Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I've had Healthy Paws for a year now and I'm so glad I found such an amazing and reliable pet insurance company! I've called a number of times with questions and they've always been great on the phone and genuinely seem to care about my pup. They even sent me an email to check on her after her surgery. How sweet and above-and-beyond service is that?!? My pup (a little under 2 years old) tore her CCL in BOTH of her back legs and couldn't be more thankful for Healthy Paws. Both surgeries would've cost us over $8,000, but since we have pet insurance, it only cost us $1,750 out-of-pocket. That's an insane difference and allowed us to get the surgeries done without even blinking. And that... Read More

We took a Healthypaws insurance for our dow when we bought him 7 years ago. What ever happens in our dog's health, with Healthypaws we can be peace in mind. Filing a claim is really easy and claim processing time is quick. If additional questions or documents are needed Healthypaws contacts Veterinaries directly and saves the effort from us. Last month our dog got major problems and needed an MRI and lumbar puncture. Final bill was 3060$. Healthypaws processed the claim in 7days paid 80% of the cost. Our dog got the best care available and is happy and normal again.

My cat had to have surgery and initially did not do well afterward, necessitating a follow-up visit, which under the present stay-at-home order was especially stressful. Most veterinarian paperwork was done electronically, and I was pleased to see that I could upload the vet statements as PDFs directly to Health Paws. I received my reimbursement in about 24 hours as a direct deposit, which was great peace of mind, especially since I myself had not been well. Even under trying circumstances, Health Paws came through for me and my kitty, and I am very grateful.

I purchased health insurance for my dog when he was five years old. I spent several months researching all the companies out there because honestly, I was skeptical that companies wouldn't be reliable, trustworthy, wouldn't actually pay out when the time came. But, I've been down the end-of-life road with several dogs and it rips your heart out while wiping out your finances. I needed to be prepared and chose Healthy Paws. A year ago my dog had a large tumor that required a splenectomy and numerous expensive tests. Thankfully we caught and removed the cancer before it could spread. The bills totaled around $10,000 between checkups, surgery, ultrasounds, x-rays, and meds. Healthy Paws paid... Read More

Our 4 yr old Golden Retriever, Laika, had a walnut-sized lump removed from her chest on Jan. 30th, that I was worried about . . . it had been aspirated earlier, and tests showed that it was okay. But, I just didn't feel good about leaving it there. I pushed for surgery to remove it - it showed that the lump was malignant Subcutaneous Hemangiosarcoma. I thank God that it was removed before it spread to her organs - once it reaches their organs, there is no hope! Healthy Paws was right there with us - paid for all of the surgery, meds, etc. One month later, we went to the oncologist to have xrays and an abdominal ultrasound - once again, Healthy Paws covered these tests, which were... It is apparently a truism that the pets of vet students (and those of their parents) come down with virtually every illness known, giving students the opportunity to have first-hand experience with every possible condition. When my daughter was in vet school, she and her classmates researched pet insurance companies to determine which were the best. A large majority selected Healthy Paws. After several urgings from my daughter, I signed our two dogs up for Healthy Paws insurance and will be forever grateful that I did. After about a year on insurance, one of our dogs began having serious medical problems in rapid succession—near-fatal pancreatitis, IBS, very difficult to control diabetes,... Read More

Anna - We are so sorry to hear that your furbaby has been dealing with some rather serious health issues. Having a sick furbaby can be very stressful and scary, and also very expensive which is why having pet insurance is so important for all of the unexpected pet emergencies. We are so happy to hear that Healthy Paws was there for your family when you needed it the most. Thank you so much for all the kind words and for taking the time to share your story. Please give your pups more hugs from us!

I would recommend Healthy Paws to anyone after my latest experience. I had to take my cat for diagnostic testing, which included a CT scan, bloodwork, and a biopsy, and if I didn’t have pet insurance I simply wouldn’t have been able to afford his treatment. Healthy Paws also worked with my vet to make a direct payment so I was only responsible for my portion of the bill up front. Even if you aren’t concerned with your pet’s health now, this is a great way to prepare for the unexpected.
