pets to Healthy Paws to ensure their health and happiness.

My dog suffered a life endangering bout of "bloat" in which his stomach twisted and required emergency surgery and a three-day hospital stay. We were fortunate to have access to a great emergency vet, and were so thankful that Healthy Paws insurance gave us the confidence to have him treated without fear of the cost. Our claim was handled literally within hours of sending it in, and today I received a check for 90% of our expenses, minus our deductible. Healthy Paws was one of the smartest decisions we made when we got Sensei as a puppy.
