Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We have had dogs and cats and pet insurance for many years and we have had pet insurance issues for just as many years. Some have high premiums, some make you jump through so many hoops to prove over and over again that there wasn't a preexisting condition and some take forever to pay. Some just find excuses never to pay up. Healthy Paws does none of that. They are reasonably priced (especially important for us given we have 4 pets), they make submitting a claim SO EASY (just take a photo of your invoice and submit it via the app) and they process things quickly and with no fuss. They require the standard information - medical history - but they don't make you jump through ridiculous... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance covered a marginal surgical procedure for my dog for $800. It was an issue that would have gone away on its own in time and they didn't have to cover, and they still covered it at 90% and not only did that, they CHECKED IN after the surgery to see how she was. Whose health insurance even does that? They are worth every penny.

I have been a loyal and appreciative Healthy Paws customer since 2015. They have taken amazing care of my two Labradors who have both had significant health emergencies. Most recently my dog tore her ACL. The surgery was over $3,500 to repair her knee and 90% of it was covered, no questions asked. Their customer service is impeccable. They process claims extremely fast and the best part is that they truly care! I highly recommend them.

Amazing company with prompt response and compassion. My dog had to have surgery and every conversation I had with the reps was nice and they all showed concern about my dog's well being. I even got an email a week later asking how my dog was recovering. What insurance company does that? Everything (except the vet exam was covered), and I got a check quickly in the mail. I highly recommend healthy paws!

I am writing to say how grateful we are for Healthy Paws. My husband and I adopted our male cat, Davin when he was estimated to be about 9 years old. He was supposedly in good health except for a lot of missing teeth. We usually adopt older cats and they come with lots of health issues. I had never considered getting pet insurance before because of all the pre-existing conditions older cats have. Davin was different in that he had been given a clean bill of health before we adopted him. Fast forward 3 years. I could tell it was time to have Davin’s teeth looked at and took him to a veterinary dentist for a consultation. The dentist explained to us that Davin would need his 3... Read More

I have been a customer of Healthy Paws since February of 2014. I knew that it would be a wise decision to purchase pet insurance when we adopted our French Bulldog, because they are prone to certain health issues. I did a fair amount of research and found that Healthy Paws was not necessarily the name that came up the most, but it definitely had the best and most consistent reviews. So, we decided to give them a try. Our dog, who is now 3.5 years old, suffers from bad environmental allergies, which require a monthly prescription and, until recently, a monthly shot. He's gone through allergy testing, trying different medications in different doses, creams, shampoos, sprays and medicated... Read More

I've had two pets insured with Healthy Paws for about two years now. One of them is basically never sick and the other one seems to have bad luck and was in and out of the vet for her whole puppyhood. Healthy Paws has reimbursed us promptly, answered questions promptly, and has done everything they advertised they would do, with really good customer care and follow up.

I love this company! I researched many pet insurance companies and by far Healthy Paws Pet Insurance provides the best pet insurance ANYWHERE. The cost, coverage, and ease of making a claim (via a picture on their APP) is far superior to other companies. My first claim was seamless and recently I needed to make a second claim for my 18 month old French Bulldog. Again, the process was seamless and there were no gimmicks to deny either claim. My deductible was only $100.00 and Healthy Paws covered 90% on both claims. I have referred multiple family members and friends and EVERYONE who is now insured by Healthy Paws loves this company. I very rarely write reviews but have been so impressed... Read More

My 3 year old boxer/bully mix decided to make a meal out of the decorative stones in the yard over the Memorial Day holiday. She got terribly sick in a day and we rushed her to AVETS animal hospital for the best care. We only joined Healthy Paws early this year and this was her first accident. Needless to say it was a very anxious time. It took about 3 minutes as we were checking out of the hospital to file her claim. Since Healthy Paws app explained the process very well, the vet was able to send everything over immediately. The very next day we were contacted, two days later the claim was complete, and within the week our reimbursement check was processed. I would recommend Healthy... Read More

We owe Healthy Paws a big thank you! Without them, we would not be able to provide the level care that we would want for dog. Gizmo got a lepto infection that caused his chronic kidney disease to worsen. This caused secondary issues with his liver and GI tract. Poor pup had to spend a week in the hospital and later returned due to relapse. We were so thankful for Healthy Paws insurance. With Healthy Paws, we could focus on getting our pup better instead of the finances of it all. Healthy Paws covered thousands of dollars of hospital bills and medications. They even followed up to see how he was doing afterward which was incredibly nice and thoughtful! Submitting a claim was fast... Read More
