Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

PetFirst offers an enrollment process that is easier than most. They do not require a vet exam, and accident coverage starts in 24 hours.

Additionally, the company has no upper age limit on enrollment, and no waiting periods for a few conditions many other providers outright just don't cover.

PetFirst also has a healthy pet discount for every year you don't make a claim. The upper tier plans, however, are on the pricier side, and the company does not offer unlimited coverage.

PetFirst Coverage

Coverage - 5 / 5

Petfirst offers accident and illness coverage that is pretty much industry standard for the price.

However, what sets them apart is they have no waiting periods for hip dysplasia, patella luxations or orthapedic conditions. The company also offers a wellness plan as an add on.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Petfirst does not restrict you to per incident or per illness limits. However, the company does have annual limits. They let you choose $5,000, $10,000, and $20,000.

While the $5,000 limit plan has a monthly deductible in the average pet insurance range, the two higher limit plans get pricey.

In fact, there are unlimited plans we review that tend to cost less than Petfirst's $20,000 limit plan.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Petfirst gives you the option of setting your reimbursement at 70%, 80%, and 90%. This is a consistent feature of the best pet insurance providers.

Deductibles - 4.6 / 5

Petfirst offers flexible deductibles of $50, $100, $250, and $500. Not many other plans offer the option of such a low deductible.

Choosing it would translate into higher premiums, but it could be a valuable option if it fits your particular situation, i.e. you know you can afford to fit the monthly premium into your budget but are not sure you'd have the extra cash on hand to pay a higher deductible.

Pricing: How much does PetFirst cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Petfirst's lower annual limit plans offer pretty much average monthly deductibles when compared to similar plans.

However, their higher limit plans are on the pricier side.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Petfirst has a particularly painless and lenient enrollment process when compared to other companies. Firstly they do not require a vet exam.

Accident coverage begins midnight the day of enrollment and illness 14 days after. There is no fee to cancel.

And lastly, Petfirst is one of only a handful of companies that has no upper age limit. Cats and dogs of any age can be covered for life.

Claims & Service

Extras - 4.5 / 5

Petfirst stands out two ways in the claims department, they offer healthy pet discounts every year you don't make a claim, and they do not increase your premium due to amount of claims made.

The claims procedure is the standard process of paying your vet bill up front, then submitting the claims form with all the relevant invoices and receipts.

I adopted an older dog. Bought coverage as advertised, and was told there was NO exclusion/waiting period. Claim submitted and denied due to "pre-existing" condition as mentioned in doctor's notes. Well no kidding there was a "pre-existing" condition... it was an ADOPTED/RESCUED older dog. Their advertising and what I was told amount to insurance fraud. I want the (expensive) premiums back. My other 17 dogs are insured with nationwide and I've never had this issue with adopted dogs with them. I only went with PetFirst as that's what the agency was using for adopted animals. Guess I'll put him with the other dogs' insurer...

100% would recommend! PetFirst has come through for my dog in two big, unexpected medical events. In both cases, I called in after submitting a claim, and the agents I spoke with were exceedingly helpful and reassuring. They helped me understand exactly what information was needed for the claim to be processed and how to deal with the idiosyncrasies of various vets (my emergency vet, for instance, didn't make notes about the diagnosis - he left me a voice mail instead). All this while being friendly, knowledgeable and compassionate. I felt like they were on my side every step of the way. At this point, they've spent more money on me than I have on them, but they've got a customer for life.

I didn't even have to put a claim in as I decided to go with another company. I canceled in a timely fashion but was never given the guaranteed refund. I wrote to them and they said it wasn't processed. Then when I got my refund, it was only for about half. Ummm...why?! I've now been going back and forth with them, over 5 emails, to get my full refund. They keep saying they'll look into it or process it, but nothing ever gets done. I'm so glad I went with a different company. If they can't even process a simple refund correctly, how poorly are their claims processed, if at all? They're not even cheap or competitively priced, so there's no reason whatsoever to "risk" going with this... Read More

Five days after adopting our kitten, he was climbing around in the bathroom, fell, and fractured his leg. Thankfully we'd started the free trial on him (and we also had a paid policy through them in place on our other cat). We started the insurance the day we adopted him, so the injury should have been covered. PetFirst denied the claim the first time. They said it was because the injury occurred before he was covered. They said that the date on our invoice and vet paperwork was his follow up visit, not the first time he was seen, and that the injury must have occurred weeks before. This was just blatantly untrue, and there was nothing in the vet notes to suggest this. The vet notes... Read More

Sign up and canceled the policy the day after 3 days later still no refund. Chat is terrible. Didn't get a good first impression of this company. I'm happy I saw all these reviews and was able to cancel on time. All these companies seem a scam.

Was pleased with my petfirst insurance experience this year. The firsttime was for regular veterinary care and the second unfortunately was for something more serious requiring hospitalization. Response and service were prompt and service rep was courteous and very helpful and patient.

I can’t say enough about this pet insurance company. My Pom has liver disease that is sustainable through medication. I have never been denied a claim. One of the agents actually took the time to explain to me that with his illness my old policy would run out of reimbursement funds before the year was out. I upgraded our plan and it was so cohesive there was no lag time. I recommend this plan to every one I know. And my vet endorses it as well.
