Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have a lab...that is reason enough to get pet insurance because they like to chew and sometimes eat random things! Healthy Paws not only provides great coverage, they actually care about how your pet is doing. Every time I talk to a rep on the phone or get an email, they ask how our dog is doing after being treated.

Extremely disappointed that they covered $100 on little over $700 vet bill. I am paying over $100 a month for three plus years of coverage. First claim ever . I guess I need to look elsewhere!

We'll provide some information as to what might effect your reimbursement. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Since we cannot look into your account, it's very likely that there may have been some items that fell under our limited exclusions and could not be reimbursed. Your reimbursement is also affected by the deductible and reimbursement level you chose at enrollment. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement. We hope your buddy is feeling better.

I got Healthy Paws Pet insurance a little over four years ago for my dog Jax who I adopted. This January he got very sick with a rare condition called Sterile Nodular Panniculitis. He was in the hospital for a week, had surgery and is on all kinds of medicine. His treatment is ongoing. The costs for all was so high. I don’t know what I would have done without Healthy Paws. They covered 90 % of all costs indicated in my contract after my deductible. Claims were processed quickly, customer service so helpful for my many questions and payment made quickly. I highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance.

My 15 month old dog needed extensive testing for a lung problem. Healthy Paws made it possible for her to get the recommended care. The claims process was easy and fast and I have been reimbursed almost $3,000. I dragged my feet when thinking about getting insurance, thinking “what’s the likelihood of such a young dog needing this level of veterinary care?” Turns out to be the smartest decision l could have made.

I’ve been using Healthy Paws to insure my pup for nearly two years now. When I first got my pup I did quite a bit of research on the various companies offering pet insurance. I was drawn to Healthy Paws’ simple benefits structure, as well as not having a cap on benefits per incident nor lifetime (super important!). They also had the highest user rating and seemed to be competitively priced with others, so I decided to give them a try… and I’m happy to say that to date they’ve delivered. They have been so helpful when it comes to getting the care my dogs need! I have one dog on allergy meds, who has had a ACL surgery, and was recently hospitalized. It would be impossible to manage if I did not have Healthy Paws.

We've had Healthy Paws Insurance for about 7 years now. They have helped us get through 2 big emergency hospitalizations. Very easy to navigate the app, and they reimburse you within a few days of submitting your claim. I recommend them to anyone who is thinking of getting their own pet!

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is the best pet insurance that a pet owner can possibly have, and I have had my pets covered under their pet insurance since 9/30/14 when I first got my 2 chocolate lab fur babies as pups, and I am so grateful that I did!!! Sadly one of my dogs passed away from bone cancer two years ago, and Healthy Paws provided great customer service and fast claim reimbursements during the time Bronx was being treated for cancer. And just recently, my second dog, Harley, had to have surgery to have a mass removed, and as always, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance provided great customer service, and fast claim reimbursement for Harley's surgery as well. I am so thankful that we had Healthy Paws after my mischievous little yorkie decided to eat a bunch of bird seed that fell from it's feeder and ended up needing surgery for a bowel obstruction. Submitting a claim could not be simpler (just a photo on my phone of the invoice) and it is reviewed within 10 days. No one should ever have to make medical decisions based on cost, but we all know that we do, particularly for our pets. Knowing I was covered by insurance was so reassuring during our difficult time. Update- after two days of inpatient antibiotics and recovery, the little man is back home.
