Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

In the past 4.5 years that I've had pet insurance for my adopted Boston Terrier, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been extremely consistent in their pricing and reimbursements. I just spent a few grand on having a cyst and three teeth removed. Not only was I properly reimbursed; I was reimbursed within 7 business days of submitting the claim. I notice that there are other competing insurance options now; however, it makes sense to me to honor the plan that has been time-tested and consistent. That is so important.

Our dog got suddenly very ill and ended up in the ICU for 2 days. Each phone call from the vet was about yet another test that needed to be done. While we were so very worried about him, we had peace of mind because we had HEALTHY PAWS Pet Insurance. A bill of over $3000 was under $1000 and would've been even less if we had already met the deductible.I have told anyone who asked about him to get HEALTHY PAWS! And, they checked on him afterward! (He is back to normal!)

I insured my dog Luc with Healthy Paws when I adopted him after my last dog died of cancer when he 2 years old. The cost of trying to save him was nine thousand dollars. The first four years or so of my policy I never touch it. Just paid my premiums and my vet bills. A little before Luc was 6 years old he developed a growth on his lung which burst one day when we were out in the woods. It was an intense situation which required advanced medical treatment and surgery. Healthy Paws cleared the claim and sent me the reimbursement payment within days. Fast forward to this year and Luc has had to have his spleen removed due to a tumor, knee surgery, and a severe bacterial infection that... Read More

I cannot be more pleased with my coverage and the customer service with Healthy Paws. We have two French mastiffs or Douge de Boudreauxs . These pure breed dogs have had numerous surgeries and events through out their 5 and 6 years, many of which have been life threatening. I cannot express what a comfort it is to be able to tell the vet that we are authorizing any life saving measures and tests needed. Our last event was major abdominal surgery from bloat and torsion. I obtained the vet's notes the next day and uploaded my paid invoice and notes through the easy to use website. My payment was processed within a day or two and funds loaded into my bank. This first class company has... Read More

I am so happy I chose Healthy Paws pet insurance for my 2 fur babies. Since the fist of the year I have had to take my babies to the vet. One for a 3 month session of meds for an ear infection. Next my other baby had an infection and broken tooth. It took a few months for the infection to come to a head.. It actually exploded (making it better) but we ended up in the emergency getting it cleaned up.. I also had to have the same baby (Kona) get a root canal. So happy all is good with both my babies.. During all of this Healthy Paws never questioned me just paid me and always wish the best for my babies. I made the right choice choosing Healthy Paws.. I have peace of mind knowing I don't... Having a good pet insurance gives me stress-free, early vet visits and early treatment for my dogs. The fact that I don't have to worry about the big bill after already stressful vet visits makes me relaxed and I can only focus to give a good care for my dogs. Submitting a claim is so simple and easy and I usually get my money back in 1-2 days after the claim is completed (which takes a few days from the submission).

This is the worst company ever they lost a class action suit in Washington which they were ordered to pay millions back to customers. I've been with healthy clouds for for 8 years they have now decided after being with them for 8 years that they would like to raise rates due to my pet's age so my premiums got increased by 161.00 a month. Do you research this is what they're doing to all their customers and measure having to cancel their insurance and are left with older dogs who cannot get coverage anywhere else. They do not care about your pets they only care about money and how much they can get out of you.

After having to get a new credit card, they dropped coverage on me without sending any mail or phone calls for non-payment. IN OTHER WORDS, HEALTHY PAWS DOES NOT TAKE REASONABLE MEANS TO NOTIFY THEIR CUSTOMERS OF NON-PAYMENT. Just an email from an old address I had on file. I really had faith in them and was going to keep them for the life of my pet but I was cancelled 5 days before filing a $1400 claim. Thanks a million Healthy Paws. You guys are scumbags.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
900tgross - We’re sorry that your baby isn’t feeling well. A Healthy Paws policy is continuous until either canceled by the policyholder or if there is non-payment of premiums. We understand that there are times a policyholder's credit card used on the policy could be lost, compromised by fraud or that there may be a change in bank accounts, expiration date, etc. In a case where a credit card transaction for premium payment is declined, we send two emails to the policyholder informing them of the issue using the email address on their account, we re-try the credit card on file two more times and then mail a notice via the postal service of cancellation prior to the cancellation effective date. Starting at the end of August, we used this process, sending the emails to the address you used on your account up until you changed that late last week. We're sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope your pet feels better.
