Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I could not be happier with Healthy Paws. They have been great with our Shih-Tzu during his treatment. He has cancer and in need of radiation, besides MRIs and C-scans. I do not know how we would do without Healthy Paws.

I’ve been with Healthy Paws for many years, covering six dogs in that time. On three occasions I filed major claims and each time the process was straight forward and efficient. Not only were my claims covered, but someone from the organization always followed up to see how my dogs were doing. That kind of personal touch scores a lot of points with me. I’ve just found that the people at Healthy Paws are friendly and caring, and I can’t recommend them high enough.

I chose Healthy Paws because of the flexibility in choosing the deductible and coverages, as well as the great reviews. I have had to make two claims thus far for my dog. Submitting the claim could not be easier. (All online as well). Since they had all my dog’s medical history up to date, the second claim was submitted, processed, and paid within 2 business days. I appreciate the follow-up emails as well checking up on her health. I am happy I chose them and highly recommend.

Having been a first time dog owner I purchased a Healthy Paws policy for my puppy. Well at 2 years old he developed epilepsy :( As difficult and heartbreaking as the diagnosis was, I was so grateful to have a Healthy Paws policy. This company is amazing! There is no yearly cap on reimbursement, the customer service is so helpful and the claims are processed quickly! I highly recommend Healthy Paws to any pet owner I know! Unfortunately the unexpected happens with our fur babies but having this policy allows my boy to have the best medical care possible!

My 9-month old kitten Milo had two seizures within a two week period. While it was very scary for us to go through, the peace of mind that we had pet insurance meant I didn't have to worry about affording any of the tests, overnight hospitalization, or medications. The explanation of benefits was very clear each time and the reimbursements were deposited as cash into my checking account within 1-2 days after filing the claims. Claims are incredibly easy to file as well -- all you have to do is upload the itemized invoice from the vet. When we adopted our rescue Skeeter I knew I wanted pet insurance. Prior to adopting Skeeter, we had adopted an English Bulldog and we passed up health insurance on him because of the cost. That was a huge mistake. There is nothing worse than having to make hard choices about your pets health because of the cost. Of course we always did what was necessary to provide our Bull Dog with the care he needed but it hurt us financially. For Skeeter I researched almost all of the pet insurance plans out there and after reading Healthy Paws policy, we decided that was the right plan for us. I adopted my pet and not long after, she needed surgery. This is the first pet I purchased insurance for and boy was I lucky to find Healthy Paws. After looking into several, I chose Healthy Paws and I could not be happier with that decision. My dog has issues as a result of the surgery and HP has been there every step of the way for us. Since her meds are a result of the surgery, they cover her meds and I submit my claim every six months (my choice, not theirs). They have not only never balked at any of the 92 claims and counting, they email every now and then to check on her. HP really cares. I have been with Healthy Paws since 2017. I have been pleased with their response time and ease of filing claims, but with a sizeable deductible, I have yet to receive reimbursement. On October 7, 2020 my dog needed surgery. I filed the claim promptly. No word. I have written numerous times and called customer service. Last week customer service told me it was an “open” invoice from vet. As surgery was completed and I had paid $1300, I was becoming impatient with an apparent non response and run around. The agent called my vet, who responded with the supposedly required paperwork. My recent communication from Healthy Paws still insists that it is “open” and that they need full records now... We have 2 rescue pit bull and enrolled both in Healthy Paws as soon as they were eligible since both between eight and twelve weeks when we got them. In the almost four years we have had them, there has been a series of health issues, one broke his back, the other has chronic urinary and kidney issues. The cost of care for both would have bankrupted us if not for Healthy Paws. They have never once questioned a procedure, some of which have been costly. We always have receive reimbursement promptly and there is always a follow up inquiring on the Heath of our babies. I would unequivocally recommend them to anyone seeking health insurance.
