Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We have been customers of Healthy Paws since 2012. Both of our dogs are enrolled. We have used the insurance many times but recently one of our dogs was diagnosed with liver cancer. It took a lot of diagnostics including complete bloodwork, an ultrasound, and finally a very costly surgery. Over the past couple of months I have submitted nearly $9000 worth of claims. It is simple--snap a picture of your detailed receipt and submit via the Healthy Paws app. I have never been questioned about anything on any claim. Everything except the office visits are covered including expensive medication and inpatient care. The claims are processed usually within 5-7 days and I am reimbursed... Read More

I could not be more pleased with Healthy Paws. I feel so lucky to have found them. They covered my dog's ACL surgery even though the injury occurred approximately two months after obtaining the insurance. Granted, the injury did legitimately occur after obtaining the insurance, but given the short time frame I was afraid they might try to find a way to get out of paying. They did no such thing. On the contrary, they paid the claims quickly and even followed up inquiring as to our dog's health and recovery. I could not recommend them more.

We have two labs. Healthypaws had the best reviews for their insurance plans and they were accurate. We've been with them for about three years and strongly recommend them. The service is great. It is super easy to file a claim and the claims are processed and paid very quickly. We are very satisfied with Healthypaws and have recommended them to family and friends. It is well worth having insurance when you have large dogs like ours.

We received excellent care when our 3 yr. old Leonberger, Della, was brought in unable to breathe. We arrived within minutes and they were waiting outside for us and saved her life. She spent 3 days in ICU. Healthy Paws took care of 90% of the expenses. So easy to file our claim online and received a check back within a week. The customer service is spectacular. Would suggest this pet insurance company to anyone with a pet.

This is the best decision I've ever made and is so simple to process invoices and they pay you back very quickly. I had to take my dog to the emergency and I had no worries for financial reasons. This gives me piece of mind both for my dog and my pocket book, plus she gets the best healthcare and Dr's available! She has better health insurance than I do!

My dog was seriously ill and needed very expensive meds and several diagnostic tests. I called Healthy Paws from the emergency hospital for clarification and assurance these would be covered. The customer service person was extremely helpful and compassionate. She assured me as long as this wasn't a pre-existing condition, it would all be covered. Lucy survived and is doing so much better. I filed my claims on Monday and received a check on Saturday. Needless to say I was extremely satisfied with their service.

I bought Healthy Paws coverage for my female German shepherd after a terrible cancer scare that cost me more than $2,000 in a week’s time. The local vets were wrong and we were elated when the specialists at UPenn told us she was just fine. Of course, that didn’t help our bank account. We were still out all that money on a misdiagnosis. During the short time that we thought we would lose our little girl, my husband and I were numb and discussing ways to come up with the money to at least try to save her-including taking a mortgage on our home. I know that sounds crazy to some people, but I know the dog people shopping for insurance will totally get it. I now have my new puppy insured as... Read More

We joined Healthy Paws last summer shortly after getting our new English Mastiff puppy. Like many, I've become a little jaded over the years with insurance companies pointing to the small print for reasons to not support a claim. Our experience with Healthy Paws has been nothing short of outstanding and I have been so relieved not only at the turn around time, but the clarity of the program. I want to take thus opportunity to thank the folks at Healthy Paws who have been incredibly responsive and kind with our claims and calls.

My boy Archer needed surgery on his fully torn CCL. I opted for the tplo surgery and prayed I would be covered. Not only was Archer covered but the reimbursement was sent promptly. I use the healthy paws app which makes things that much easier. Healthy paws even seemed genuinely concerned for Archer. By far THE BEST pet insurance company around. Every family member I add will be going on healthy paws insurance. I Can not say enough good things about this company!

My dogs got into some Advil,(poison to dogs), a few months back and required a ton emergency procedures. Healthy Paws covered 80% with no questions asked within days of the bills arriving. More recently, my dog broke his tooth and had to have a root canal and a crown put in. Again, 80% within a few days of the bill and no problems. At around $35-$40/mo, this insurance saved me about $10,000 over this last year, and allowed me to take the best care possible for my dogs. If you don't have insurance, get it. You never know what might happen and too many people end up putting down their pets because they can't afford an emergency....an ounce of prevention.....
