Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws was a godsend. Our cat had to have a 5k surgery because he ate a bunch of hair ties. We got healthy paws pet insurance after that. Then our cat ate a toy causing bowel obstruction again, which meant we needed surgery yet again. Surgery was 5k again but Healthy Paws paid out $3,697. Healthy Paws made it easy to send medical records to and we got our claim processed succeessfully in only a few days. They are extremely responsive and professional.

When we brought our dog home 2.5 years ago, I wasn't convinced we needed pet insurance. It didn't cover preventative care and for the first 2 years, we didn't even meet our deductible. But then, year 3 hit, and over the course of 2 months we received progressively worse diagnoses after our bernedoodle began experiencing a limp. Over the course of 2 months, we went through imaging, bone biopsies, genetic testing, a rear leg amputation, and started chemo. We're over $18k into the journey to try to get another 2-4 years with our pup, and I couldn't be more grateful that we invested in Healthy Paws from the beginning, so that we didn't have to question any decisions we needed to make now,... Very poor actual coverage. Deductible procedures are deceptive. It is extremely difficult to contact a representative. So called customer service reps are sub contracted and work from. Home (pre pandemic) after multiple attempts to speak to a rep, I finally got through to someone. I couldn't hear anything she was saying because her kids were making so much noise. I don't know how thia company get a good reviews. I think their business practices are deceptive. The company is a website with gig workers

Johanna - We're sorry that you were not satisfied with our customer service and your policy coverage. The majority of our customer care team usually works out of our WA state office (pre-pandemic). We do have other employees that do work out of their home. We're glad that even with the issues during your call our customer care team member was able to resolve your issues. We also do our best to inform our clients on how our reimbursement calculations work. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our "Frequent Asked Questions" page. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state's Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. There are a number of other pet insurance companies that use this same method for calculating reimbursements. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement. Give your babies big hugs for us.

I have been a customer for a year. One of our cats suddenly developed a urinary track blockage and we had to bring him to vet emergency. Our insurance covered 80% of the cost! The process was very simple; our vet filed the paperwork; Healthy paws also requested our cat annual vet records and then the claim was approved. They stayed in touch during the process. Will continue with our coverage!

My cat is about two years old and got horribly ill, so we took him into the emergency vet. They had to keep him for a few nights and he had two emergency surgeries on his intestines. They had to remove his cecum and resect part of his bowel to send to a lab since they couldn't figure out what was going on. SO glad we had Healthy Paws. They ended up reimbursing us 80 percent of the total vet bill after the $250 deductible. Saved us thousands of dollars. The claim took a while to process, but that was to be expected because the bill was five pages long. The patience was worth it. We submitted records for his physicals right when we signed up for his insurance. I think that's a VERY... Read More

I did a ton of research on different pet insurance companies before I chose healthy paws 6 years ago. They have been incredible to deal with. Unfortunately, my pure bread dog had had many problems over the years which has led to several $2,000 - $3,000. The amount of vet problems she has had is crazy that it's almost laughable. Healthy Paws has always given me full reimbursement and never pushed back. Their customer support team is always helpful and it's very easy to submit a claim from your phone. I'm very thankful to them for helping me keep my very expensive dog healthy and happy. I've never had to make a tough choice about her care knowing that Healthy Paws will cover it. I... Read More

A truly great pet insurance company. All of my claims were processed within days. Recently my cat had a life threatening infection and the only option was an extensive and invasive surgery that cost a lot of money. I had full confidence Healthy Paws would help me with this claim and approved the surgery. After my cat was released, I filed the claim and within a week it was approved and the check mailed out. My cat is doing great now thanks to the veterinary hospital and Healthy Paws.

We have been members of the Healthy Paws Insurance family for over 7 years. The customer service and support provided have been exceptional. Both of our kitties have had serious health problems which necessitated frequent veterinary and hospital visits. I have no doubt that Healthy Paws has helped provide a quality of life for them that would otherwise have been impossible. Healthy Paws has allowed us to focus on what is best for our pets.

I never write reviews for anything, but every pet parent should invest in Healthy Paws. Shortly after I adopted my first cat, I found out she had kidney disease as well as an underlying GI issue. She has been in and out of a specialty vet hospital for the past few years, and she recently had to get emergency surgery to insert devices to bypass her kidneys. Healthy Paws has covered every single bill without question, and they have unmatched customer service. Every claim I’ve submitted is completed quickly and the process is so simple. Healthy Paws has literally saved my cat’s life, because I would never have been able to afford her medical care on my own.
